Meanings

I have this notion that when subway movie posters are trashed before a certain advertised film opens, it means that a certain strata of New York City culture (i.e., youngish, male-ish) has already voted against it due to a resentment of one form or another.

You'd think, but that's not it. It's just that every movie poster gets defaced.

My favorite poster defacing (and, unfortunately, I didn't have my camera on me before it was taken down-- whoever did that is a humorless dirtbag) is:
Someone put a perspective-correct. crazy kitten face over the "ninja assassin" in the Ninja Assassin bus stop poster with a fish plastered on the end of his "ninja assassin" knife on the corner of Los Feliz & Hillhurst.

No, they definitely screw with the posters of the movies they hate, since I never saw anyone mess with the pics of the last Harry Potter.

Where did DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS come from anyway? Was that always scheduled to come out in December or did it get moved up from elsewhere in the last month or so? 'Cause I'd never heard of it, ever, till I saw 2012 and the trailer ran (and has before seemingly everything since.)
I have a feeling that's going to be HUUUGE and might even open stronger than Avatar.

My 'Morgans' question -- why does Hugh Grant look so depressed on the poster?
I mean, yeah, I know what the movie's basic plot is, so I understand the character nature of it, but it looks like Hugh Grant himself wants nothing to do with that poster, that movie, or Sarah Jessica Parker. It seems like a strange sell to me. I thought Hugh Grant's charm was supposed to be that he always puts on that goofy smile, no matter what.

Thank you, rick. I worry about today's movie-going youth. Jeffrey posts a fabulous shot of one of the great screen sirens in cinema history, and most of the commenters reflect on a defaced Hugh Grant poster. Kim Novak is, indeed, a piece of work.

Eh, Kim Novak?
Sorry, this'll sure get me branded as "Eloi," but honestly? When it comes to actresses? If you're not current, I don't really care. Because I see myself as someone who might be famous someday, and I only fantasize about women who are CURRENTLY hot.
Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Rita Hayworth? Don't care. Not denying they were the hotness in their day, or that they were in classic movies, but once you're old or dead? Yeah, kind of hard for me to get worked up over some chick who'd be 102 today.
Christ, I don't even wanna see Alicia Silverstone or Liv Tyler anymore, and they're both YOUNGER THAN ME. Even current luminaries like Alba and Knightley probably have about five more years before I'm completely indifferent to them, just as Novak or Hayworth might as well be the Crypt Keeper at this point. I like to KEEP CURRENT, so I've already moved on to K-Stew and anyone else who's 18-25.

Lex, I was going to tell you to check out Bell, Book and Candle, in which Novak gives one of the most seductive performances in movie history. But now that I finally know where you're coming from, I realize that would be pointless.
Understand, I'm not being critical; the heart wants what the heart wants. Your statement does explain a lot, though.

Hugh Grant usually knows what works for him and I expect it will do the same kind of moderate business that TWO WEEKS' NOTICE and MUSIC AND LYRICS did. No matter how AVATAR opens, it will ceratinly outpace MORGANS.
