Jay Roach will direct a dramatic adaptation of Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's best-seller about the '08 election, for HBO. Which means he'll be casting actors to portray Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, John McCain, Sarah Palin, John Edwards, Elizabeth Edwards and Reille Hunter. Question: If you were Roach would you reach out to Tina Fey to play Palin in a realistic, non-comedic, non-caricature vein, or would you start fresh with someone else?

I wonder if this will affect Aaron Sorkin's movie about Edwards and Hunter? I'm looking forward to seeing what Sorkin does with that. My guess is those characters will not play that big a role in Roach's HBO project. I don't think Tina Fey would even agree to play Palin again except on SNL.

Gotta be someone new. I remember when they cast Rich Little to play Johnny Carson in The Late Shift. It came off as exactly what it was - a broad impersonation. If they had gone with someone like Kevin Spacey, they would've actually had an interesting character portrayal.
Fey is a terrific actress, but her Palin is a sketch, not a person. (It could be argued that so is the real one, but I digress.)

Having just experienced Dinner For Schmucks - easily one of the worst "comedies" ever made - the idea of seeing another Roach movie makes me physically ill. Too soon.

Answer. Of course not. Hiring Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, would be a huge mistake. It make it difficult to take the film seriously. Genuine sincerity would be thrownout the window. I adore Tina Fey. I think she's a brilliant writer and comedienne and what she does, she does very well. But a legit actor she's not.
You hire Julia Roberts. In truth, I'm normally not a fan of the Roberts' acting but she would bring a realistic albeit nauseating appeal to the character grounded in reality. And of course she very beautiful.
By the By. I would love to see a fatten up Jodie Foster play Hillary Clinton. I think she'd kill it.
And, just cause, Megan Mullally as Elizabeth Edwards and Jason Patric as John Edwards.

Bring back Hope Davis as Hillary. Harry Lennix as Obama. Julianne Moore as Palin. Regina King as Michelle. Mccain would be the hardest to cast. Powers Boothe? John Lithgow? Dan Aykroyd (if he lost weight)?

No Fey. I doubt she would do it anyway. Not that it matters. This film will be horrendous.

Albert Finney was born the same year as McCain... he gets my vote. Agreed that Obama can ONLY be played by Harry Lennix. Love the idea of Roberts as Palin. And Hope Davis can have Hillary as long as she wants it.
What I'd really like to see is a film about the relationship between Obama and Hillary. There's a real story to tell there. From the election up to now, the dynamic between these two political forces of nature is really fascinating to me. Almost romantic. Sorkin would tear that shit up.

Carrie Fisher would be an awesome Elizabeth Edwards--she could nail that kind of mixture of anger and bemusement EE showed in all of the post-affair interviews.

This reminds me a lot of when the South Park guys got Timothy Bottoms to play a parody of George W. Bush in That's My Bush! And then Bottoms went on to play a serious Dubya in a Showtime movie. He actually pulled it off, but that was in the years immediately following 9/11 when irony was dead. Here's an amusing recap of the film.

Tad, Bottoms looked a lot like Bush, but he sounds nothing like him. And the guy they got for Colin Powell, lol, "Oh any black guy with gray hair will do."
It's amusing how many of the actors from that one went on to play the villains in 24.

@coxcable,
If they keep the same basic arc(s) from the book, that's pretty-much the movie they'll be making: The narrative treats it as innevitable that ANY Democrat was going to win after Dubya, so the big central conflict is really Clinton and Obama jockeying for who gets to be sitting in the Big Chair when it happen. The "game change" they're talking about is the idea of the Obama youth/web machine knocking old the older-style Clinton aparatus.
The McCain campaign is played mostly as a kind of tragic sideshow whose main role is enabling Palin to show up as a "the dragon" in Act III so the frenemies have something to unite against.

Harry Lennix definitely has to play Obama. Great actor and he looks like him(enough for HBO, anyway). Lennix's even from Chicago.
Nora Dunn as Palin.
Agree with Hope Davis returning as Hillary.
McCain IS tough... Sam Rockwell in old age makeup and a baldcap?

I'm against casting anyone to play a real person in which we already know the actor thinks the person is an idiot. Cast some eye-candy milf who we know little about personally...i.e., Courtney Thorne Smith.

Didn't anybody watch Battlestar Galactica? The guy to play McCain was there all along, Michael Hogan.
Me, I'd cast John Malkovich as all of them. That would be trippy. Otherwise, Christ, is there an audience for this? How hollow will those big Obama speeches sound in the movie? "This is the moment the planet begins to heal..." Fuck me.
