I really must have three forthcoming Masters of Cinema Blurays -- Lifeboat, Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend -- to have and hold. British and region-locked, of course. Which means I'm finally thinking about getting a Momitsu 799 or 899 multiregion player. Recommendations?

It's weird to me how the UK is a different region, but Japan is Region A like North America.

UK isn't a region by itself for blu-ray you ignoramus, It's part of region B which encompasses all of Europe, Africa, S-America and the middle-east.
And Jeff...go for a region modded Oppo, far and away the best player on the market.

Nice posted article you've wrote. The classic films was seem really interesting to watch even as already considered as classic films.

Question: Does an all-region Blu-Ray player also play all-region standard DVDs? (Not a joke; I'm a blockhead on this subject.)

They're also releasing an Alex Cox approved Blu of Repo Man in February - complete with the extended and unintentionally hilarious TV cut (lots of 'melon farmer' audio dubs).

I'm glad to see you finally deciding on a multi-region player, Jeffrey. My recommendation for the Oppo models still goes, and as you can see I'm not alone on this. I think the Momitsu players are fine, and I believe dvdbeaver.com have embraced them for while, but I'd still go for Oppo. Either way you're on you way to multiregion bliss - you won't regret it!

Oh, and btw: the by ThriceDamned recommended Oppo BDP-93 would be my choice as well(but if one were to be an audiophile as well I'd go with the BDP-95...).

$629 for a multi-region player? Fucking hell. Wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy a cheap Blu-ray player from Europe and just run two of them? Kind of annoying but it'd save a fuck load of money.

Here is Monte Hellman's answer to your question, via Twitter:
Hardware modified Oppo 93 (or 95 for audiophile sound) is best code/region-free player in the world http://www.world-import.com/oppo-bdp93-region-code-free-dvd-player-and-region-free-a-b-c-bluray-player.html
Seems like lots of folks already told you this, so Monte's one more vote for Oppo.

FWIW, Double Indemnity is expected to hit US Blu-Ray in September of this year. That said, there's no doubt that the MoC version will be considerably better, since the US one will be coming from Universal.

I threw in my new MoC "Touch of Evil" the other night, which has a humorous "We hoped you wouldn't see this!" screen if you put it in a non-region B player. Fortunately, I can flick a switch on my HTPC software and I now have a region B player.

I can tell by this string that Jeff's readers may be the ONLY FOLKS on the planet who understand WHY I'm so excited that Masters of Cinema is releasing Monte Hellman's ROAD TO NOWHERE in the UK.
MoC have bravely ignored the troglodyte army of Anglo cinemies of the film who first began banging their knuckles on the cave floor against the film in Venice and they are listening, I assume, to the US, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Brazilian, Argentinian and now Japanese lovers of the film who say it's at best another Hellman masterpiece and at worst a provocative, elegantly crafted experiment in blowing up everything we assume US indies films are STILL supposed to be, even in this newish century.
MoC have done a wonderful job just in the past few weeks with the TWO LANE BLACKTOP BluRay, so I can only assume their courage, love and cineaste care will be applied to our little film and I'm honored beyond words to have them represent us in my old homeland.
To have this opening in theaters in the UK and the possibilty of Bill Wyman back on bass in Keef's band means the Olympics will just be a small British sideshow in this, our Year of Mayan Apocalypse.

The $499 Amazon price is for an unmodified, region locked unit.
And the $630 price is not extravagant when you take into account that this is very literally close to being the best player money can buy on the market today, and that it'll serve for many years as both a region free blu-ray player and a region free DVD up-scaling player.

I don't see the need to own DVDs. I have a few, but I would prefer a nice digital download to having extra "stuff" around the house. The only DVD I'm even remotely interested in buying is Rango.

I had a Toshiba DVD player that you could crack to play all regions (a couple of buttons on the remote). Do new players not have this?
