Difference is, Maher is a COMIC GENIUS, and Stewart is some smart-ass 27-year-old Andrew Dice Clay lookalike with fake chalk-dust in his hair. Wasn't this guy an MTV veejay in the early '90s? Who made Jon Stewart an authority on anything? It'd be like Jon Sencio or Rikki Rachtman holding court and setting the national debate.
Maher is the funniest thing ever, so I don't get why the same web-board lefties who worship Comedy Central and their whitebread, poor man's Olbermanning somehow have a distaste for Maher, the greatest comic mind of our age.

Your all over the map, Lex. That's been part of my disappointment with Maher over the past few years. When he at least made the effort to look even-handed he was actually funnier. His bald hatred of the right and desire to fire up his sycophantic audience leads him to worry less about being clever or funny as much as it does to score points.
I'm sorry, but saying, "George Bush is so stupid, he's retarded" may get the libs in his audience to hoot and holler ("It's funny because it's TRUE!"), it doesn't make it clever.
The last stand-up special I saw of his was basically just him bitching about stuff for 90 minutes.
BTW... taikwan... where have you been? "Faux News" is SO last year. The current one is "Fucts Noisy Chunnel". I mean really. Get with it.
And the person who plays LexG is really pushing the envelope if he thinks we're going to believe that he thinks Andrew Dice Clay is funny. And funnier than Jon Stewart at that.
HOLY CRAP! I just saw Tony Curtis being interviewed on TCM. What happened!? He looks like he's 103. Bald and in a wheel chair. Still amusing, though.
"The last stand-up special I saw of his was basically just him bitching about stuff for 90 minutes."
Are you somehow new to the form of "stand-up comedy?"
I actually like Maher, but I do agree that he should spend more time on being funny and less time on making "points," though...we currently have enough pundits to make the world go 'round several times over.
Dennis Miller has the exact same problem -- had it for years now, actually -- on the other side of the political spectrum.
What side am I on? I'm not on either side. I assume you mean the left. I'm not on the left, or the right. Idiot.
And yeah, there are no smug, arrogant self-righteousness on YOUR SIDE. Which is the conservative republican side, as much as you try to deny it.

Unfortunately, I've given you nothing to make that assumption. You've given me plenty to come to the conclusion that you don't watch Maher's show, and probably never have.

