Last night's Santa Barbara Film Festival tribute was a presentation of Cinema Vanguard awards to Up In The Air's Vera Farmiga, An Education's Peter Sarsgaard, Inglourious Basterds costar Christoph Waltz and Precious star Gabby Sidibe. (Lovely Bones costar Stanley Tucci was also honored but in absentia -- he's directing a play in New York.)

Festival chief Roger Durling handled the introductions, patter and chit-chat with smoothitude and high intelligence. It was all to the good.
Sarsgaard was the wittiest, I thought -- he always is. Razor sharp, fast on his feet, straight-shooting, resistant to gushy platitudes, etc. I admired Waltz for his no b.s. answers and his general reluctance to grin too broadly. Farmiga's plain-spokenness was equally appealing. And Sidibe was cool -- she's very bright, confident, likable.
Durling declined to ask Sarsgaard why he had a Bruce Willis shaved-head cut. That would have been the first question out of my mouth. He's playing Hector Hammond in The Green Lantern -- maybe he had to go tennis-ball because he's wearing a wig or something.
It would have been cruel to ask Sidibe -- by all indications an emotionally vibrant woman with a healthy outlook on everything -- why she's so excessively obese, but that, honestly, was all I could think of as I sat there (second row, right in front of Sharon Waxman ) last night.

More Vera! I know certain HE posters that hold court here worship the teenage holy trinity and Jeff has been giving them the pub they deserve here of late, but (keepng in spirit of JWs train of thought), pound for pound, it is Vera that is the witty, naturally elegant, and most of all sexy, break out female star of the year.

Guess Stanley Tucci just lost any chance he had at winning.
I'm sorry but I'm only stating the obvious. This is my role in life, I suppose. I'm the guy who has to say, "Hey, look at that apple -- it's red with a stem protruding from the core." And get criticized for this.
No, you get criticized over this for two reasons - what Impotent Wells wrote (which will be deleted as soon as you return to the blog) and for wanting to talk about the apples when most of us want to talk about the damn pie.
To beat this metaphor to death, when I eat an apple pie, I just want to know if the apples were ripe, worm-less and good for the pie. I don't give a shit how red they were, how evenly colored, how long the stem was, how big they were - I just want to know they made a damn good fucking pie.
This is why my wife doesn't obsess about our daughters' appearances. She's more concerned about the ideas the media pushes on them about what is considered ideal or even normal.

I read Jeff's comments about Sidibe as legitimate concern for the future of her career.
She's an intelligent, likable woman who will, if she doesn't do something about her weight, at best, be typecast despite her acting ability or, at worst, have serious health problems.

All I've done here was tell the plain truth. Does that mean anything to anyone in Velveeta Cheese Nachos and Ben & Jerry Nation? I acknowledged that Gabby is bright, sweet, spirited, but she's got a disease -- that's a plain fact. As always, people who write insultingly, belligerently and abrasively get the heave-ho 'round these parts.

I worked with a fortysomething woman who was Gabby's size. She had a multitude of health problems, called in sick frequently and went home early a lot. She was in bad shape. That was a few years ago. I checked out this company's website recently and saw that she doesn't work there anymore. Hmmmm.....

Really, Jeff? You view that as your role in life? I would really hope a guy with your considerable intellect would strive for a much more meaningful role. You do nothing by "stating the obvious." You say nothing. You mean nothing. It's empty consideration and pointless discussion.
A substance-phile like yourself, I would imagine, wouldn't indulge in something like that. If you would jsut come out and admit to sensationalism for its own sake, I think I and maybe others would just let it go. But to pose any of that nonsense as anything approaching a valid and noble crusade, it's dishonest, and quickly becoming the legacy you're leaving.
Is that what you want?

That's horseshit, Kris. And I don't care for your tone of threatening condemnation. I cover tons of material every day, and this was one little observation in the midst of a longish post with photos, three videos, commentary and careful structure. You're all sounding like a mob of p.c. brownshirts. I merely observed an obvious blatant fact along with considerable respect shown for Gabby's talent and personality, and you and yours are jumping on me? Stuff it, Kris.

The bottom line is this: a story about an extremely overweight woman was written. It was then made into a movie. The director had a choice of casting someone like Zoe Saldana, who could pack on, say, 30 pounds and pretend that that counted, or he could hire someone who really is that size. These stories are to be told. Who is going to tell them but women who actually have those characteristics? Everyone knows, including Gabby, that it isn't healthy. But it's the beside the point where Oscar campaigning and film criticism is concerned.
She probably will decide to get in better shape after this long and rather humiliating process. She probably will, for her own sake, get healthier. But she shouldn't do it because (insert a whole bunch of insults about this site and its readers that would get me banned and deleted for) say she should; it's her decision. It's her body.
In fact, it's more dangerous to drive around with a cell phone while texting, to drink and drive, to chain-smoke. But notice how no one cares if models and actresses smoke? As long as it keeps them thin.

Mob thuggery? I'm not speaking to the mob, or with it, I'm speaking to my own feelings on your behavior and what you choose to print. It's, honest to God, offensive. That can't be so difficult to understand.
Yes, you observed a fact. What, though, was the point of that observation? Other than mean-spiritedness, what does it accomplish?
You don't have to care for my tone of condemnation but I do condemn this kind of rather despicable reportage. Ban me if you must. But don't play it as "one little observation." It is a consistent them in your work as of late and is hardly a passing commentary. It was actually 149 words of a 323 word piece, so nearly half.
And that's before we once again get into the pointlessness of said commentary. The only question remaining is: Why? Is it the thrill of being the only person willing to go there? Is it the rush you get as a renegade in your field? Seriously, I don't want to put you on the couch, but I'm genuinely curious what you think you're accomplishing with this.

As a woman of color, and maybe the only one posting here (who knows? cares?), I do take offense at what Wells wrote, as I did when he called Mo'Nique a "primitive."
You know, Wells, when normal people have a insane impulse to belittle the appearance of others, we hold our tongues because that is what civilized folks do. At your advanced age, it is, clearly, too late to teach an old dog new tricks.
Then again, this vitriol is coming from an old white man who is afraid to update that pic of himself from the 80s at the top of the page.
Glass houses, sir.

If you really aren't prejudiced against those who are overweight, if you were merely just making an observation, then why is it that out of the four guests on the panel, the only one who didn't get a video of their own was the fat girl?
Or is there some more disturbing, pernicious reason for this?
