Kaystew Wasatch

I'm way the hell back in the line of journalists looking for one-on-ones with Kristen Stewart during Sundance 2010. I realize that, and I know it's my own damn fault because I didn't work it soon enough. My chances are improved, I realize, by the fact that she's got two films playing there -- The Runaways and Welcome to the Rileys. But it's still going to be hard. What else is new?

Kristen Stewart in Welcome to the Rileys.

But I may as well say this out loud in hopes that the publicists (KStew's, the ones repping the films) may be reading and thinking things over. Not to put it too clumsily but I'd greatly appreciate a little face-time. 15 or 20 minutes, I mean. Because the Movie Godz have told me they need to take a closer look because the filters have been too thick so far.

I'm making this request as the only columnist who's written the following about KStew: (a) that she's "the GenY Marlon Brando/James Dean/Montgomery Clift," and (b) that during her ComicCon appearance last summer she "looked, frankly, kind of rock-and-rollish with a kind of cigarettes-and-booze attitude...a fascinating actress, but clearly not someone who's looking for peace as much as truth, even if it scalds."

A little gut twitch tells me Rileys might -- I say "might" -- be the better of the two, but we'll obviously know soon enough. I leave for Park City five days from now.

Jeff, you get these little fascinations with ingenues who are untested brands really, and both Kristin Stewart and Carey Mulligan fit the bill.

Mulligan is light years more talented than Stewart, who is the same in every picture. She was effective enough in the original Twilight and Into the Wild, but beyond that, hardly much to write home about anywhere else.

To call her anything like James Dean, Marlon Brando or Montgomery Clift is a bit flabbergasting and based on.....what? That she projects some sort of attitude? More often than not, her line readings sound somewhat cardboard, and she hasn't demonstrated much inner life yet; ditto any versatility at all. She's hardly "fascinating" even though she does give off that "rock and rollish...cigarettes and booze attitude." But that does not equate to actual acting. I doubt she could pull off a Bright Star, for example. To me, she always sounds like she's reading her lines verbatim.

Mulligan, on the other hand, is a real actress but I would say your fawning on her during the last six months has been entirely predictable.

P.S. I'm not trying to be a prick. Unlike Jeff, I generally believe it's impolite to criticize someone for their weight or physical appearance. But, I genuinely believe Gandolfini looks unhealthy and needs to do something soon.

Wells to bobbyperu: Great acting, I would argue, is more about close-to-the-surface hurt -- about the audience sensing the vulnerability and the anxiety and the turbulence and the trembling-whatever the very instant that the actor/actress hits the screen -- than about RADA technique.

The greatest actors have both, of course, but RADA doesn't amount to much if you don't have that first thing. My contention regarding Stewart is that she's got the first quality in spades and that the second is coming along nicely. Wait until she's 23 or 24. Mulligan has that just-below-the-surface current also but more expertise in the second category. And yet Stewart is stronger with that teeming animal-hurt thing, which is precisely what Brando/Dean/Clift had to start with. And if you don't know that about those three guys, you don't really know them.

You do at least acknowledge the validity of the possible opinion that Stewart is the "odd duck" out amongst the likes of Brando, Dean, and Clift, yes?

Once again -- imbued with the spirit of the Movie Godz? -- you're childlishly acting as though your point of view is the only rational perspective on things.

Pass the crackpipe.

So Stewart's the waitress in that Rileys thing? It sounds like she's taking her career in the same direction as Thora Birch, which may not necessarily be a good thing, if she wants to keep her name-brand after Twilight's over. But I can't deny that Princess Leia get-up she's in is hot.

Oh, my God, look at her. Most beautiful woman ever... There's so much K-Stew this year I can't wait -- Yellow Handkerchief and Twilight 3 as well; She's HYPNOTIC... on screen, in picture, personality-wise... You cannot take your eyes off of her for a second.

