Firedog Lake's Jane Hamsher to drug-company lobbyist Lanny Davis on today's (12.17) Ed Show: "Which drug companies and health corporations are you speaking for when you tout this [de-balled health care] bill? Who's paying you to be here?" I couldn't put this up until I got home late tonight, but it's quite beautiful.
And good on Howard Dean for calling a spade a spade -- i.e., the de-balled health care bill will "put this country on a trajectory which is a disaster. This is an insurance company's dream, this bill. This is the Washington scramble, and I think it's ill-advised...a bigger bailout for the insurance industry than [AIG]...a very small number of people are going to get any insurance at all, until 2014, if the bill works."
And finally a respectful salute to Sen Al Franken for objecting today to Sen. Joe Lieberman's request to speak an extra gaseous minute.
And...

Ed Schultz is one of the worst cable news talk show hosts out there. Righties always like to guffaw about how Olbermann is the Hannity/Beck of the left but they're full of shit because Keith doesn't make shit up like the two aforementioned twats. Ed doesn't tell flatout lies like Hannity and Beck are known to do, but he is every bit the rigid ideologue that Hannity and Beck are.

It's been fascinating over the last 24 hours to watch the vomitous bile erupting from some of these centrist pundits and politicans. Joe Klein, Chris Matthews, Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod (clearly Rahm's mouthpieces) have been spewing non-stop at progressives, accusing them of everything from subterfuge, vanity and treason to immaturity, heartlessness and self-centeredness. Yet they don't hold Lieberweasel, Nelson, Baucus, Snowe or Landrieu accountable for any of their outrageous behavior -- these are the people who've destroyed healthcare reform, after all, not progressives. Tweety's especially out of control, hurling below-the-belt insults at Anthony Weiner and Howard Dean, and revealing a laughable blind spot when he accuses progressives (a word he literally gags on) of being the villains.
These ConservaDems (if they're Democrats at all) are the ones destroying the party. They don't seem to get AT ALL that this bill will be the gift that keeps giving not just to the corporate health vultures, but to Republicans. Because the public will eventually get over the Wall St. bailout when the economy returns ... but if they're forced to cough up more and more money every year for healthcare that's no better than what they've got now, OR PAY A FINE, they'll be cursing Democrats until their dying breaths.

I love the site and have been a reader for years, but this whole "let's kill the health care bill" theme is absolutely nuts. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it's a MASSIVELY progressive accomplishment. We're about to spend $900 billion on getting the poor health insurance. It's the biggest social program we've even sniffed at in 40 years.
Also, the idea that this is an insurance industry bailout has been debunked rather effectively by Ezra Klein, but here's his exact wordage so I don't screw this up:
"To put this a bit more sharply, if I could construct a system in which insurers spent 90 percent of every premium dollar on medical care, never discriminated against another sick applicant, began exerting real pressure for providers to bring down costs, vastly simplified their billing systems, made it easier to compare plans and access consumer ratings, and generally worked more like companies in a competitive market rather than companies in a non-functional market, I would take that deal. And if you told me that the price of that deal was that insurers would move from being the 86th most profitable industry to being the 53rd most profitable industry, I would still take that deal."
By all means, if you want to emphasize ideological purity, go right ahead. That's your right and prerogative. But there's a reason committed progressives like Sherrod Brown and Jay Rockefeller are behind this thing. The big picture here is so much more important. This is the first piece of legislation that lays down a marker for health care being a right for every American. That's a pretty remarkable deal.
Also, to those upset at Nelson and Landrieu, I hear you. But look at it this way: senators from Nebraska and Louisiana, two of the most conservative states in the union that went against the President in a big way in 2008, are inches away from approving $900 billion for poor and lower-middle class Americans. Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas will probably lose her seat for this. Start over, and all of that is rendered moot.

+1 with Sridhar.
Jeff, since you run your own website, I presume you're self employed and can't rely on an employer to provide your health insurance. This "de-balled" bill still will make it exponentially easier for someone like you to get meaningful coverage at a fair price. And it gives someone like me who gets coverage through his employer exponentially more security should I end up on the street like several of my former colleagues.
It's really sad to see how quickly progressives have moved from trying to help people--even in incomplete measures--to trying to solidify political power.

enough with getting the poor health care. The issue is how the middle class go poor having to pay for ever increasing insurance policies that keep taking away benefits. our monthly premium has more than doubled in the last decade. It's taking a bite out of our wallet.
last month, Blue Cross wanted to jack up the group policy rate 17% while increasing the doctor visit fees - especially the urgent care rate.
the middle class needed relief and these idiot senators that will never ever ever have to worry about their healthcare are too busy stuffing their campaign coffers to worry about getting things right.

My favorite part is Carl Levin calling McCain out for his bullshit "outrage" by pointing out that the exact same thing had happened that very day, so it wasn't an unprecedented breech of protocol.
I love how Republicans have gotten so used to this tactic of saying the outright lie and then it being days before someone calls them on it.
Man, I didn't think McCain could do more to shit on his own reputation, but Wait! - There's more!

Jane Hamsher rocks! That little prick Lanny Davis is a whore like no other, going on TV as a "Democratic strategist" while pocketing money from drug companies, corrupt Latin America dictators and Whole Foods. (To read more about this scumbag, see http://tinyurl.com/nemg5j) She called him on his conflicts, and the look on his face as she walloped him square in the scrotum was priceless.
And that platinum pixie 'do combined with her twinkly eyes and Cheshire grin turns me on, I will not lie. I've heard some pretty negative stories about her previous career as a producer, but she has certainly redeemed herself with firedoglake as a truthteller and a proud proclaimer of American liberties in the grand tradition of Thomas Paine, H.L. Mencken and Abbie Hoffman.
Agree with Fanny Alexander that any time a pundit goes on Fox, CNN or MSNBC or the networks, they should make their paymasters known, especially considering the conflict of interest. That scary British guy with the skunk hair, Richard Wolfe, got kicked off of MSNBC for a while because he was working for Public Strategies, a Washington DC PR/Lobbying firm at the same time as he was hyping certain legislation and political matters on the air.

I hope some readers had a chance to see Dr. Howard Dean giving refreshingly substantive answers on Sunday`s (Dec. 20) Meet The Press. The Huffington Post has a good summary of it by Jason Linkins. The HP also explaions how the health care lobby swarmed Congress and got what it wanted. HP founder Arianna says lobbyists should have been Time`s Person of The Year.

My feeling on the matter is - and I know this is an anathema to "liberals" of a certain age - Howard Zinn was ultimately WRONG about "the Great Man" theory of history being a myth; i.e. that "ordinary folk" and "mass movements" were the real driving force of humanity and "great men of history" just took credit for it later. cheap voip service providers
