Noisy Brutes

The big surprise in Laura Israel's Windfall, a doc that I saw just before the Toronto Film Festival, is that wind-turbines, the "green" energy source that everyone is in favor of, are oppressors -- bringers of discomfort and anguish and headaches and lawsuits. They're 400 feet tall these days and weigh hundreds of tons and look like huge white Martian invaders out of Spielberg's War of the Worlds, and they have a proven history of making the lives of people who live near them miserable.

(l.) Windfall director Laura Israel, (r.) cartoonist-activist Lynda Barry

Last night, I'm told, the film played to a sold-out house at the IFC Center. During the q & a Israel and cartoonist Lynda Barry discussed the ravaging and plundering of economically hard-up communiities by the wind turbine industry.

Barry is writing a book about how wind turbines invaded the small burgh where she lives in Wisconsin. She's already interviewed more than 20 families and has done some initial drawings that have appeared on her website. She also runs the anti-wind turbine development website below.

That's why you build them offshore, which is better for a lot of other reasons as well; Google just invested billions in this: http://tiny.cc/fs3uo

There's so much debate going on right now on MA Governor Duval's pet project for these in Nantucket Sound - like most, I believe, I thought only the wealthy who were worried about their ocean views were against, but now I understand they can hurt the environment - whale routes, etc., - not to mention aviation routes, fishing areas, etc. To top it all off, if they go in, half the state will end up paying higher electrical rates.

Wells, you seem to pretty much educate yourself via documentaries and MSNBC. Explains quite a bit.

What dumb hens. The only complaints about windmills are aesthetic. Freakin yuppies.

natural gas & nuclear power is the way to go. Not to mention retrofit existing to improve their energy consumption.

Nap, were you also a big supporter of Bush's (sic) Clean Skies Initiative?

The reason why no new nuclear power plants have been built in many years is because no one wants them in their town or neighborhood. People don't trust the corporations who would build these things because they simply can't be trusted.

And nautral gas? There's a great documentary out right now about the Natural Gas Industry. Nautral gas exploration has decimated hundreds of communities around the country.

So, these people are mad that they didn't realize that a rather tall tower made of metal would be ugly/loud? And the only reason we shouldn't put them up in a relatively secluded area is because they are ugly and loud?

hahahaha, Nuclear power? Are you serious? That shit is insanely dangerous and wasteful, and will never not be. There is no safe nuclear power, and the odds of there ever being such a thing within any of our lifetimes is rather low.

So what they are saying is "not in my backyard." You can't oppose something unless you can propose a reasonable alternative. If windmills are not the green energy solution, than what is?

Anyone who thinks these inefficient monsters should be placed in people's backyards has not had to deal with them yet. They cause numerous health complaints, devalue hectares of rural land and simply do not produce what the wind companies say. Very costly, rarely producing more than 22% of their rated output, and need to be backed up 100% by alternate forms of power, ie gas, hydro, coal or nuclear. The only people that benefit are the investors.

The problem is that "GREEN" energy is not always correctly labelled and understood. The CO2 frenzy is triggering very reactive, panic driven, poor policy decisions in the governance. Since wind energy is reliant on the variance of wind being present, a backup system is required. That back up system is usually natural gas powered steam turbine power plants to maintain consistent power. So lets think about it,,, to reduce CO2 producing electrical utilities, you are building Wind Turbines which in turn are supported by CO2 producing natural gas driven steam turbine electrical power plants for when the wind does not BLOW. These Natural Gas plants boil water 24 hours a day 7 days a week to keep the water boiling to make steam, to make electricity, just in case. In a nut shell, large industrial wind turbine power is expensive, intrusive, unreliable, with NO net benefit to reduce CO2. In Europe, governments there are starting to see the error in their way. Britain just completed a study of their wind turbine assets, showing the output is only 17% efficient. Britain is now wondering why have they destroyed their beautiful countryside with little to no CO2 offset. The Spanish have concluded that for every wind job they created through subsidies, they lost 2.2 jobs. Germany is building 25 more coal fired stations because wind is proving to be unreliable. The only thing green about wind power is the green you pay for increased electricity and increased taxes for subsidies your government is paying the Wind companies . Wind is NOT AN ALTERNATIVE. It is a supplement to existing generation. The problem is that the geneators produce electricity more often when demand is low than when people actually would use it. New conventional power plants will be built to replace the older ones with or without wind. And for Pete's sake we don't . . . . depend on . . . . .oil . . . . for electricity!!!!

MechanicalShark, way to be a kneejerk reactionary. That's second hand ignorance handed down from your granola bar parents. Please kindly name me all the major nuclear accidents in the past 40 years, and then notice you can practically count them on your hand. Then please investigate how much France, that bastion of irresponsible paleo-energy, uses nuclear power. Then please add up deaths related to coal-ming around the world every year. Then please RESEARCH SOME SHIT.

Those who say wind opponents need to offer another alternative mistakenly believe wind energy is an alternative to fossil fuels. However, there is no evidence that a meaningful amount of emissions from fossil fuel power plants is displaced by wind energy. In addition to the film, see a recent article titled "Inconvenient Truths About Wind Energy," http://www.garyabraham.com/files/wind/WIND_ENERGY.NY_Zoning_and_Planning_Law_Rep4.pdf --Even less can wind energy reduce our dependence of foreign oil, because we generally don't burn oil for electricity in the U.S. If there so few benefits of industrial wind energy, government should start looking at the serious negative effects on the large land areas such projects require.