CitizenKaned.... yeah, I'm familiar.....
But bitching should be FUNNY bitching.... (George Carlin, i.e.)
Saying something along the lines of "The problem with Washington is they're all a bunch of fucking liar assholes!" maybe true and get applause of agreement from the crowd, but it ain't that funny in and of itself.
And no, Miller does not have the same EXACT problem.... (yeah, he's on "my side" so of course I'd say that, but really)
IF YOU LISTEN TO HIM, Miller often goes out of his way to say things like "hey, I'm not expert on this, but....." or "I don't know, I just THINK...."
Now, a lot of that isn't so much where they stand politically, it's just their own style, but it's what makes Stewart (and Miller) more enjoyable to watch than Maher... Maher makes his statements with the, yes, smug arrogance of someone who is above questioning. "I declare this to be so!" And why not? The trained seals in his audience perform auditory felacio on him.
Posted by Travis Crabtree at April 25, 2010 12:27 PM
But I think Miller is equally smug, albeit in a slightly more entertaining way (did you not see him in the MNF booth? That was the peak of arrogance!). Anyway, that whole "I'm no expert on this" is just kind of his faux-layman shtick dating back to the years when he actually was funny. Christ, that was a long time ago.
Then again, our sense of humor probably doesn't converge a whole lot. I don't really find Jon Stewart all that "funny" -- although I think he's plenty smart -- and I always thought George Carlin was horribly overrated -- one of those relics that Boomers keep desperately to immortalize as a way of deluding themselves into thinking their culture still matters in the modern entertainment landscape.
Lex, solid bet you don't ever watch Maher or Stewart, but appreciate that Maher is banging strippers in a limo. I appreciate it too, but humor-wise, he's still R-rated Jay Leno.
I watch Maher every single Friday night, have seen him live, and in summer '05 watched his "I'm Swiss" concert almost daily. I also own DC Cab on DVD. I am a huge fan of his outspoken material on religion. When he gets all whiny about THE ENVIRONMENT or THE FOOD IN OUR SUPERMARKETS ISN'T SAFE TO EAT, I lose a little interest, but Real Time is one of the few things I never miss. No one asked, but I also watch a fair amount of The Factor and think O'Reilly is a great showman. Both Maher and O'Reilly are dynamic broadcasters whether you agree with them or not. Maher's monologue has its Leno moments, but NEW RULES and the panel are almost always solid. So was that bit from Friday's show about carnival oddities in 2010, including "the co-ed with actual pubic hair." And the Justin Bieber joke the previous week was GOLD.
Stewart, you got me there. Don't watch it, don't care. You guys think MAHER is smug and preaching to the applause of trained seals? The same Maher who gets booed with some regularity and who browbeats his audience for not going along with him sometimes? Who welcomes conservative guests on every week and usually cedes the floor to them with respect for respectful debate? As opposed to the LITTLE KID FROM MTV IN 1992 who somewhere along the way started doing political material? What's next, Pauly Shore gonna become a firebrand Olbermann type talking head? Smart-ass, white-bread, frat-prick MTV BEACH HOUSE douchebag trying to do political humor.... Stewart is a poseur. He should be hosting Colin's Sleazy Friends with his buddy Dino, or filling in for TJ Lavin on the Road Rules Challenge. A LIGHTWEIGHT who probably needs a THESAURUS to make his "intelligent" points. It's like a little kid playing dress-up. Plus he seems a trillion times more unpleasant, sour, asshole-ish and insular than Maher. He's the male Garofolo, or the richer Patton Oswalt. All HATEFUL.
I'm not going to say you're wrong, but Stewart has probably been the best political voice on television for at least 7 years, comedic or otherwise. What the fuck does it matter where he started (he always tried to do his own thing more than most, incidentally)? Letterman was a weatherman, Dennis Miller hosted a kids show, who gives a shit... This is America.
"Who welcomes conservative guests on every week and usually cedes the floor to them with respect for respectful debate"
this really proves you don't watch. I mean you're just playing very very old tapes.
Hey now -- you back off my Janeane! Seriously, she did have her day -- I distinctly remember being a fan the second I heard her (very early) routine on feeling the sudden uncontrollable urge to punch someone in the middle of sex.
What on earth happened to her? She was ubiquitous throughout the 90s -- in a good way, I thought -- The Ben Stiller Show (one of the most underrated sketch variety shows EVER), Seinfeld, TV Nation, her l'il bit comedy parts in flicks like Reality Bites (MY SHARONA!), Cable Guy, Mystery Men (which she KILLED in), and even giving surprisingly decent "straight" dramatic performances opposite some very decent actors in CopLand and Clay Pigeons. Weird to think what would have happened if she actually landed Zellweger's part in Jerry Maguire, but I sorta doubt she was ever that close to playing a romantic lead opposite Tom Cruise.
I will agree with you on one thing -- this transition from stand-up comic to political pundit has to be one of the most awkward transitions in the world. I have no idea why someone would even attempt it. Shit, it seems more seemless for Schwarzenegger to segue into the profession (after all, if you can get away with not looking goofy in that Conan get-up, you can probably get away with spewing all sorts of lies). How does one base nearly an entire routine on bashing seemingly the entire political system -- in 1996, and a mere ten years later we're supposed to take her completely seriously when she takes a "sobering" look at the American political landscape? I'm surprised she even had guests on her Air America program, but I supposed when you're Ralph Nader, you take whatever (little) press you can.
Anyway, rant over. She looks very strange now -- have you seen her? I think she's had some extensive work done -- at least facially -- which is pretty damn funny considering that was one of her major rallying points in her act, esp. later in her career once she attained celebrity status.
Every week he has some blowhard conservative dude on and gives him ample time. Just Friday he had that dude who wrote the "defense of Palin book" on the panel (that smarmy Young Republican looking dude with the Italian name I'm too lazy to look up... he's on constantly.)
IN FACT, if you ever read idiotic TWOP's Maher forum, one of their (left-leaning) chief complaints is that Bill has TOO MANY right-wingers on the panel. Almost every week he has at least one big-time Republican. Stephen Moore seems to be on every week and ALWAYS monopolizes the conversation to Bill's delight... Same with that conservative HUMORIST dude PJ O'Rourke that Maher loves so much.
Anybody that watched or paid attention to the show would know this. And although the audience is obnoxiously biased, Maher always quiets them and lets the conservative guy give his side.
He doesn't shut off their mic's or shout over them like that douche O'Reilly.
But you'd have to watch the show to know any of this.
Lex, there are all kinds of women. Also no one doubts Maher's equal time credentials, but Stewart has on conservatives all the time, they're some of the liveliest conversations you'll see on television. Another thing you'd know if you ever watched the show instead of insisting it is like Kurt Loder trying to be Charlie Rose. As for Janeane, she was cute (not hot), and funny before she went off the deep end. But since you're so frazzled, I feel bad, here:
It's funny but Maher has contradictions of his own. The time he had Michael Moore on he kept insisting throughout the that he did not share Moore's thoughts on capitalism. He then complains about how food is produced. He complains that oil companies work to deny the severity of global warming.
Food companies don't produce bad food because they just want to be evil. They do it because they profit from it. Also his views on the Israel-Palestinian conflict are pretty reactionary.
Curious that my incredibly horrible (ie, worse than usual) mood is detectable even from my lame internet postings about Bill Maher, actresses, horror movies, etc. today. Three days sans booze and all.
Don't even make me re-post your "top musical acts of the last 15 years" here. Not only weren't there any metal bands listed (real metal, not this limp bizquick sheeit!), somehow the estrogen power-pop of Third Eye Blind and Goo Goo Dolls (jeeeezus, the name alone should be enough to disqualify them) made the ranking.
And if all that weren't enough, you have one of the all-time fakiest artists of all-time -- a real record label creation -- inexplicably clocking in at #4. Now I don't know if it's because you have a thing for Canadian chicks with runny mascara, or you just daydream about grabbing her leg while she gives you a sk8-job, but neither of these are good reasons for deluding yourself into being a fan of her "music" (her aura is another thing entirely, I can dig it).
So, having said all that, I feel pretty comfortable admitting I used to enjoy the comedic stylings of one Ms. Garofalo. Find her intelligence and self-deprecation absolutely charming. But I guess you like females more demure, and prefer when they stammer and stare awkwardly down at their feet (and hopefully they're not wearing any shoes!).
True. I've watched over a dozen clips online of him shouting down his guests, turning off their mics, and cutting an interview short when they were winning the argument. When I'm at my dad's house he has him on quite a bit and I've seen more of his disgraceful behavior that way.
But I've only sat and watched an entire show a couple of times and never in the past three or four years.
Now we know the difference between you and me. I'm honest. You're a liar and a coward.
End of story.

