A longstanding policy at a certain studio has been to provide certain producers and production companies with box-office tracking reports as a courtesy. No big deal, been happening for ages. This morning the following e-mail was received from studio management: "Due to the ongoing debate about the potential trading of Movie Futures, [studio name] has instituted a policy that no one without a studio e-mail address will be receiving tracking reports from this department. Thank you for your understanding." Thank you , Cantor Fitzgerald LP!

I still don't really understand this system. The studio can sell a portion of the movie's profits for a fixed sum prior to release, and therefore if it's a flop the studio will have guaranteed itself that fixed amount in income? But if it's a hit, the investor will receive the profits and the studio will be stuck with its fixed price that it sold the stake for?

How is this not subject to huge insider trading?

I know quoting George Lucas is a sure way to bring the ire on, but "I have a bad feeling about this ..."

Is this just a way for Wall Street types to short sell their investments in films? I mean, it worked so well for them in the housing market ...

so a certain studio was releasing (paid for) proprietary information to unauthorized users who had not paid for the tracking reports. but now they're not going to get the information they were never entitled to in the first place. sucks to be them!
