There was an LA screening last night of Oliver Stone's Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (20th Century Fox, 4.23). A friend of a friend attended. The first blast (i.e., from the guy who talked to the guy) read as follows: "I've heard it's a strong return to form for both Stone and Douglas. It also proves Shia can play with the big boys. A surprisingly satirical movie. It's the first time I've heard a Stone movie described as 'fun.'"

Satirical? Really? I asked for a bit more, and the following came in an hour ago: "It's an entertaining movie with Shia a better match for Douglas than Sheen, who was a stiff. It's a sardonic, slightly satirical film with Josh Brolin and particularly Frank Langella scoring well.
"Stone handles the show without either his heavy left hand or his neutered right one that made W not what we'd hoped it. Douglas is the big-ticket item, of course, and revisiting this character is clearly a joy for him as he navigates his way through a world where he's a player holding a very different hand. Gekko is dealing with stocks while taking his own, and seems like a cobra who's conflicted about whether to bite...or just charm.
"People will show up for this one, so Fox was right to get it out there quick."
I then wrote Wall Street 2 producer Ed Pressman, who got back with the following: "Oliver's first cut is brilliant, witty, complex and emotionally powerful. I couldn't be happier."
I was still kind of wondering about the slightly satirical element, so I called someone familiar with Stephen Schiff's original script.
"I don't know whether you ever read Schiff's script," he said, "but there are definitely satirical elements in it (the chatter of the hedge-fund guys, the huge Robin Hood Foundation-like charity gala, the Dubai material, the Russian oligarch, the Asian commodities specialist with his Maybach, etc.). Of course, Oliver has always been a fairly earnest filmmaker, but I don't think satire is particularly rare in his work.
"Natural Born Killers, whether you enjoyed it or not, is certainly satiric in intent from start to finish, and so is W. There is a lot of satiric content as well in Wall Street and Talk Radio and U Turn, and I would argue that there's some as well in Salvador, Nixon and The Doors.
"Keep in mind, too, that a lot of satire is in the playing. A line or a scene may or may not look satirical on the page, but can be turned in that direction in the performance and even in the cutting."

Douglas is the real thing in my eyes for this reason - he's that rare breed who can handle films with wall-to-wall dialogue like WALL STREET as well as first-person narratives where the audience is with his character for the entire running time e.g. BASIC INSTINCT, THE GAME, WONDER BOYS. In essence, he can do some heavy fucking lifting.

I dont think Sheen was a stiff ... I think he played the part of a wide-eyes kid from Queens with a blue collar background rather convincingly. It might not jive with the image that circle-jerk Wall Street haters have of brokers and bankers all being arrogant, narcissistic Scott-Cann-in-Boiler-Room types, but it's certainly representative of a lot of the kids I grew up with who went on to work on Wall Street. Yes, there are a ton of blue blood ivy league scumbags, but there are also a lot of working-class types from all over the country/globe who are smart with skills that are applicable in a field where there's tons of money to be made. They're not ALL douchebags.

I don't think they had any other choice but to go satirical. They couldn't match the intellectual venom of the first, not with Stone so far past his prime. This is clearly a "what the hell" project, not an "I have something I need to say" project. The best you can really hope for is that it's entertaining, though ultimately I'm sure it'll be regarded as a slightly embarrassing addendum.

Hmm. In that case, they'll definitely need another trailer, because the two that are out have definitely pitched it as a straight drama. Loeb's script from last year (which is easily available online) reads pretty much like a serious morality drama to me too.

I'm mystified by the late April release of this--usually the last weekend is a dumping ground--and I think maybe this test (?) screening might help Fox decide whether to move it to the Fall for awards because opening against MacGruber and The Losers isn't going to help it bring in the guys who might normally see it.

Oy. The ones mentioned would have to *be* "cliches" before you could get to "other" cliches.
And, yes, Charlie Sheen was quite "stiff" in WS, to put it mildly. And not every other broker in that film was portrayed as a douche. But if you had other points, I'm sure at least one of them would be a good one.

I think most of us assumed they had to do reshoots or something after its test screening but he says that wasn't the case and that they were just figuring out a good time to release it. Not sure late April is it... neither it nor MacGruber is going to have much legs cause every theatre is going to give Iron Man 2 all the screens they can.

linaf: It'll only be a big hit if it didn't go over-budget on Shia's salary and shooting in NYC. And if you can get the 18-25 demo to stop negatively equating Wall Street brokers with frat-boy Republicans, Christian recruitment booths, and the greedy Boomers who put them in this Great Recession in the first place. The first one did really well for its budget and time, but even a bigger film like Predator, from that same year hasn't been able to strike lightning twice. So a sequel to a film which clearly skewed towards a different mind-set and generation of movie-goers is an even riskier bet.
The problem with The Losers is none of the actors are recognizable and the concept doesn't scream "must-see". It feels like a limp cash-in on S.W.A.T. seven years too late.

hmm..LaBeouf was on Jimmy Kimmel last night promoting the film. But they need to really get moving next month with the marketing. I've only seen the trailer in the theater once, before Edge of Darkness, and that was the teaser. I thought for sure the full trailer would be before Shutter Island, but no.... RIGHT !!?!!!!

mm..the Losers doesn't look like SWAT very much, but it does look like the A-Team which is opening the week later, if they are sticking with their current release date. It feels like a March movie but they're opening it in the peak of summertime, which is an odd move. !!

Its good to see Shia getting a lot of quality roles. Before transformers he had some small supporting roles (as far as I know), and he hasn't been boxed in to the transformer - Sam Witwicky character, and able to get noticed elsewhere, good news for a good actor.stop snoring
