One awfully nice thing about pets is that you don't have to look your best for them. They'll take you with your hair combed or scattered, pants on or pants off, showered or not, with or without a manicure. They'll put out the same you-and-me-forever vibe as long as you're mellow and affectionate and put food on the plate. And they won't walk into the room and say, "I'm really sorry but I just met this cat lover in the other building who makes me feel more secure."

Cats are alright sometimes.... but it's all about dogs. A big black lab or golden retriever who you can use as a pillow or a track mate. Although I have a black cat also with six toes on each foot who is quite a character... but ultimately dogs are definitely the best.

Cats are wonderful people, but my dog Micky would leave me in a second for anyone in boots. She loves men in boots. Would have been in heaven in 1939 Berlin.

What a great-looking cat.
But uh oh. The comments are touching on one of my "pet" peeves. The old cat vs. dog thing.
For the last time.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE TWO!
"Like cats?"
"No, I like dogs"
argggg!
Yes, they are both animals. They are both pets. But they are completely different beasts.
This nation has not yet passed any laws forcing us to decide between the two.
Goes back to another thing. I'm convinced most people who don't like cats don't like them because they aren't dogs.
"They don't fetch... they don't go ape-shit when you get home.. they don't guard against burglars..." That's because they are cats.

Here, here, Travis. Growing up, our family always had both. But with my life today, a dog requires too much maintenance and personal attention. I have two cats, but would also have a dog if I could.
Jeffrey's posts about his cat are some of my favorites.

I respect cat people, but I'm a dog person.
Dog lovers should read Dean Koontz's book about his dog 'Trixie' : 'A Big Little Life'.
I cant wait to get my first dog. Have to wait a bit because my twins are only 8 months old. Need them to be a bit bigger to handle the flopping tail.

Animal lovers might be interested in reading Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper, her account of how adopting a blind cat changed her life. Some of it is predictable and too sweet and there's too much about the travails facing single women, but I defy anyone not to tear up in the section in which Cooper overcomes a ton of obstacles to get back to her lower Manhattan apartment and her three cats during the days after 9/11.

You know Cats can be whores sometimes?
The whole wanting to get outside and meowing loudly. The persuasive walking with their butts wagging like drag queens theres a reason why cats moan like whores.
They're lovable.

Every time Jeff posts a picture of his cat it makes me wish I could afford to own one. I'm just lucky I'm at home so my co-workers don't have to see me melt right in front of the computer.

Yeah, no kidding. I was certain he'd had them euthanized and was keeping mum. Typical Wells to make us worry.

I agree there needn't be a comparison or choice, but we always seem to lose dogs much quicker. My girlfriend's lab just died, and even though I only got to know him for the last 5 months or so, it was a huge loss. Meanwhile my 20 year old cat who's been in my family since I was about 7 shows no signs of giving up. She'll very likely outlive me, and when she goes it will be quietly.
