Earlier today And The Winner Is columnist Scott Feinberg asked Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron to comment on the similarities between Strange Days and Avatar, the plots of which were both hatched sometime between '94 or '95.

There's something kinda cool about these two constantly reminiscing on the awards circuit about their creative bonds. That's probably what brought them together in the first place, so I bet aspects of that initial attraction are flooding back. I also think it's amazing, after so many of us have spent years defending the guilty pleasures of Kathryn Bigelow's filmography, that she's suddenly the most acclaimed filmmaker working anywhere right now.

No kidding, I used to have the "Strange Days" poster on my wall in college (the one with Ralph Fiennes cold stare and the words YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT underneath) and no one had ever heard of it. I'm wondering if sales/rentals/TV airings of her other movies have gone up. I've noticed that Titanic has been playing A LOT since Avatar came out but haven't seen an uptick in Bigelow films. (Point Break has a healthy TBS/TNT life anyway).
And there's just a small part of me that still wishes these two were still together. Stupid Cameron.
Jeff, do you have video of Peter Bart presenting Kathryn with the crown?

More like "smart Bigelow". I doubt it's tons of fun being married to a taskmaster/egomaniac like Cameron. Obviously she likes and respects him but I can't blame her for not wanting to spend every waking day with him.

I'm glad that DZ is able to take time out from his busy schedule of arguing that 'Avatar' is not a success and pretending to look for a job to still find us a list full of month old stories to read.

FWIW, I think AVATAR has more similarities to POINT BREAK (also written by Cameron, although uncredited) than to STRANGE DAYS.

"Strange Days" was an awful movie, though it was kind of cool to see what the world will look like in the year 2000.

strange days awful? um...c'mon...the film is, at the very least, a technical marvel/tour de force, and Bigelow's direction, as always, was vigorous. strange days was a major movie for me in my early movie-buff days.

I'm not so sure Strange Days ever quite fulfills the promise of its opening sequence -- which is absolutely fantastic & one of the best things she's ever shot, IMHO -- but it is a remarkably fun movie. Far from awful. If I put it on, I have a hard time not getting wrapped up in it.
Why on earth didn't (doesn't) Fiennes do more roles like this one? He played downtrodden and scummy oh-so-well. Where was his part in L.A. Confidential?

The problem with Strange Days is it looks too much like the year it was shot, rather than the year Bigelowe and Cameron wanted it to be.

Care to enlighten me on those "revolutionary changes" that took place from 1994 through 1999 that seem to have taken you out of the movie? I'm sorry, but the world looked more or less the same between those years; any "visual" differences would truly be negligible.
Anyway, couldn't your charge be leveled at nearly every sci-fi film, especially movies like Allen's Sleeper or Godard's Alphaville?

That's funny, because last night, I read a joke article about "future movies that got it wrong", which points out how stupid it is that 'Strange Days' posits so many futuristic changes would take place within four years.
But, yeah, I really want to hear more details about all the 1995 stuff that littered that movie that was gone by the year 1999.