Yeah, as I guessed. Dude, watching selected, out-of-context clips on the Media Matters website does not constitute "watching a show".
It's okay if you don't watch O'Reilly. I don't watch it but for every once in a while. But don't act like you do.
I've watched many entire Maher shows. Recently. In fact I've been to a couple.

I hit a nerve. I knew I was right, now there's no doubt.
"Yeah, as I guessed. Dude, watching selected, out-of-context clips on the Media Matters website does not constitute "watching a show"."
How are they out of context if they're full interviews? I'm not talking about compilations, or short excerpts. Full interviews where the back and forth tracks. And he always acts the same way when challenged. I'm guessing you don't watch his show either.
"It's okay if you don't watch O'Reilly. I don't watch it but for every once in a while. But don't act like you do."
I never said I watch it all the time. I'm the honest one here, remember. You're the one that constantly lies and puts the blame on other people. Quit being such a whiny little girl.
"I've watched many entire Maher shows. Recently. In fact I've been to a couple. "
Nope, it's pretty clear you haven't watched his show. Ever.
"Chinaski94 is rather fond of the taste of young children. End of story."
Really? That all you got? That's weak even by your standards. I assume young children are always top of mind for somebody like you but keep it to yourself perv.

Lex,
Don't even make me re-post your "top musical acts of the last 15 years" here.
I take it no Sarah Silverman for you, either?

Chinaski94 is rather fond of the taste of young children. End of story.

You're a liar, and a coward. End of story.

Burma,
The next time you say something substantial it will be the first time.
Between the two of you you've resorted to the weakest, most standard of insults.
I'd say I expect more of you, but that'd be a lie.
