Rahm Emanuel said this morning that Rep. Joe Barton's "shakedown" comment wasn't a gaffe. Well, actually it was if you define "gaffe" as something you actually think (and that others like you actually think) but which you're not supposed to say in front of a microphone.

I think that statement contained the kind of fire and thoughtfulness that we expected to hear from Obama last week and never received.

It wasn't out loud, but the $20 billion was a pretty big statement.
As for Barton, he was just reciting GOP talking points:

And this is why Biden was on the ticket in the first place, clearly.

Ray: What I believe has happened with Obama is that he has become overly cautious about speaking out about anything because the Republicans will twist absolutely everything he says, no matter how good intentioned it is to be evil socialist propaganda. Had Obama come out tough against BP from the get go the GOP would have screamed bloody murder about him hating business even more than a few of their members already have been even with his cautious, tempered approach. The GOP has successfully scared Obama into not taking much of a stand on anything and doing everything in half measures even before the GOP comes in and declares said half measures as radically socialist anyways and crippling those initiatives even further.

The comments twisting the other party's words have become ridiculous, from both sides.
