At last night's South of the Border party at the Monkey Bar, staged by Peggy Siegal following the premiere of Oliver Stone's doc at Cinema II. I'd seen it twice and written about it two or three times, so I just showed for the schmooze. So did Stone, Mickey Rourke, Fair Game director Doug Liman, Tyson director James Toback, New York Film Festival co-honcho Scott Foundas, and Great Directors helmer Angela Ismailos.

Is Liman really wearing a baseball cap backwards? Does he also wear his pants half way down his ass?

Do I want to see a film directed by a man who wears a backward baseball cap? Does Doug's purse match his outfit?

Not only is it backwards, but it's one of those pull tab mommy caps.
Is Stone trying to look like Pablo Escobar?

Pictures say a thousand words, and I wonder what Jeff reads into the image above of a paunchy, drinky, red-faced Stone. To my mind, it dovetails a little too cleanly with his increasingly flaccid, no-offense-intended filmography. Not just World Trade Center and W, but also Wall Street 2, which I haven't yet seen, but which everyone says is uncritical and far from an indictment of any kind.
Eventually the fire goes out, I guess?

It's hard to believe that the guy that made JFK and Nixon also made W and World Trade Center, especially World Trade Center. That was TV movie-level quality. United 93 is the 9/11 film the old Stone would have made.

Looks like Liman might be angling to direct that big-screen treatment of Gilligan's Island we've heard so much about.

It's pretty fucking sad that Fabio did it better.
It's like every other prom movie, but with the Disney logo!

Can Dr. Strange support a full-length feature?
New gimmick.
I think he needs to apologize for Macgruder, too.

You're telling me that that guy on the left is the same actor who played the young Jim Morrison in The Doors? And was Gordon Gekko's strawberry flinging offspring in Wall Street ("Bonjour monsieur Buddy!")
Hell, I'm so old.

Smart spin from the Stone camp that the film naturally evolved to depict a growing political trend in South American rather than a lone portrait of Chavez. The closer they got to Chavez, the more they likely realized that the right is mostly right about him; he's a dangerous populist blowhard on his way to the darkside at the expense of his country, which is in deep trouble

I would warn anyone seeing this film that Stone refuses to deal with well-documented political and human rights abuses committed by the Chavez and Castro regimes. His basic point, that Latin America has been fucked over for years by the US, IMF, oligarchs and former colonialists, is a valid one. But that doesn't mean he should give a pass to Stalinists like Raoul Castro. It's possible to be a lefty and still criticize the left.

I was very disappointed in Stone's appearance on Bill Maher's show a few weeks ago. He had no sense of humor about anything and just seemed really surly. Not the case in the photo above, it looks like.

It strikes me as a little odd that Stone is doing a whirlwind tour for South of the Border, given that it's only booked for a few states. It's not even scheduled for Portland, Oregon.
And he's going to have to make the rounds again in just two months to start promoting WS2 all over again.

Even though the movie is not bad at all, I have to say that the written is too much better and it has to many details that we didn't watch during the the film.
