I can see right now where the Shutter Island discussion will go. Hip, older urban critics like Marshall Fine will do the usual solidarity thing (i.e., their standard response whenever a reasonably decent film by a venerated director comes out) and pass out "Friends of Marty" buttons at screenings and so on. And that's fine. A fair portion of their readers, of course, will feel a wee bit puzzled if not burned when they shell out their twelve bucks, but that's the rough and tumble of it.

Sorry Jeff the film is good. You have a bias just the same as everyone else if that wasn't evident throughout this Oscar season.

Geoff: Why? You can't praise Avatar without acting like a douche bag about another movie just because some people disagree? Hell, I don't even like Lord of the Rings that much, but there was no need to act like a character from Mean Girls about it.

Seriously, just a tad arrogant on Jeff's part. I do think Jeff is right about 75%, maybe even 80%, of the time but it's that other 20-25% that sometimes bugs the hell outta me. Hope he's right about Shutter but I'm seeing it for free anyhow.

"Shutter Island" looks like such a piece of crap -- I've been saying that since before it got bumped, since I saw the first preview. I really can't fathom why Scorsese would want to waste his time on something like this.

Sitting in DFW airport, boarding in ten. Trust me when I say that a good percentage of the critics quoted/linked by Yer very much wanted to like "Shutter Island" when they sat down in their screening-room seats. And then they saw it. And then they found a way to sing praises. The invisible subtitle of Yer's links is "Triumph of the Will.". Read David Ehrenstein's review. He shot true and straight.

Did you mean David Edelstein? Don't see any review by Ehrenstein - a critic who hates the Coens, btw. Enough reason to dismiss him in my world. Don't always agree with Edelstein, either. But it's a free world and open discussion is what it's all about, I hope.

No, you meant David Edelstein in New York magazine. Try again! Although the idea of David Ehrenstein shooting "straight" may amuse many, including Ehrenstein himself.
Include me among those who are "standing by Marty," although it's not a matter of standing by Marty (and where do you, or anyone who's not Thelma Schoonmaker or Kent Jones or in a similar situation, get off calling him "Marty," anyway?), but of finding a deeper dimension in the film, which you obviously don't think is there. But rather than try to argue that it's not there, you just dismiss the critics who have found that dimension, and accuse them of writing in bad faith. In all seriousness, Jeff...that's fucked up. But outsourcing your heavy lifting to Edelstein is a nice touch, I'm sure he'll appreciate it.
DFW airport? Wow, that's so awesome that they named an airport for David Foster Wallace...oh, wait...

Wells to Kenny: You know as well as I do, Glenn, that Scorsese occupies a hallowed place in the hearts of the older, brainier, more thoughtful critics, and that it's usually in keeping with the character of this crowd to cut Marty some slack whenever a new Scorsese film comes out. It's the same deal that Clint gets, and YOU KNOW THIS as well as I do. On top of which I know exactly what's going on with Shutter Island -- there's not some major thematic or stylistic scheme that going over or around my head. It's a forbidding, winds-swept, Boston-accented, beard-stubble, old-musky-asylum mood-fetish thing -- Scorsese laying it on all dark and cloudy and rain-soaked and haunted by the deaths of little ones. It's visually intriguing (while at the same oppressive) and obviously boasting the chops of a gifted filmmaker, but it's just not intriguing or subtle or spooky or sufficiently jacked to warrant serious raves. I know this. But throw in the attaboy-Marty, let's-all-cut-him-as-much-slack-as-we-can factor and you've got what amounts to favoring winds.

Well, fine then, Jeff; you've nailed a certain tendency in the brainier corners of film criticism. So now you're gonna arbitrarily place yourself above that group and make snide "Friends-of-Marty-button" jokes. But that's not posturing, no, not in the least; that's telling it straight. Sure, if you say so.
I'd lbe delighted to read detailed argument from you about the failings of "Shutter Island." That's all. Not Edelstein's. Yours.
