It's 5:15 pm and dark out as I sit at my usual Lincoln Center-area Starbucks. I'm about to head downtown for Indiewire's Xmas party on Spring Street and therefore don't feel like calling around about anything, but a friend tells me there's a small story to be had about whether or not Up In The Air's real-life unemployed will make an appearance at the Oscars in early March.

One of the angles is "did Up In The Air's real-life 'terminated employees' get Taft-Hartleyed into SAG so they can get a little residual kick-back from the movie?" Will they at least be invited to the Oscar telecast? And if Up In The Air wins Best Picture, "will father and son producing team of Ivan and Jason Reitman give a shout-out to those 'terminated employees' in the audience - or better yet, even call them up on stage to receive recognition?"

I'll make some calls about this tomorrow morning. Fair enough?

The "real lifer" moments in the movie felt very When Harry Met Sallyish and took me out of the movie each and every time. If this film wins Best Picture, it will be considered one of those "What were they thinking?" awards a few years from now.

I agree completely, moviesquad. I saw it last night and thought it was mediocre to an almost impressive degree. It's not the worst film I've ever seen - certainly no Juno - and it's definitely the kind of crummy faux-found mainstream movie that Best Picture Oscars are minted for. But after a few relatively decent Oscar years, it would be nice if this isn't the last film left up on stage.

Marvel bore me though. This "Ultimate Avengers" film they're gearing up to do is going to be an epic clusterfuck. Why bother establishing a universe for the likes of Iron Man if you're just going to stick a Norse God in there with him? It the same reason that Batman and Superman wouldn't work on film together.
