Here's Why

I was slapped around two or three days ago for putting on my realist hat and predicting that The Blind Side would be a Best Picture nominee. This weekend's box-office tallies have made it clear that this Christian catnip football saga is going to easily top $200 million, and this clearly makes The Blind Side an ideal recipient of a gimme nom -- a "people" movie that the expanded Best Picture nomination slate was clearly created for.

Too bad it's trite, cliche, perpetuates every bad stereotype, the main character is barely fleshed out, and is about as subtle as a nail gun to the testicles. The Eloi are winning, and their manic zeal is making me fucking gag.

People were slapping you around for that? I mean, I don't love the idea of it getting nominated for Best Picture, but I think it's pretty clear that you're correct that it will.

The Eloi won when LOTR was named the best picture of the year, war is long lost. The rebirth of mainstream cinema that started in the 70's was beaten to death with a large rock to the temple.

Yet, some of the same people bitchin' and moanin' about THE BLIND SIDE's success are the same people who thought TRANSFORMERS 2 and G.I JOE were cool to watch. We all have our own ideas of acceptable porn and for many in the fly over states this was just the ticket.

I have no problem with this. It's like when Good Will Hunting getting a nom. As long as it doesn't win, it's worth throwing a bone to populism.

"The Eloi won when LOTR was named the best picture of the year, war is long lost."

The "Eloi" only saw LOTR to say they'd seen it, and because there was enough action to make them think they were seeing something dumber than they were (these are the same people who "love" Scarface but can't tell you anything about it outside the last ten minutes.) Ditto Iron Man, Dark Knight, etc. Don't conflate the Geek Age of Cinema with the mongrel horde just because they've been easily tricked into helping prop-up "our" box-office ;)

In any case, watching "The Blind Side" become this kind of a success is truly disheartening - not because of the "type" of film it is ('da reg'la folks' deserve movies too) but because of what a BAD example of the type it is. Put it side by side with, say, "Remember the Titans" and it's just a poorly-made film, period.

Meanwhile, I just came from seeing "Everybody's Fine," which Miramax has managed to mis-advertise into a 10th-place BOMB opening, and I straight-up loved it. It's EXACTLY the kind of heartwarming, nuclear-family-praising, mom-n-apple-pie middle-American friendliness that Blind Side is biting but done WELL.

By "people" you mean "whites with limited life experience"? Supporting this movie says a whole fucking lot about somebody's social politics, and it's not pretty.

Aris: So it's like the chick flick answer to The Passion? Or was that Juno?

Deathtongue: "The Eloi won when LOTR was named the best picture of the year,"

You mean Titanic.

Anyway, I just came back from Parnassus, and I totally get why no one wanted to buy it. Imagine an updated version of The Fisher King, where the crazy bum is the main character, he's got a troupe, and he takes you on a journey through a CG-fied PG-13 update of a Jodorowski film. Plus, there's a joke with Verne Troyer which some might deem offensive. And the thing takes a while to get to the heady stuff, to boot. In addition, by the time you are there, you don't know WTF happened. I actually dug it, but damn is it a hard sell. I'm guessing Sony Classics is hoping it can get some of that Wild Things audience for it, because that's the only way it'll make money in theaters. As for everyone else who wants an incentive to see it, Lily Cole is hot, and probably destined for bigger things than Kristen Stewart.

Moving on, Pitt in another Dracula movie.

I was surprised that I didn't like the Blind Side more... I went into this thing a huge sucker for "uplifting sports drama"... but this just wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. It was oddly structured; instead of a three-act conflict/resolution structure, it was a how series of mini-conflict/resolutions that presented and then solved themselves within five minutes each. Sort of prevents you from totally getting into the story...

Sandra Bullock was terrific though, but the main kid was seriously nothing special. The only real reason to watch the thing is to see Bullock finally deliver in a drama; makes up for that movie where she was a grizzled homicide detective who showed how tough she was by smacking her chewing gum at crime scenes.

I think people are misinterpreting what the "eloi" is, actually. In this case, the Morlocks would be winning, non? The lower rung of society, while the Eloi would be backing films like An Education, Up in the Air, etc. According to Wikipedia anyway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloi

Deaf ... vomited in your mouth because why, Bullock has a home run? I'm surprised by your reaction. At age 40, Bullock has steam rolled through 2 major hits in one year. Not great cinema, but they aren't majorly offensive either. Overall, it's good for women in Hollywood.

lazespud ... Bullock delivered more that gum snaps in Murder By Numbers, it's a faily solid piece of work.

I don't get the hate for someone who seems like one of the good ones.

this is right up my alley. I've been eagerly awaiting for this movie for about one year. I drooled over the trailer and have watched this at least 10 times. I don't play roller derby, but a few of my friends do. I love the strong female characters in the trailer- they remind me of my friends.

I love it. and I'm so gonna see it on opening day. I wish it would come out NOW, though.

and BoshBarnet, how the bloody hell is this a "chick flick"? Just because the film has a bunch of female leads, right? please.

Gordon: Ledger was never a big draw when he was alive, and I doubt that Parnassus will attract any of that TDK money, since he in no way resembles the Joker character he portrayed in TDK. Depp will probably be the main hook, since he's more commonly associated with these types of pictures. But Parnassus is not gonna be huge, unless, as I said earlier, Wild Things somehow opened up a new market for off-beat fantasy movies.
