Make My Day

A few hours ago In Contention's Kris Tapley sat down with Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper and producer-costar Robert Duvall, and during their chat Duvall said the following: "The Hurt Locker might be the best film I've seen in a decade."

He also said that APOCALYPTO was the best film he had seen in 25 years three years ago.

The Hurt Locker is currently my favorite film of the year. I've seen it about 6 times. It is #10 on my Best of the Decade list. Apocalypto is top 40. Crazy Heart is not in my top 25 of the year... although Bridges was really good.

I never trust actors' opinions of films for the simple fact they almost always are talking about a performance. And HURT LOCKER has those in Spades. A compelling story... that was another matter entirely.

Duvall's the man, but he's out to lunch on that one.

And the wave of excess praise continues.

I saw a screener of "The Hurt Locker" over a year ago post-Toronto, and thought it was a good -- not great -- movie that overcomes its episodic nature and lack of a compelling story with its very good direction, some extremely tense sequences, and a terrific performance.

When its release starting to come up, and the ejaculatory reviews came in, I gave it another look at a screening -- felt exactly the same.

When it opened, I saw it twice more (with a friend, and with my father), wanting oh-so-hard to see the greatness in it others saw. Now, having seen it 4 times, post-reviews, post-release, post awards hype: I still think it's a good -- not great -- movie that overcomes its episodic nature and lack of a compelling story with very good direction, some extremely tense sequences, and a terrific performance.

Best movie in a decade? My ass.

The Duvall quote about Apocalypto is true, I regret to say -- http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/apocalypto/

Maybe not the best film in the last 25...but Apocalypto really is extraordinary.

Do you know if is true Scott Cooper was having health issues, more specifically lung cancer, or it's just a rumor?