In a way she kind of reminds me of the early screen roles of Liv Tyler and Scarlett Johansson, im that they seemed to function as some wise-beyond-their-years ethereal fantasy muse for older men and middle-aged directors. But then you'd seen them in person, and Liv was just awkward, boring and wimpy; Scarlett was kind of a blowzy broad... But K-Stew IS the real deal, a genuine artist and stunning beauty with real soulfulness and chops and charisma on par with Brandon, Dean, Day-Lewis, etc.

Not that Jodie Foster was ever "hot" per se, but in terms of longevity and talent, K-Stew is EASILY next in line as heir to her throne. And considering how honest and natural Stewart is, we've got 10, 15 more years of her in her prime, ie, hopefully giving me time to get my SAG card and meet her and marry her. She is ENCHANTING beyond all belief... If I were ANY director or actor, I'd want to work with her just to be around her. Bewitching.

It's like, I see those pics or one of her awesome movies, and I'm like, THIS is EXACTLY what I want every woman to be like, this is exactly "my type" to a T. But she's like 19 and is in the biggest movies in the world, is beautiful and AWESOME; When I was 19, I had a mullet, wore Cross Colours, smoked Newports, and was listening to Surface, Bel Biv Devoe, The Humpty Dance, and Urban Dance Squad, all tipping cows and drinking Old Milwaukee while commuting to college and working in a factory.

People of America, what I am saying is, SUE YOUR PARENTS if they weren't stage parents willing to drive you to L.A. Now twenty years on, I'm stuck spot-scripting and tweaking transfers on softcore porn. Lot of good COLLEGE does. I should have been famous 15, 16 years ago.

And yet here's James Gandolfini, older and fatter than me, and he gets to BE IN THE ROOM WITH HER. Oh, my God. She's so incredible and talented and awesome, making it even more depressing knowing how great the world can be, but being a zillion miles away from acting and movies, stuck in a boiler room rotting away in a cubicle 60 hours a week 'cause I gotta make rent, only acting in student films for free that never catch on.

Maybe I should remake that MY DATE WITH DREW movie and call it MY DATE WITH K-STEW.

Kristen Stewart = perfection.

Burma: Catch That Kid!

I also have a relevant sidenote. A few weeks back, me and several of my gal pals were having Movie Night, and they selected PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, the Keira/Wright version.

Who should show up from time to time? Yep, CAREY MULLIGAN, looking about 13 (even though she looks mid-20s now).

This is one of my pet peeves about hype and "new" actors. When a Mulligan or Scarlett J., or some dude like Terrence Howard, finally hits a hot streak and gets all the cover articles, everyone acts like they were digging ditches one morning and found themself in a big movie by night. They did this with Danny McBride in '08, even though he was in a DAVID GORDON GREEN movie in 2002, and other stuff in between.

There's no such thing as an overnight sensation, and even those people have been kicking around. You don't just "happen" into PRIDE AND PREJUDICE when you're 13. When I'd hear these Mulligan stories about her mailing videotapes to Jim Sheridan and Michael Mann, I thought she was some plucky upstart with a dream. Turns out she'd probably been in acting guilds for half her life, and had agents and managers and representation since she was a LITTLE KID.

This is IMPOSSIBLE to achieve in one's late 20s, early 30s, and supernatural to attain, as I am, at age 36-37. How could I even possibly get an agent? Invite them to my Shakespeare class? Show them my David Poland cartoons?

The Catch-22 of this biz is impossible to overcome unless you GET IN AS A KID.

Indeed, Lex. I first took notice of Howard in BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE, in a sort of "Hey this guy is much better than this movie" way. That movie had Giamatti too.

Just off the top of my head, Alan Rickman and Rex Linn didn't start acting until their late 30s, early 40s. Varied careers obviously, but still, it's a crap shoot. If it's your passion you have a leg up already.

Also no joke in about another year I would not be surprised if you could get management as a personality. Continue with the blogging and writing. I mean don't listen to me I gave up film junior year of college, live in D.C., and honestly couldn't tell you what I do for a living.

