I think it was unfair and ungracious of Oscar producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman not to include Farrah Fawcett in last night's death-tribute reel. Fawcett began on the tube, of course, but she was an industry-community person as much as anyone else, and she gave highly respected performances in at least two features -- Extremities and Alan Pakula's See You In The Morning. And let's not forget her fine work in The Burning Bed, a powerful made-for-TV flick.
I didn't see Ron Silver in last night's tribute either, although I may have missed him. Was Edward Woodward included? I know Bea Arthur wasn't, and that they also blew off Marilyn Chambers, basically for blowing too many guys in too many porn films. Incuding her would have established an unwelcome precedent, I realize, but Chambers was as famous and influential a performer in the early 1970s as Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Cybil Shepard or Barbra Streisand were in their realms. She wasn't a real "actress", of course, but Average Joes and Janes knew her quite well. She was as iconic in her own way as Muhammud Ali.

Iconic as Ali?
Behind the Green Door was an iconic title, but I don't think Chambers herself rose to the recognition level of Ali -- or even Howard Cosell. "I'm here with Marilyn Chambers, of Green Door fame. Marilyn, what do you make of the claims that you have a better right hand than Sonny Liston?"

Dr. T & The Women. The Apostle. Cannonball Run. She definitely should have been in.
And because not enough people are talking about it, and the Academy botched the memoriam segment yet again, can the Academy please have the television broadcast go immediately to the footage of the honorees once those segments begin? It was ridiculous and disrespectful that the television audience was looking at a wide shot of the Kodak Theater thus rendering the first few on the list almost invisible. Last year it was much worse with the Queen Latifah camera coverage, but this was still bad. Nothing at all against James Taylor intended - I like the live performance accompaniment; I just think it should not be the focus.

Fawcett, again snubbed while Jackson got the spotlight. Gibson and Arthur left out altogether, because they are all perceived as "TV people."
Edward Woodward is a major blunder, especially considering that BREAKER MORANT was nominated and WICKER MAN is such a "giant" cult film.
Again, it was the most ineptly produced, written and directed shows of the last couple of decades.

Let's see:
Fawcett was paired with Kurt Douglas and Harvey Keitel in Saturn 3.
She was in the Apostle which got some nominations and she was actually thought as a potential nominee herself.
Cannoball Run obviously.
Logan's Run was a pulp classic.
We can go on and on.
The Academy is pathetic!
And the interesting thing about Best Picture is though the Hurt Locker was a great flick and deserving, will it be put on any top 100 lists in the future? Probably not as many as Avatar or Up in the Air or IG would or could have if they had won.
It is all soooooo pedestrian!

They fucked up at the beginning as well, you only saw Swayze on the stage screen, not the TV screen. This is really outrageous. No Gibson, No Fawcett. How many movies did Michael Jackson make? THE WIZ and that posthumous concert movie? Mechanic and Shankman are two dumb motherfuckers.

Bea Arthur was banned from In Memoriam for her participation in the Star Wars Holiday Special.
But yeah, big fail not to have Farrah Fawcett in there.
Who was the second name? Patrick Swayze was first, but the camera was still far away to make out who the second name was.
Poorly directed show. Probably will still get nominated for best directing of a variety show at the Emmys in 5-6 months.

Dan O'Bannon writes the screenplay for arguably one of the best sci-fi flicks ever and also one of the best crossovers to horror!
He was part of John Carpenter's crew back in the day.
He directs Night of the Living Dead which arguably made films like Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and Zak's Dawn of the Dead possible.
And his tribute was being kicked to the curb!
Great one again, Academy!

I read a lame academy response about Farrah not being included, saying there were only 30 slots, so she didn't make the cut.
They just expanded the best picture slots from 5 to 10, but that 30 # for the memorials is sacrosanct.

Gibson was also recurring on BOSTON LEGAL for much of its run. And most people aren't aware that he actually did four Altman movies, as well as several for Dante, plus Wilder, P.T. Anderson, Landis, Jerry Lewis, etc. His was probably the most grievous oversight of all.
And no one's mentioned Richard Todd, who actually scored a Best Actor nomination.
