This is one of several mock movie posters posted yesterday afternoon by College Humor's Tom Philips. The fundamental beef about A Serious Man wasn't that Michael Stuhlbarg's Larry Gropnik character is boring -- there's no such thing as a boring Coen brothers film -- but that he seemed to have only wimpy responses to the cruel manifestations that resulted from God's decision to curse his life.

Proving that yes Collge Humor indeed is one of the most retarded things in the pop culture lexicon next to Flavor Flav and Jersey Shore.

No, the complaint was that *he's* boring (which is not the same as saying the film is boring), but it's coming from people who don't like the movie, so you've already dismissed their opinions anyway.

That was much funnier than I thought it'd be. In fact, the Serious Man poster is really the only dud of the group.

I agree with Massey. The Serious Man spoof poster seems to be the only unfunny one. The Blind Side, Up, and Precious did make me LOL pretty hard though.

"Up In The Air one was great"
Confessing I did laugh but George did not phone it in. A full circle part and performance............
even though both George and his character are suave older men.

Forget this is by the Coens (untouchable icons in the eyes of many film critics) and ask this:
What are the basic rules of drama? (1) Active protagonist/s with a problem. (2) Conflict that produces (either immediately or ultimately) change.
I'm not talking about the Hero's Journey, I'm talking about all drama, whether highbrow, low or middle, whether cinematic or theatrical.
Measured against this yardstick it's not surprising that some viewers find the film's protagonist boring (when I saw the film at least 20% of the audience left the cinema before the end). He appears to have been deliberately engineered by the Coens to make viewers tear out their hair. Certainly he has a problem - many. The trouble is he does mostly nothing about them. As a result the narrative remains inert, episodic, flat. There's no spark, except for those too few scenes where he takes matters into his hands (demanding to see the rabbi who he's been told is too busy and marching right in to his office).
More typical of his behaviour is that when he sleeps with his neighbour he has little say in the matter - she pulls him in, makes all the moves and he goes along with it.
Nearly everything happens TO our Serious Man. He does nothing in return. You can call this many things, but you can't call it drama. Compared to Hamlet, who some folks like to cite (incorrectly) as a successful instance of a passive protagonist, Larry Gopnick is about as interesting - as a bag of cement.

Are Jeff and 9 follow-up commenters really not getting the joke that they're saying the MOVIE is boring, not "Larry Gopink"?
A BORING MAN = Funny. It's no more a comment on the character or the themes than if it their mock poster had said BOREVATAR or UP IN THE BORE or INGLOURIOUS BORESTERDS.
Mad respect for Jeff and everyone who posts here, but this is almost like trying to explain to Sarah Palin (or her fans) that for COMEDY PURPOSES, it really doesn't matter which daughter was at the ballgame. One of them got knocked up and everyone with a brain knows who the joke is referring to. Same deal here: Serious Man is boring to most people, and the poster could just have easily said A SERIOUS BORE. The joke is the boredom, not the character defaults of Larry Gopnik.

Actually, he does do one thing -- one small thing, involving an eraser and a pencil -- and is swiftly and mercilessly punished for it. That's the joke, and the point of the ending.

I think Fudge Ripple got it. The prologue says it all: you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Literally.
