Crunch Time

In his 1.25 Movieline review of Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me, Seth Abramovitch describes the brutal scene in which Jessica Alba is beaten to a pulp by Casey Affleck's Lou.

"After making love [to Alba] and discussing their plans to reconvene a few weeks down the line, Lou pulls on a pair of black gloves, then begins to punch Alba in the face, at full force, repeatedly. The camera does not turn away, and as he takes a good dozen shots at her head, her features begin to distort at each impact with his closed fist. As she lies on the floor, unconscious, unrecognizable and barely breathing, he asks if she can hear him. He tells her he loves her, and that's he's sorry. He then [delivers] several more punches."

The backers of this film are anticipating that Joe Popcorn will want to pay to see this? The deal as I understand it is that if Eli Roth is directing it's totally deplorable torture porn, but if Michael Winterbottom is directing it's a Sundance entry and a film that upscale cineastes might want to see.

It's a Jim Thompson adaptation--and I'm guessing that the dirstibutor who picks iKILLER up will demand edits, as well as the MPAA.

If it's a faithful adaptation of the Thompson novel, then, no, the film ain't gonna appeal to your "Joe Popcorn" any more than Thompson's novels would. So? Nobody is forcing anyone to go see the film or to read the books.

The blood and bone fragment on the screen is not real. ;-)

Thompson's stories are dark and perverse and violent and if somebody's going to adapt them for the screen, what's the point of watering them down? If you want a watered down version of the stories, make up your own to shoot and leave Thompson's stories alone.

That's right! It's based on a BOOK! Stop having opinions or scepticism about this movie! Have you read the BOOK!? Modern movies are all byproducts of previously existing material and evaluating artistic choices in cinema is therefore pointless, get it?

I just re-watched ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES last night, so I have a particularly vivid image of Casey Affleck at his saddest and most cowardly, which makes this description odd and somehow also more creepy.

I believe the distinction, small as it is, is that "torture porn" is watching lead characters that you like getting tortured, whereas this movie is about somebody who isn't a hero (nor even an anti-hero) who's a violent serial killer.

Gordon27, have you seen Hostel or Hostel 2? By and large, the way those deaths happen, I think it's inaccurate to say the killers are antiheros. The leads in both films are fairly likable and set up as the heros of the film. Both even get some sort of vindication in the end with revenge. These movies are pretty damn uncomfortable.

Now, if you were talking about Jason, Freddy or Michael Myers, I'd agree.

I think you misread me -- the killer as antihero (or not even antihero, I think) is this movie, not the torture porn movies.

Though, for the record, I think what Eli Roth does really well is make his heroes recognizable without being all that likable; both 'Hostel' and 'Cabin Fever' make their protagonists believably dumb, insular teenagers/early-20's. I think he's really good at that. And it makes it a little bit more interesting when they get tortured -- you don't like them, exactly, but they don't deserve *that* [like the asshole in the wheelchair in 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre].

So it's "interesting" when unlikeable characters get tortured, because you feel conflicted, because you kind of want them to get badly carved up, but maybe not quite actually disemboweled? Yeah, that is interesting.

And Devin Faraci has explained on Chud how Seth Abramovitch remembered the scene in a way it wasn't shot - unlike how it's described, the camera does turn away, but Seth highlights an unforgiving trait of the cinematography that apparently didn't happen on the screen.

Should the story as originally told be sanitized, be cleansed and neutered so that its original impact is diminished to the point you unrepentant and cowardly, faux-outraged cream-puffs can bare to watch it? Should a woman being beaten happen behind the scrim with tasteful colored light, muted sound and an easy pass? Many things in life are safe for the weak, but if you think storytelling is one of them you are dead fucking wrong. Go back to your cartoon dramas and pot comedies if that's where you feel safe. There are adults here in this world that aren't afraid to hear and see tales, and that means the beautiful ones, the ugly ones, and everything else in between.

Of all the things about 'Lovely Bones' to be disappointed about, this one hadn't occurred to me.

"So it's "interesting" when unlikeable characters get tortured, because you feel conflicted, because you kind of want them to get badly carved up, but maybe not quite actually disemboweled?"

Well, the alternative, as far as the genre is concerned, is completely interchangeable co-eds who are meant to be likeable but always seem just stupid.... so, yeah, it's more interesting to watch more realistic characters.

You seem to be itching for a fight on this subject, and I know I usually get into arguments on here, but you don't seem actually interested in discussing the genre, you just seem interested in scoring points against people who *are* interested in it. So, what's the point?

gogocrank - I actually liked 9 SONGS. True, if you believe Ricky Roma's speech in GLENGARY GLEN ROSS about what people remember about having sex (for him, it's not the orgasm itself, but little things like the cup of coffee she made for him the next morning that he remembers), the movie may not ring true, but I found it a good way of observing a relationship.

As a Winterbottom fan, I am psyched to see this, and I have every confidence he'll handle the violence well, in every sense. I haven't read the Thompson novel yet, but I have it on hold at the library.
