Let me get this straight: The man who sang Heroin, Venus In Furs, Perfect Day, Sweet Jane, Dirty Blvd. and I'm Waitin' For My Man, and who recorded Metal Machine Music, The Bells and Berlin, is hawking an iPhone app called "Lou Zoom."

Oh, and incidentally: Death to AT&T.

You have to remember - Lou is a) kind of crazy, and b) not above being a shill. Remember the ad he did for the Honda scooter in the 80's ("hey, don't settle for walkin'")???? The thing is, he's so fucking cool that he can get away with shit like this. Even if he lives to be 100, those four years of the Velvet Underground give him cool points that simply will not expire, in my opinion at least. Go to youtube and watch that scooter commercial again, set to the instrumental break in "Walk on the Wild Side" - beyond awesome.

Apparently, times are tight. But then again, all of those guys have shilling for corporate America for years.

Iggy Pop and Royal Caribbean, anyone? Bowie bonds?

I love how a "family-friendly" cruise line uses Lust For Life in their ubiquitous ads, watching shots of kids on watercraft vehicles zooming around to a song with references to shooting heroin.

I always looked at these guys licensing their songs for ads as kind of a 401k for old punk dudes.

Vinessa, I too find the irony of Lust for Life's use in commercials pretty funny. As funny as an anthem about handjobs being used to hawk an operating system back in the day. Either advertising guys have no clue what the songs are about, or they have a wickedly subversive sense of humor.

It's not shocking to see Lou Reed and/or one of his songs in a big corporate commercial. The outrage is that Lou Reed has named an app after himself, and instead of steering you toward NYC's hottest contemporary speakeasies, art installations or drug dealers, all it does is fit your iPhone with fucking grandpa glasses. I mean, can it at least include a ringtone that sounds like a broken fuzz pedal or some shit?

I don't even know what an APP is but it would RULE if they had one for K-Stew, Mulligan, Fanning and Zoe Bell and they did a commercial where they hopped around barefoot with LOLLIPOPS and said "LOOK AT MY LITTLE PHONE, LOOK AT MY LITTLE PHONE YAAAAAAAAY You can follow us 24/7 on our LITTLE PHONE" and the phone would be all PINK AND SPARKLY.

And the song on the commercial could either be some MILEY or SNEAKERNIGHT or at least that Scarlett Johansson thing where she improved Tom Waits.
