More mythical-fantasy CG crap in the mold of Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans, and directed by Tarsem Singh. The bare-chested guy yelling "noooo!" at the beginning is Henry Cavill, the star of Zac Snyder's Man of Steel. The moustachioed guy in the cattle-horn helmet (i.e., "King Hyperion") is Mickey Rourke. And poor Freida Pinto (triple-devalued between You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, Miral and this thing) costars as Phaedra.

I was never a big Tarsem fan, but at least he had the conviction to create his own visual style. This thing looks like Julie Taymor threw up in Zack Snyder's editing room. Speaking of which, Cavill's Harry Hamlin impression sure doesn't bode well for Superman.

Aw yeeeeah, gimme a YEP YEP and a LOOK AT HER and a THIS LOOKS AWESOME AS ALL HELL.
Seriously, though, yes, I know it's the Jeff Wells War On Popcorn Munchers Because Social Network Lost Best Picture, but...
Tarsem is like DAVID FINCHER'S BEST FRIEND, Fincher PRODUCED THE FALL, and Tarsem has THE most singular, sinister and DISGUSTINGLY, TERRIFIYINGLY EVIL VISUAL STYLE EVER PUT TO FILM. I don't know how you can write off a new Tarsem film even if it's this 300 cash-in, even if it's Snow White that he's gonna make, because his "look" is just so garish and insane and disturbing and ugly and sinister.
Granted, he steals half his imagery from Matthew Barney, but a Cremaster Version of 300 doesn't sound like typical mouth-breathing CG crap.
Though I'm wondering how Ebert is going to reconcile his Tarsem Worship (an automatic Four Stars every time) with his new disdain for any kind of proto-fascist ass-kicking aggression. How can he give this the auto-rave when it's all violent? We shall see

Freida Pinto, is terrific, as is the rest of the exemplary cast of "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger," one of the Woodman's best films and certainly a Top Five film of his last 20 years, perhaps even the best of that period.

I was thinking the same thing as JLC: I can't believe this is Tarsem. It looks like a cheap 300 rip-off (not so much like Clash of the Titans, Jeff).
It also goes to show - as if it needs to be proven - just how Peter Jackson nailed Lord of the Rings in a way all these post- LOTR CGI-fests have utterly failed to do.
All the computers in the world can't create a sword-and-sandals epic out of thin air.
300 was the only thing to even approximate something decent and that's largely because of how uniquely stylized it was. In the meantime we've had to put with Troy, Alexanders and other weird things involving dragons and/or shirtless men.
This looks like video game footage on which someone spilled a bottle of Aunt Jemima.

You guys are NUTS.
It is in TOTAL TARSEM VISION. Garish weaponry, shiny gold, sinister wallpaper, scorching reds, unpleasant angles, hermetic sheen.
TARSEM. If you don't like this trailer, you are INSULTING DAVID FINCHER who PRESENTS TARSEM to the world.

1. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger was weak even by Woody standards but I liked it more than Anything Else or Whatever Works.
2. This trailer only started to lose me when Cavill began his rally-the-troops speech. We really don't need any more of those. Maybe that's because I keep hearing clips of Colin Farrell's weak speech from Alexander any time I flip to On Demand. (Just have him do the St. Crispin's Day speech and be done with it.)
3. This has definite Tarsem roots to it, but yeah, really, there's no moment in there that tells me it'll be any better than 300 or Troy or Clash of the Titans. Tough sell.

Uh, the best thing about Farrell in ALEXANDER (which is very underrated) is he keeps giving these speeches and NO ONE gives a shit. It's sort of genius, he's doing all these big rally-troops deals, and the troops are all grumbling and bored and calling him a douche. AWESOME.
And EXACTLY what real life would be like. If I was in some BATTLE and some grandstanding jerkoff starting giving one of those speechers, I'd be lobbing fucking produce like Mr Majestyk and telling that hambone glory hound William Wallace to get the fuck off the stage.

While the trailer on it's own would normally give me some cause for concern, by and large I'm with LexG on this one. It's Tarsem Singh, so at the very least it's going to be visually arresting. If I wasn't familiar with his previous work, the trailer would just make me shrug, and I'd forget about it as soon as it was over.

I'll be glad when it's 2013, so we don't have any more of this 05/05/05, 6/6/6, 07/07/07, 08/08/08, 9/9/9, 10/10/10, 11/11/11 and 12/12/12 scheduling bullshit for the rest of our lifetime (unless some asshole think opening a movie on a Tuesday so they can have a 11/12/13 on their poster will be tits).
As for Tarsem... bleh.

Normally, I'd be okay with this - I'm a 19 year old nerd who lives vicariously through video games and movies, but I'm not okay with this.
This looks like the version of 300 Asylum would produce with more than their usual $500,000 budget. I mean, look at that "rock" that the bow was in; I'd rather have some CGI rocks than have one designed by high school students. There's just so much of this movie that looks like complete shit. I don't care who's "disgustingly, terrifyingly evil visual style" is behind it. There's nothing about this film that looks even remotely okay.
The only scene I would watch is the slo-mo fighting in the air. That looked insanely stylized and cool. But I'm sure it's a clip from a flash back or a story, and it'll only be about 10 seconds long. Oh, and YEP YEP goes to Freida Pinto.
People write off Snyder as some shitty director, but nothing was (or still is) as good as 300. Especially compared to this trite bullshit.

Jeff, did you fucking SEE Tarsem Singh's previous films?
If you had, you'd never say that anything he did is in the mold of anything Louis Leterrier did. It's like saying 2001 is in the mold of Lost in Space. There are about three genuine visual visionaries working today and Tarsem is at least two of them. The Cell and The Fall, the most underappreciated, unjustly mocked masterpieces this side of The Fountain.
