I don't feel that she comes off well in this interview. How do I put this....there's an ungenerous undercurrent. No solidarity with Lars whatsoever. She's like "Whew, good thing I still got my award! Fuck him!"
I'm not saying she was obliged to defend him, but there are ways of slipping in words of veiled support or understanding, etc. Her vibe is that she can barely stand him, even though he's largely responsible for her getting the award.
I agree with Ryan. Kirsten was really rude considering that without Lars she wouldn't have won the award nor even been there. On the other hand I understand that she's pissed. Lars with his behaviour denied the movie a possible Cannes win and win or no win hurt the movie's commercial prospects with the negative publicity.
I wonder what's up with Kirsten weight gain. Was it for the role or just a natural development. In any case it makes her look really different and obviously a lot older.
What a bunch of creeps. So according to you guys there is some kind of an "artist's code" that says she is awful because she isn't being supportive of an idiot who spews nonsense about Hitler? Are there any limits? Is there anything he could have said that she shouldn't have been supportive of? Anything????
Dunst is so awesome, but she's never been the swiftest speaking off the cuff in interviews. Great actress, kind of prone to saying stupid shit-- like the time she got up to accept a movie award and started dissing Jennifer Garner's movie for "biting" her big scene, or when she was on Letterman promoting "Dick" and kept talking about how cute she is and how that should sell tickets...
Or the time she was on teen Jeopardy and didn't know the answer when it was "Interview with a Vampire"... a movie she starred in.
I like Dunst. Used to love her back in my teenage years when she was in such classics as Get Over It and Bring It On. Then went off her during the dozy-eyed Spider-Man phase, but recently she is looking pretty good.
To me, this short interview indicates that 1) Kirsten Dunst has the ability to reason and is gifted with enough common sense to specifically distance herself from this embarrassing episode, and 2) has come to the same conclusion that all rational people have: Lars von Trier is a grade-A, bone-deep, spit-shined asshole.
Amazing how some people support Von Trier's right to free expression but not Dunst's.

Perfect.
I see nothing wrong with distancing yourself and never again speaking with an anti-semite who claimed to be a Hitler sympathizer.
And what's all the revisionism that he was "joking".
Bullshit.

Littlebigman, if you actually watched the clip, and came to those conclusions, then you lack even a modicum of intelligence. He was OBVIOUSLY joking. He even says at one point, "No, that's another joke." You are so bad at reading things, I'm surprised you can even cross the street successfully.

Tristan-
Hahahahaha. Quite the jokester, that Lars. Hahahahahaha.
Hitlers. Nazis. I sympathize with Hitler. Hahahahahahahaha,
Not to mention, that line about being a proud Jew until he met Susanne Bier is actually a TOP NOTCH joke.
Also if you read what he said, it's BEYOND obvious he was doing a riff. A riff that Sarah Silverman could've delivered and NO ONE would have given it a second thought as shtick.
That's a pretty persuasive argument. I guess you're probably right - he's a Jew-hating, Hitler-worshiping creep, who figured, what the hell, confessing that to world might be good for a round of applause at Cannes. Nobody EVER uses Hitler for comedic purposes - that point comes quite strongly in the Downfall parody of this incident.

Good gravy Tristan, nobody is saying it was quality humour, or that it wasn't tasteless and ill considered.
But if you can't see it WAS misplaced humour, you're blinkered by baggage. The man was riffing off the cuff at a press conference and his ego outweighed his comedic talent.
And as others have said, I've seen stronger riffs on US tv......albeit cable shows.

Kirsten's father is German, so Lars' comments were probably extra fun for her and her family.
And watch the original clip again. He's borderline joking ... the dig at Israel? Not a joke (more truthful, actually). And he turned was should have been a great and memorable occasion for his two leading ladies into a disaster. They were dying up there. I'd be pissed at him for a long time.
If Von Trier actually made a porno with Dunst all would be forgiven.

She deserves to have won this award. It's been a long time coming but finally she's won something good. I can't understand why what Lars Von Trier said should have anything to do with Kirsten or her chance at any award. I bet she was angry she was even near him during that mad speech.size-genetics
