"Defense Lawyer: Fort Hood Shooter Could Be Paralyzed" (11.13 AP story). HE reaction: That's a start. This is straight out of the Glenn Beck playbook and I'm sorry, but Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan must swing for this. If he doesn't, the crowd in the Place de Concorde will make their feelings known.

Jeffrey, you're so cruel. Don't you realize that somebody once made a snide comment to him about being an Islamic fundamentalist? Who wouldn't be driven to killing a whole big bunch of your fellow soldiers under those circumstances. Hasan's the REAL victim here.

On a side note..... it would be nice if we tried harder to ignore the TV/Radio demagogues and/or the followers of said demagogues and just said how we feel without worrying about being counted among the "wrong side". ("I don't wanna sound like a bleeding heart liberal...", "I don't wanna sound like a Rush Limbaugh listener")

That's the way you feel and that's all that matters. Don't worry if somebody might want to lump you in with a person or group you don't like. Don't let anyone classify you.

There you go again, Wells, with your crazy conservative ranting!

Nothing to apologize for. While I'm against the death penalty for the most part... if you have absolute, iron-clad, indisputable proof that someone's committed a heinous crime like this, I have no problem with it. It's when you get to, say, Texas where you need to think twice about condemning someone to death (as in the travesty of justice that is the Willingham case). Seriously, what the hell is up with them?

No apology necessary. I'm glad he DIDN'T die. Hopefully, he will spend the rest of his life in the terrible agony that many paralyzed people have to deal with.

This dude should've offed himself instead of killing other innocent people.

I'm glad he's paralyzed.

I think so few shooters survive these incidents that it's of significant anecdotal value to be able to talk to him and learn about him.

That said, like Mr. F, I'm only against the death penalty insofar as it has turned out to be too easy to misapply. But if this is a capital crime, so be it.

What Sean said. It is shortsighted to want to put to death a rare surviving gunman from one of these massacres. Too rich a subject for psychological study.

For many reasons, I'm against the death penalty. The main reason being that is cost more to execute someone than it does to house them for the rest of their life. And life without parole in a maximum security prison seems like a much worse fate, that death would be easier and miore merciful than that,

HOWEVER, this was an offense committed within the military, and is rightfully to be decided by a military court which is righfully a whole different world of court and law than ours. The military HAS to have a different code to operate correctly, and I agree with that. He will be tried and judged under military law, and he damn well will swing.

joe: I dunno. Should an organization dedicated to looking for faster ways to napalm civilians really be allowed to decide these things? Hasn't it already fucked up enough as judge, jury, and executioner in the last two wars? Sure, that dude went Columbine on his base, but they encouraged that kind of behavior, by refusing to acknowledge his request to leave. Not to mention that they didn't do shit about background checks. And now they have the arrogance to put him on trial?

2 problems with your post DZ:

A) If you're a Muslim and you sign up for the military take their money and education, but don't expect to go to war overseas in the Middle East you're a twit.

B) This is always how it's been. Military crimes are tried by military tribunals.

At this very moment on Fox, Beck appears to be entertaining an entire audience of African-American conservatives, who are totally into Beck.

It's kind of like when Justin Timberlake gets to show up at the Vibe Awards, win instead of the black artists, and hit on Alicia Keys, and everyone just kinda shrugs.

Anyone catch Southpark ripping on Beck last week? Was a pretty good episode. They did a great job of showing what an ass he is. And on top of that, their Dances with Smurfs comparison to Avatar was great as well. I didn't see that coming, although I certainly should have.

Colin: A) But there's nothing wrong with being a cocaine-snorting dick-head with family connections who gets out of the Army through a cushy National Guard gig where he can bail out at any time, right?

B) Unless they're military crimes against civilians in another country. Then you get a pardon and/or a light sentence.

Mr. F: I didn't say they had it coming, but when you're in the business of running our national defense irresponsibly and immorally, in exchange for kickbacks from greedy contractors, you're not exactly the right person to be judging the blowback you created.
