I always ignore these Hollywood Reporter talkathons because they post them so long after-the-fact. You have to post material quickly on the web. But this is interesting. Gary Oldman, George Clooney, Albert Brooks, Christopher Plummer, Christoph Waltz, Nick Nolte. Originally posted on 12.5.
Best bit: Plummer's recollections about making The Sound of Music. Second best: His admission that he only began to have fun playing characters in film when he reached his drunk stage in his 40s (i.e., The Man Who Would Be King ). Second best: Clooney saying "we're all on this journey [but] it's how you handle the down parts [that counts]." Third best: Brooks saying that "the star thing means nothing top you in your soul, Your soul doesn't go, 'Oh, you're a star!' Your demons are your demons." Fourth best: Nolte saying "I've lived with death lately...after 70, you don't think about sex much." Fifth best: Charles Manson was called "Chuck."

I feel sorry for black (and latino) actors, they're never invited to the roundtable discussions.

in his DP 30 interview Nolte said "You know how when you're young you think of sex every 4 seconds; when you're 70 you think of death every four seconds."

Great Roundtable...even though I agree with Chicago48 (hell will we ever seen any Asian actors)....but Nick Nolte is awesome even with all his demons. Check out the GQ story on him: http://www.gq.com/entertainment/celebrities/201201/nick-nolte-profile-chris-heath-gq-january-2012

Brooks can taste that Oscar nod. I've seen him interviewed everywhere but My Weekly Reader. He is this Oscar seasons Sally Kirkland as ANA.

Just watched it, and am amazed at how coherent Nolte is - I guess I thought he had gone around the bend years ago, but can see he still has it together.

Other than no minorities, the discussion was more compelling than usual for having a roundtable of seasoned veterans (Clooney is the youngest at 50).
I was impressed by Oldman. He came across as the most modest and down to Earth of the bunch.

I watched about 15 min. Will go back and finish it. Excellent.
Sally Kirkland's career sure went south after her nomination. Very interesting lady, but was into a weird religious group, MSIA.

I bet Jean Dujardin wins best actor. Pitt and Clooney will cancel each other out, or voters will have trouble deciding between the two and decide to just go with The Artist guy.
BTW, I was totally surprised by how much I liked The Artist... mainly because I let Jeff poison my mind.

Add on to fourth best: Plummer interrupting Nolte's grumbling about being 70 with "Wait till you're 80."

I watched this for a moment, sort of lost interest, then got interested again when I noticed that Christoph Waltz had not uttered ONE. SINGLE. WORD. He just sits there, hands folded in front of him, as if trying to hide. Finally the interviewer asks him a direct question at the 14:30 mark. He might have gone the distance had he not been spoken to.

The craziest thing is that Nick Nolte is only 5'11"yet he towers over all of them as if he was Andre the Giant.
I also wonder why Gary didn't have the same concern and respect for Nancy Laura Spungen's family.

Filmsofdusts - a cheap shot at Oldman and classic false equivalence.
If you really wonder how Oldman's decision impacted on the family, why not read one of the many well paid interviews the family gave to British newspapers or perhaps buy the highly profitable Nancy Spungen memoir written by her grief stricken mom soon after her death.
Comparing Oldmans decision not to portray Manson with his role as Sid Vicious is off kilter.

What a difference 13 years can make. Nolte has gone to shit since the Thin Red Line. Must have been all that GHB.

Looks like filmsofdusts received a lump of coal in his stocking this Christmas.
I like how Jeff always complains about someone posting something "so long after the fact," when in fact it's often him that's the guilty party in this respect (this has been floating around for more than 3 weeks!).

Terrific roundtable. So much more informative and comfortably conversational than the producers roundtable or the writers roundtable (with Almodovar rambling on endlessly in hard-to-understand English, more from a director's perspective than a writer's). Wish they'd put the others online in their entirety.
It's great that they're all older guys--a huge wealth and depth of experience in that room. Plummer and Oldman really come across as ultra-sharp. Brooks and Clooney (surprisingly) come off as truly pretty down to earth. Waltz seems intellectual and semi-amazed that he gets to be in the room after decades of anonymity. And Nolte (awesome growly voice) just seems like a beast that's been to town and back.
