Ah... Viggo before Aragorn. I remember seeing the trailer for A Walk on the Moon and thinking, "Why do people keep casting this guy? Sure, he *looks* like a movie star, but is he interesting?" Maybe I missed something in his earlier performances, but I just didn't get it.
When he was cast as Aragorn, I wasn't very pleased. But he won me over there. And then came A History of Violence. When I finished reading The Road and then read that he'd been cast as the lead, I exclaimed "Perfect!" And while that's not a perfect movie, I'm not sure how anybody could have been more persuasive in the part. Now, if his name is attached to a film, I'm immediately interested.
Oh, and yeah: the more I look at those two posters, the more the similarities become puzzling. Sheesh... the hairstyles, the dresses! Did they think that nobody would notice?
I think the difference in their expressions and where their eyes are directed is important, though, in communicating the tone of the film and the nature of their characters. (That said, having seen the film, Carey's posture fits, while Peter's seems to mislead a bit.)

I remember first seeing the previews for A Perfect Murder and wondering 'why is this no-name Viggo guy getting billing in the trailer?'. Since he looked much younger than he was at the time (39), I figured he was some WB-hunk who had no business being in a real movie. Irony that A) I was wrong in every way and B) he got his star-making role in Lord of the Rings precisely because of his (comparatively) advanced age.
Viggo and Diane look a lot more interested in each other while Carey and Peter just look cold. Maybe they were attempting to make a comment about the relationship in 'An Education'?
It's not like this is some ridiculously unique way to frame two people's faces in a shot. I'd be surprised if there aren't lots of poses like this in "art" or advertising photography.
Viggo is fantastic on screen in pretty much everything I've seen LOTR and after. Hope The Road is better than the early word.

He really is very very good in THE PROPHECy. He's the only one besides Walken who understands the tone that movie needs. Fucking Eric Stoltz.
