Indiewire's Anne Thompson reported yesterday that word 'round the Cannes campfire says that neither John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole nor Bruce Robinson's Rum Diary will be "done in time." I hadn't heard that. I'm sorry. That's a shame.
I'm presuming, of course, that "not done in time" is a euphemism in the case of Rum Diary. Because it was shooting in Puerto Rico an entire year ago so...you know, c'mon. The film is apparently experiencing issues of one sort or another.
On the other hand Shoot Online.com posted a press release on 3.29 about Nina Saxon Design (which has composed Rum Diary's main-title sequence). It says that the film is "currently seeking distribution at the Cannes Film Festival."

I had heard that there might be some friction with "Rum Diary" because Tim Burton is the head of the competition committee at Cannes this year and Johnny Depp stars in the film. Some worries about favortism or inequities?? Doesn't sound kosher and I doubt this would be a legit reason. Don't know if a business/personal partnership has interferred with a decision like this before. I thought the filming was wrapped over a year ago. I guess stay tuned. Just wonder if anyone heard the same.

Hopefully, Thompson's news is incorrect. I'm really looking forward to The Rum Diary.

Tim Burton in charge of a Cannes jury? That's like putting Stephenie Meyers as the head of the Caldecott Medal committee.

While a Depp film being looked at by a Burton-headed jury seems like an unfair combination, we should remember that Michael Haneke collaborator Isabelle Huppert was in charge last year when The White Ribbon took the Palme d'Or.
I doubt Rum Diary has much of a chance to contend, and I'm sure the rest of the jury will find a better actor to award--how hard could that be, anyway?

it wouldn't, it should still be eligible for an out of competition slot if nothing else

as an aside, Huppert supposedly wasn't all that wild about Ribbon -- rumor is she wanted to give the Palme to Antichrist, which would've been AWESOME

Bob you're wrong. Some of her fellow jury members accused Huppert of unfairly pushing The White Ribbon on to them. Do some research.

my source was a festival programmer (not for Cannes admittedly) who has been pretty reliable about these things before, which also lines up with every behind-the-scenes report I could turn up via Google

Every year at Cannes, people who voted for the losing movie accuse somebody on the jury of pushing the winning movie on them. Same thing happened with Tarantino, until he pointed out that he hadn't actually voted for the movie that won either.
