I have to return a rental car in New Jersey and then bus back into Manhattan for a Serious Man luncheon at the Monkey Bar starting at 12:30 pm, so I haven't time to get into the just-announced SAG Award nominations.
It's the same old gruel anyway with Up In The Air, Precious and Inglourious Basterds taking three nominations each. Mark my words -- five years from now the people standing by Precious will be like Peter denying three times that he knew Yeshua of Nazareth. Who, me...Precious...what?

Kinda like every Stephen Daldry movie, but whenever he makes another, they forget all that and nominate him again?

I enjoyed Laurent a lot, but after I saw the film I wondered why Kruger wasn't getting any attention. To me, Laurent has one really great scene and it's when she's at the restaurant talking to Waltz. Kruger has the basement tavern scene as well as the two scenes with Waltz at the movie premiere, and they're all pretty damned impressive.
Besides, Laurent is essentially a lead and that field was too crowded.

This is slightly off-topic, but has anyone here seen Lee Daniels' first film, Shadowboxer? With Cuban Gooding, Jr. and Helen Mirren playing gun-toting lovers? Terrible movie, but a destined guilty pleasure for the decade. Incidentally, Mo'nique's character, a heroin addicted nurse, is called Precious. I could write a novel about all the contrivances in this movie, but what I will say is that it can't help but colour my viewing of Precious now.

A lot of people have done that with both Titanic and Crash (just to cite two examples of films that many people supported at the time they were released only to disown them later).

Yes, if Precious somehow won Best Pic, it would turn into Crash times 10. Also, that last shot of a confident, soon-to-be-dead Precious striding to Labelle's "It took a long time" with Mongol and non-Mongol would become the worst parting shot of any Best Picture ever, right? I mean, it was worse than the rat in Departed, right?
Renner over Stuhlbarg is a joke, imo, though i know that HE does not tolerate ill-speak towards Hurt Locker.

I just now realized Mo'Nique was also in Shadowboxer, as Joseph Gordon-Levitt's lover. One of the worst movies of its year, but an interesting terrible. When Stephen Dorff's your villain, you're in trouble.

Diane Kruger gave the best female acting performance in IG, and her role was less showy and the better for it, so I'm pleased to see her nomination.
If Precious loses in a few years, it will be no different to other "classier" adored by the cognoscenti at Oscar-Time, that bore people now, like Traffic, Babel and In The Bedroom.
I just hope Carey Mulligan doesn't bring Shia to the Oscars.

My feeling on the matter is - and I know this is an anathema to "liberals" of a certain age - Howard Zinn was ultimately WRONG about "the Great Man" theory of history being a myth; i.e. that "ordinary folk" and "mass movements" were the real driving force of humanity and "great men of history" just took credit for it later.best voip solution
