Lionsgate has provided Hit Fix/Awards Campaign columnist Greg Ellwood with an exclusive clip from Jim Sheridan's Brothers (which I'm seeing this evening) in which costars Carey Mulligan -- the Best Actress front-runner for her work in An Education -- and Natalie Portman share a low-key scene. I say again -- half of the British-born Mulligan's natural charm goes out the window when she's obliged to speak with an American accent. (I've posted the embed code twice and it doesn't work -- screw it.)

It's a fairly poor attempt at an American accent.

Gee, I didn't think it was that bad. The only time it was shaky for me was when she said the word "apologize."

I liked the american accent, it worked fine to me, BUT ..... she looks so much better as a blond, UGH please. I hope she goes back to blond after this film. She can be so pretty.

Mulligan's American accent is a great deal better than Portman's English accent.
On a side note, Mulligan reminds me a bit of Michelle Williams here.

Her yank accent is pretty bad. American ears don't seem to be as sensitive to bad attempts at American accents. Probably because the US is such a large and diverse country. When they hear a weird accent, they don't immediately guess its a foreigner's bad attempt, but rather that this person must be from some part of the country that
they've never been to.
Brits on the other hand are very familiar with all types of British accents, so they know when somebody's faking it.
