What Price Vampires?

Vampires Suck, one of those silly, blink-of-an-eye distractions that nobody cares or thinks about, is #1 so far with $5 million earned yesterday, a projected $14 to $15 million by Sunday night and a five-day cume of $21 million. Boxoffice's Phil Contrino says "there's no way Vampires Suck will be #1 this weekend. We're estimating $4.24 million yesterday and $12.8 million for the weekend. The Expendables will easily be on top by Sunday."

And yet as we speak Sylvester Stallone's actioner is down 64% from last weekend's opener, and is in second place so far with $4.8 million yesterday. I'm looking at $14.5 million for the weekend and a grand cume of $62.7 million. So...what, it might limp to $80-something million by the end of the run?

The third-place Lottery Ticket, another nothing movie, did about $3.7 million yesterday for an approximate $11 million by Sunday night.

Eat Pray Love, not bad in my book but clearly not igniting with the general populace, is down 57% from last weekend's opener with $3.6 million yesterday, a little more than $11 million for the weekend and a $36 million cume, give or take.

Piranha 3D -- can you imagine actually saying to a friend, "Hey, let's go see Piranha 3D"? -- will come in fifth with 3.6 million yesterday and a possible $10 million for the weekend. The sixth-place Nanny McPhee has sputtered -- $3 million yesterday, maybe $9 million by Sunday night. The Other Guys is down 47% for $2.9 million yesterday, possibly $9.5 by Sunday night -- whoa, it could wind up beating Nanny McPhee and Piranha 3D!

Jennifer Aniston's girly-girl fans didn't come out for The Switch -- $2.8 million yesterday, $8 million for weekend and a #8 slot. But she's loaded and has a great ass (really) and is probably vacationing in Barbados as we speak.

Inception is #9 for a $2.1 million Friday, a $7 million weekend and a grand $261.2 million cume.

The tenth-place Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is an absolute corpse -- $1.5 million yesterday (down 65% from last weekend), $4.5 million for the weekend and a $20.2 million cume.

He still has legions of fans and they don't care if his movie failed.
He's the bud cort/andy kaufman for this generation.

Agreed. There's actually a fairly decent torrent of Suck circulating and has been for a couple of weeks. I would've thought that might have taken something from its opening weekend. Guess not. As for Piranha 3D, it's getting remarkably (shockingly) good reviews and sits somewhere around 80-85% on the Tomatometer. Not the best measure, I'm sure, but maybe there's something to all that gratuitous blood and boobs, perhaps something that's analogous to the last Rambo in terms of excessive over-the-top fun. Just a thought.

Yeah, you might have wanted to check out a couple sources on that Piranha thing (currently ranking 1% higher than even Pilgrim on the RT site) before entirely slagging it off.

I mean, I can understand why you would slag it off, but this is exactly the kind of silly, fun flick 3-D was always meant for, IMHO.

If I could find a 2D theater showing Piranha, I'd be there this weekend. Looking at the cast alone, it's clearly aiming higher than the typical, assembly line horror flick.

I just might see Piranha 3-D after all. 82% at RotTom, cast includes Shue, Rhames, Dreyfuss, Scott, Lloyd...

Can't believe someone let Friedberg/Seltzer make another movie. They're the Uwe Boll of comedy. That's like letting Ben Lyons host another movie-review show.

I see things like Vampires Suck leading the box office and I instantly think of Idiocracy. Prophetic, except that Mike Judge set it too far in the future. How long before we see Ass in theaters to the tune of a $30 million opening weekend?

Side comment: After what this site went through with LexG toning it down, etc., isn't it weird to see a line like "and (Aniston) has a great ass (really)"? I mean, she does ... but I flinched when I saw that.

The very crowded weekend field explains some of the weak boxoffice take. Could the "jig" be up. Has everyone over college-age finally realized that the first-run /DVD release window has narrowed. Same day on-demand is growing month by month. The theatre going experience has become too expensive and unpleasant. The films are unexceptional. The multiplex in my town in suburban NJ no longer features titles on the marquee. The marquee is for a 12 screen theatre and fronts a very active county road. This tells me that the core demographic are teenagers who are getting out of their house despite what might/might not be playing.

I was shocked to see VAMPIRES SUCK do so well. Aren't there already a few dozen of these things on YouTube? I've yet to make it all the way through one of those - and they run maybe five or six minutes. It strikes me as a heavily front-loaded thing and I would not be surprised to see it drop 10-15% from Friday to Saturday.

Saw Piranha 3D last night, but I went by myself, so I didn't have to ask a buddy to go see it with me. Anyway, it was a true exploitation throwback, full of blood, boobs and bloody boobs. Christopher Lloyd has two scenes in the movie playing Basil Exposition, but he just shows you what an old pro can do with even the most hackneyed material. There's a 2 or 3 minute underwater naked lesbian ballet and a 10 minute fish vs. Spring Breaker extravaganza that has to be seen to be believed. Really something for everyone.

Expendables will probably get its biggest haul overseas.

Ulysses: Actually, the ticket sales were boosted by a Wednesday opening. It's still a bomb, though. A cheap bomb, but a bomb nonetheless. So it's a nice pay-back that the Stallone movie beat it after that effing Spartan thing beat Rambo.

But that low Piranha take means Machete is in some serious danger when it opens. I'm not really surprised about The Switch, though. Judging by the trailers, the filmmakers couldn't decide whether or not it was a risque satire or a rom-com.

Ray: "How long before we see Ass in theaters to the tune of a $30 million opening weekend?"

We already have, except it's got a Jack in front of the name. It's ironic, as I remember seeing a banner for the second film in that series as I left an Idiocracy screening.

Yeah, Kelly Brook and Riley Steel essentially performing a 2-3 minute long underwater sex-act on one another, in wide-shot, slow-motion and IN 3D, is probably going to make "Piranha" LEGENDARY pretty shortly - not necessarily "successful," but legendary. That scene, plus the ten minute fish-massacre/speedboat-shredding-through-a-crowd-of-swimmers scene, are going to wind up on a lot of half-ironic "years best"/"best-reasons-for-3D" lists.

yea.
I said kaufman because he represents a sort of rebellious figure..he knows he is weird and nerdy and is fully embracing that to the most extreme..he knows people think of him as a nerd..so he is going to be acting and dressing in the most nerdy/weird way possible.

Yes I can imagine asking a friend to go see Piranha 3D. I did and went last night. Both of us are FILM buffs. I am a film lover. I love all types of films. Even movies. I like a good fun horror movie. This was more of a silly gore fest than a good fun horror movie. Is it good? Shit no. Was I entertained? HELL YES I was. Sometimes a movie can just be fun for fun's sake. And that's what the film is. Worth seeing with your friends without question.
