Producer Don Murphy has written an affectionate obit about manager Cathryn Jaymes on his site, and in so doing has dinged Quentin Tarantino, with whom he has a well-documented history (including fistifcuffs at Ago in the late '90s). He doesn't refer to former partner Jane Hamsher with much affection either. Here's the piece:

"In 1993 Quentin decided to betray our friendship. It's a long boring story that doesn't belong here, but he sold me and my ex-partner the rights to Natural Born Killers, acting friendly to our face, while stabbing us in the back. It was really nasty and just plain wrong. During this whole process, at considerable risk to herself, Cathryn helped us navigate the waters behind the scenes. She never once betrayed her client. She would never do that. But she knew what was right and what was wrong. She stuck up for us and was a better friend than her client and made sure we ended up okay. I'll never forget her kindness as long as I live.
"Cathryn could be tiring, but that was because she cared passionately about what she believed in. She had a wit, a sense of fun, and what more can I say, she was just freaking nice. She was often disrespected because she was this eccentric, small lady, but she never let it stop her. She believed in people.
"And I was there, also, when she finally got dumped by the 'successful' Tarantino and she was destroyed by it. Here was somebody who lived on her couch and was nurtured by her and gradually attained his dreams, and then took a giant shit on her. Nice. In Sharon Waxman's Wrap article it is pointed out that she never recovered. She didn't.
"When my former partner wrote "Killer Instinct," her book about Natural Born Killers, it was important to me that Cathryn read it to make sure the details were right, and also to make sure she was comfortable with how her support of us was portrayed. She took her time, was very helpful and fastidious, and when she came back with her notes my then-partner Jane Hamsher lost it on her, I guess this was because she didn't want to make changes. There are many reasons why our partnership ended soon after that book, but her treatment of Cathryn was a major factor.
"Over the last ten years or so Cathryn and I didn't interact often enough. She kind of cut back on managing. It appears she was sick. And she focused on actors more than writers. I would see her at events. I think I last saw her at a special CAA screening that Oliver Stone had two years ago. She was always friendly, supportive and cordial. There is no one I have met in this business in 16 years who I can say the same about.
"Death always sucks. But it sucks more when it happens to somebody who was really just a sweet human being. Godspeed, Cathryn. You wanted to be remembered as someone who was fair. You were all that and more."

So apparently, Tarantino has the magical ability to give a woman cancer. Who cares? Don Murphy gave the world Transformers. Should we all call him the antichrist for *that* plague on the world?
In all seriousness-- I'd sleep better at night knowing that everyone in Hollywood was nice, pleasant, drug-free and haters of child rapists. Alas, it's an overly-concentrated pool of narcissism and isolation from reality. The price we pay for art is the price we pay for all kinds of genius, whether in art or technology or medicine or finance or politics: we have to put up with really insufferable pricks.
At least Tarantino's a prick who's made great films. What's Murphy's excuse?

Another thing: as exhausting as this endless debate about who was better, who was more responsible for success, "ain't nothing as good as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction," etc., one essential, basic truth is lost: if Murphy and Avary were really such artistic geniuses as they (or more accurately, their third-party defenders) claim to be, how come Tarantino continued to have the artistic success, and they didn't?
It's a tough, but timeless lesson: creative geniuses regard other people as stepladders and baggage, and discard them as soon as they're done with them.
Also, water is wet, and I could use a sandwich right now.

I agree/disagree with this. People who are rotten are always rotten; the effects of that rot are just magnified by fame, money and power. There is no nobility in being poor-- I know plenty of poor people who don't deserve a dime of charity. Conversely, there are wealthy people who I would give *more* money to tomorrow if it would help them continue their good deeds.
Unrelated, but not: I've made a new year's resolution. I will continue to be honest in every editorial, blog post, and anonymous comment I make online this year, but I will refuse to say anything that I would not say to someone's face in polite company. Nobody anywhere online knows anybody-- all we have to go on is how our online personas act and react.
And frankly, how we all act and react is disgusting. I'll accept my blame for that, and I'll do my best to try and change. I just wish more bloggers and their readers did so as well, and recognize that their are human beings with diverse opinions and backgrounds and that it's okay to intelligently disagree with people without throwing around words like "evil," "disgusting," and "hate."
We should all strive to be the people online who we are in real life, whether we're anonymous or we have a paid byline.
Wish me luck.

Oh, and an observation. *Was* this obit about a woman I couldn't hold a candle to?
She sounds like a wonderful woman, honestly. Someone who I didn't know, but would probably have been blessed to have known. I am genuinely saddened for the loss suffered by her friends, including Mr. Murphy. I am sorry.
That said... it strikes me as poor form to use the occasion of an obituary for anyone, let alone someone you care so deeply about, to continue to settle old scores with people you have disagreements with. Tarantino may have treated her like shit, and perhaps we should know that, but in this venue? It's not as if he murdered her. I've had plenty of unfortunate setbacks in my life from people I don't very much like, but I would be disappointed if the first words my friends or family wrote about me after my passing consisted of dirty laundry.
Now's not the time.
(And I've been consistent on this point on HE, whether from the infamous Wells comments on Bob Clark while his body was still warm, or this story. I don't know any of these people-- I only know the words. And the words strike me as inappropriate for the occasion, and reflect poorly on their authors).

Crazynine- I at no point used the article for settling scores. I was telling the truth. In order to explain why I will be forever in Cathryn's debt, I needed to explain how she had helped us when QT was wronging us. I have not thought of these events or even QT in at least 7 years, but in the wake of Cathryn's death I have to again. I have nothing against QT anymore and wish him only the best. But the fact is in 1992/1993 he fucked me to my face and Cathryn helped me not get fucked. No ax- just ancient history.
Cathryn would never go on the internet or anywhere and attack a person she didn't know- she was polite and classy. You do that regularly, which is why you couldn't hold a candle to her.

Could have written something like "representing someone who wronged us....she was professional, never betraying her client, but went to great lengths to make things right with us," instead of launching a character attack against Tarantino. Transformers is a career dip? Of course, no one mentions QT's failed broadway performance or how the only reason he made a come-back was because he cashed in on the success of the Matrix, but without Pitt, his last movie would have been another Grindhouse.
nine: "if Murphy and Avary were really such artistic geniuses as they (or more accurately, their third-party defenders) claim to be, how come Tarantino continued to have the artistic success, and they didn't?"

And now that 'Basterds' is guaranteed to not just get nominated for Best Picture (which you guaranteed it wouldn't) but Best Director as well, you just recycle the same exact arguments you made about how it couldn't get nominated for why it can't win.
