Is it okay if I bypass Will Gluck's Easy A (Disney, 9.17) and proclaim Emma Stone as the next big thing -- a sassy Michelle Monaghan-resembling actress-comedienne in the Elaine May-Eileen Brennan mold -- on the strength of this trailer? Or do I have to actually go to this afternoon's 4 pm screening and sit through it? Because the trailer makes me feel as if I've pretty much seen it.

That cast is a little insane. I can't even imagine how McDowell fits it.

I guess that depends. Are they going to screw up the adaptation of the trailer?

btw between 'Poker Face' in that and 'All My Friends' in the Greenberg trailer, do these songs not get placed in trailers until enough time has passed that their fans are sick of them but even grandparents in the hinterlands have at least heard them?

Yet another flash in the pan young actress who, in ten years when we see her on cable, we'll say "oh yeah, remember when that chick was semi-famous for ten seconds?"
When was Michelle Monaghan the next big thing? After Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? If I am a young actress the last person I want to be compared to is Monaghan, okay, maybe next to last, the last would be Gretchen Mol.

Thunderballs @4: No young actress wants to be compared to Gretchen Mol, it's true. However, if Stone wants to go full-on nude in some future movie, a la Notorious Bettie Page, I'm all for it.

in space city they screened the american in a theater with perfect sound right down the street ... But EASY A they are screening twice but way the hell out as in adjacent cities that someone in another city looking at a map thinks is near, which kind of tells you what you need to know about seeing it

I admit to a crush on Stone, I've liked her since Superbad and Zombieland.
Alas, there's no way I'm seeing this movie.
Wish she'd go for an, ummm, stint on Californication, ala Eva Amurri. THAT would make me happy.

Love Emma Stone and think that Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson are inspired casting choices as Stone's parents. But I'll have to second Jeff's seen-it-all-in-the-trailer comment. EASY A looks like a mediocre, have-it-every-possible-way sitcom.

Saw it last night and was stunned at how funny and clever it is; the trailer doesn't convey this at all. And Clarkson and Tucci as Emma's folks are the funniest parents I've seen in ages. (Props too to Thomas Haden Church as a fearsomely hip English teacher.) Frankly, it's probably too good for its target audience, which prefers imbecilic comedies about malletheads and bodily functions.

No, sorry, I was only looking for Jersey Shore...
On a slightly more serious (un-spam-related note), I would probably have skipped "Easy A," too, but I am hearing pretty good buzz. And the fact it's in the Toronto line-up means it must have something to offer.

When I see Emma Stone, I'm reminded somehow of the younger Jodie Foster. Maybe someone could do a spec script about Clarice Starling as a trainee agent and pitch it to Emma's agents/managers.

It seems like it might be good. I mean the casting is amazing and expansive (I haven't seen that many big names on a poster since... well The Expendables). But Stone is still on the fence of being a famous actress. Right now, she's stuck in genre films like Superbad, Zombieland and this. If she hopes to ever get really famous, she needs to pull an Ellen Page and do big-budget action films.

Emma Stone and Penn Badgley are the oldest high schoolers since Luke Perry and Jason Priestley.
I honestly don't get the Stone appeal. She's got this raspy voice and isn't all that attractive.

Good thing Inception didn't bomb, or Page would have been the reason for its downfall, right "Kakihara?" She was a big enough star in your eyes to shoulder that blame, but not big enough to benefit from its popularity.
How do you know she was barely in it when we all know you never actually saw the movie?

Absinth: I did see the movie, 'cus I needed to know how much Nolan ripped off from Paprika. And if Page was so big on her own, then that thing she did with Drew would be a mini-hit. Anyway, if she did end up being a bigger part of the film, hell yes it would have tanked.