I have this recurring fantasy that I take, if not K-Stew, let's say a similarly petite, edgy, serious, old-soul-type awesome chick in a HOODED SWEATSHIRT and CHUCK TAYLORS who "gets" me, and we go to the movies together and sit down front, like maybe at an arthouse or revival show seeing "Antichrist" or some Fulci movie, and she puts her Chuck Taylors up on the seat in front of her and our heads touch.

Lex, your uncontrolled lust for teen actresses is getting a *bit* creepy. I don't know what else to say about it. Also, you are projecting a lot onto her based on what you hope that she will be. This is also sad and, well, creepy.

Outside of that, your posts are entertaining (when they aren't creepy,) and your bit about Mulligan is spot-on. Everyone is an "overnight success" or plucked from obscurity when they have actually been working and trying for years. It's a story that has been repeated for decades.

45 minutes into FIERCE PEOPLE, and K-Stew has spent virtually every second of her screen time making out with... Anton Yelchin. NOT her finest hour. And Donald Sutherland pulled down his pants to reveal to Yelchin that he has no balls. What the fuck IS this movie?

Wiggumx, thanks for the props... some points well-taken in there, but young Hollywood actresses and pop stars are 20 years old with the life experiences of a 60-year-old jetsetter. K-Stew seems wiser, classier, better-traveled and with a better head on her shoulders than most shut-in 40-something friends of mine who are still wearing baseball caps and playing X-Box.

Hell, I've never even left North America in my 36 years, not even for a vacation. I haven't owned a car newer than a *1990*. I've never made more than 60K in a single year. None of that has much to with the subject at hand, but always amusing when people complain about objectifying "young starlets" like they're these delicate souls, as if some gas station sadsack catching a glimpse of Miley Cyrus's back in a tame photo shoot is some massive corruption of her innocence. Showbiz kids have generally seen or been around more sordid stuff by age 18 than a Tijuana nightclub proprietor.

*That doesn't apply to K-Stew, who is a delicate flower and sensitive and awesome and responsible, but just young Hollywood types in general. If we're talking "maturity age," most of them are about 47, and I operate at the mental level of an ADHD 15-year-old who hasn't found out that Nu Metal is played out yet and still wants to be Fred Durst. Only in the body of a good-natured, unexceptional, tubby dork who would probably pass out or at LEAST be rendered mute in her presence.

Lex G, Pride & Prejudice was actually Mulligan first acting job ever , she was 18 at the time not 13 and only got the job because the casting director wanted no actors for those small girls roles, the director thought they would give the film a more natural performances . After that film she got a few small parts and was doing British television, but she never was a child actress. She was literally a waitress before getting that gig.

Carey Mulligan has talked about her background countless times. Her father manages posh hotels. She grew up living in them. Went to posh schools. Actor/producer Julian Fellowes (who himself had an upper class upbringing) came to her school and that's how she made contact with him. If she indeed was a waitress, she chose to be a waitress instead of going to college. She has managed to establish herself as an actress and garner award attention in merely 6 years. She was never a struggling actress.

SPEAK is one of K-STEW's best and is highly recommended. Even though I'd seen her in Panic Room, Cold Creek Manor, etc etc by then, when I saw SPEAK I knew IMMEDIATELY she'd someday be the biggest actress in the world.

Raquelswell! HA! That is awesome... thanks for posting that. Absolutely NOTHING against Mulligan - she is charming, talented, and delightful - But this idea that she was some upstart on a British farm blindly mailing videos to American auteurs on a hope and a prayer is ludicrous. Again, you don't just START your career in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

And if *I* mailed some audition reels to big-time directors from my home address? Let's see how quickly those end up RTS'd or thrown into a bin. You can't submit videos to major directors and get considered unless you have MAJOR power behind you wanting you to happen. So, yeah, I highly doubt she was waiting tables in the London iHop at 8am and working with Donald Sutherland and Keira Knightley that night by sheer luck and happenstance.
