Signing Off

Sunday, 11.28, 8:25 am.

Without the slightest doubt the single most
soothing image I have in my entire photo library. Positano has been overtaken and polluted by schmuck tourists, but I'd go back there again in a second. Taken in late May 2007.

Not the Cinque Terre, it's on the Amalfi Coast, south of Rome. (It's where they filmed The Talented Mr Ripley, among others).

Cinque Terre is just as scenic (or maybe even more scenic) than the Amalfi Coast but not as touristy or crowded. The hiking trail along the coast from one town to the next four towns is breathtaking. I'd go to Cinque Terre in a heartbeat.

Aight, I changed my desired Alternate Reality Best Picture Oscar team a bit. Herzog's Bad Lieutenant would still be a nominee, but Collapse would be the winner. That thing is like Capitalism: A Love Story with more impact and urgency. There's no movie more zeitgeist-ey than it right now.
Anyway, Ebert reflects on his year of tumult.

I sincerely doubt Jeff would sign off with "Biggest Bullock Ever" being his last legitimate post. Maybe just some down time for the the rest of the weekend.
DeeZee - Saw "Collapse" yesterday afternoon in NYC. Powerful, urgent, with a tinge of madness thrown in. Everyone should see this film and I can not believe the lack of exposure this thing is getting. If you have it OnDemand in your area watch it. It does have a zeitgeist feel, but with much more urgency as you point out, "the power of now" and less of that Utopia ending of Zeitgeist.

The post is titled "Signing Off," and it's been more than 24 hours since Wells' last post.
Anyone else besides TM and me think this is odd?
Of course, it's a holiday weekend, and he did take the time to thankfully ban amybrown.
Maybe he received an advance copy of the Che Blu-Ray.

TM, the first photo is actually dated "Sunday, 11.28," which isn't a valid date for the 2009 calendar but will be in 2010. Perhaps Jeff sent us a photo from a year in the future!

But having been there, done that, I strongly suggest making that hike from the west to the east. Uphill all the way otherwise, as I learned mid-trip.
and yup, I need my HE fix today....signing off sounds so ominous.

I'm guessing that yesterday's matinee of A Streetcar Named Desire was so powerful, it gave Jeffrey pause. And a well-deserved one at that. The whole world needs to step back from the brink and take a deep breath right now, don'cha think? 2009 has been a tough year for everyone, but especially for Blanche DuBois types.

Seriously, I think he has more in common with Blanche than Stanley (which is a good thing if you actually understand where Tennessee Williams was coming from). I've always suspected Jeffrey was a sensitive artistic type beneath the cynical mask, believe it or not. (Google "Jeffrey Wells" and "turtle.") And I think his disdain for the eloi is comparable to Blanche's revulsion toward "brutes." There are other similarities, but it's somewhat rude to psychoanalyze your host when he leaves the room, even if the intention is sympathetic.

damn it, I want a post from Jeff breaking down how the Fantastic Mr. Fox is another fizzle for Wes Anderson in what should have been a moderate size hit. The film goes over the 2,000 theater mark with a major push on TV, a rather high BO on the limited release and barely does $9.5 over the five days. Does this mean the Wes Anderson "brand" is actually worthless? Does his name really put butts in the seat? or merely gets a few thousand fanboys drooling with the prospect of a Criterion release of his latest film? Do audiences no longer connect to how Wes frames a shot?
Was this film marketed too cool for school kids? And too Paddington Bear kiddie like for adults? Who was the projected person that would buy a ticket to the film? And do they all wear cord suits and hushpuppies?
It didn't even make a third of what Where the Wild Things pulled in. Why did that kid movie get better attendance?
Who is get nailed with Scott Rudin's bagel at this morning?
