Well, that was fast! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has accepted Brett Ratner's decision to resign as producer of the 2012 Oscar telecast. He probably would have survived "rehearsing is for fags" but talking about cunnilingus with Howard Stern yesterday morning did him in. Will Eddie Murphy decline to serve as host in solidarity with Rats, or will he stick? That's the question.
Ratner's statement: "As a first step, I called Tom Sherak this morning and resigned as a producer of the 84th Academy Awards telecast. Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career. But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents."
Academy president Tom Sherak's statement: "[Ratner] did the right thing for the Academy and for himself. Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."

Since Ratner resigned on his own, what would Murphy be implying, by standing united and resigning "in solidarity"?
Wouldn't solidarity mean, "Yeah, I need to resign too, because I'm with Brett: rehearsing IS for fags."
Might happen, but if it does that's exactly what it would signify.

You know Ratner called Murphy screaming about how the overly-sensitive Fag Mafia ruined their party.
I highly doubt a lesson was actually learned here.
I wonder if they ever considered asking Apatow, and If he would even take the job. You'd get Rogen, Hill, Rudd, Leslie Mann, et al to share the stage, and even bring back Franco in a cameo to make fun of last year's mess.

I'd hire Quentin Tarantino to produce and Dave Chappelle to host. In QT, you get a guy who's a genuine film geek, and well respected in Hollywood. In Chappelle you have a comedian who will bring in young viewers, and has actually been funny in the past 10 years.

Underperforming Tower Heist did few favors for Murphy. The Oscars -- and maybe a SNL hosting gig -- will be his comeback vehicle by default. Why should he stand by Ratner and his idiot comments? It's not like he owes his career to him, like Chris Tucker or something.

I like Brett Ratner. He's a actually a good guy, based on the few interactions I've had with him over the last 10 years or so, and I believe in my heart of hearts, he's not a homophobe. He's just a guy who tries too hard to be cool, funny, and hip. He wants more than anything to be liked. So he brags about his sexual conquests, and his Hollywood connections, and how much money his movies have made, and I guess talk like that rubs people the wrong way.
That having been said, I haven't seen someone implode like this since Charlie Sheen did it earlier this week. WTF was he thinking?
I hope he's able to land back on his feet and move on from this. If a piece of shit like Roman Polanski or Woody Allen can get a second chance so should he.

@reverent and free: good call on Norman Lloyd. I had the honor to sit next to him at a private dinner party about 10 years ago and he was pretty damned charming.
Not only did he work with Welles, but also Chaplin, Renoir and Hitchcock in the 40's, all the way up to Scorsese and a guest spot on Star Trek TNG in the 90's.
A long and amazing career.

@Abbey,
That's just it, though - he's not really "getting it" for using the-other-F-word; he's "getting it" for BEING Brett Ratner, shitty hack director and embarassing tabloid staple. This particular blowup was just the long-time-coming unignorable "last straw" for shaking him off like a bad flea.
Good riddance. He'll deserve every "rehearsal joke" made at the actual show - in fact, making THIS a news story has probably done more to make Oscar relevant again than Ratner ever could've done as producer.
So... the BIG question now becomes who replaces him. Lemme throw one out: Bill Condon.
Well liked in the industry, former nominee/winner, did musicals so he knows his way around production numbers, broadway connections for extra stage talent, he'll be coming off a HUGE hit with the "Twilight" movie and - oh yeah - openly gay, which can't hurt the recovery-from-Ratner-debacle angle.

What is over the top about a livid reaction to hate speech? let me guess, you are a Caucasian male of Anglo descent. Some of you white males simply refuse to understand the damaging effect of hate language because guess what? for thousands of centuries you have bought into the bullshit that you are the barometer, the measuring rod and everything is measured against your towering stature. Then again cultural or orientation sensitivity is something some people will simply never understand

I think what many white anglo's feel excessive is that the once funniest line in Old School, "I recommend you stop being such a faggot!" is now considered hate speech if you say similar in an unfilmed q&a. Complete loss of a once favorite ball-busting word, reserved for your closest friend when they refuse to jump off the high dive, over such a short period of time is a lot to adjust to.

That doesn't fit the IMPERIALIST WHITE MAN meme that liberals are comfortable with, but, yeah, ask any gay black or Latino man or woman how much more OPEN MINDED their parents or uncles or buddies were about their coming out than their white counterparts would be, where it's just a regular Fred Phelps Meeting every day in White Man Land.
