What Tennessee Williams plays and film adaptations didn't feature a handsome (or pretty) young Southern-studcat figure in a prominent role? I'm thinking, I'm thinking. Night of the Iguana, of course. The 1961 film of Summer and Smoke only had Laurence Harvey so that too was an exception. Boom, Last of the Mobile Hot Shots...what others?
In Jodie Markell's Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (Paladin, 12.30), the object of desire is played by 28 year-old Chris Evans.

I really like Howard and Evans, but the narration almost makes this play like a satirical trailer.

What an AWFUL trailer.
Between the surfeit of titles, the plodding narration and the rancid generic score, it plays like one of those Miramax "Now Available on VHS" home video trailers from the '80s - for one of their foreign-language acquisitions that they had no idea what to do with.

Between the 1940s style graphics, the breathless music, the Harlequin Romance narration, the horrendous kiss-my-grits accents and Howard and Evans looking like they're kids playing dress-up, the whole thing plays like a parody of a Tennessee Williams movie. All it needs is Ned Flanders as Stanley Kowalski and Marge Simpson as Blanche DuBois.

Williams is one of my most favourite playwrights. Of course he featured Southern women in his plays-- that's where he spent most of his adults years in!
I've heard that Bryce Dallas Howard has a very weak performance, while the rest of the cast have decent performances in this film.

Not since "Rochelle, Rochelle" or "The Flower That Drank the Moon" has the screen ignited with such force and beauty.

Is Ann-Margret playing a character named "Aunt Chlamydia," or did I hear that wrong?

The narration is ridiculous and the dialogue is pretty awful as well. I saw parts of this at TIFF a few years ago. Tennessee was definitely not on his top form. I'll just read Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Again.

Oh man...that's just sooooo bad. Not even a so bad it's good. Just awful. Looks like something I might flip onto when it runs on one of the movie channels, just to see the costumes.
