A brief portion of Josh Radnor's q & a after Sunday's 3:15 pm screening of Liberal Arts, which many (myself included) are calling a mature and significant uptick from Radnor's last film, happythankyoumoreplease.

I had wondered why most of the other HIMYM actors had gotten significant career bumps from the show (Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, NPH), but that its nominal "star" hadn't. Good to see him out forging his own path.

The star of an ensemble often has trouble breaking out because they are often stuck playing the 'straight man' while his/her more colorful co-stars get the best lines and the press attention. Cobie Smulders didn't exactly break out either, as her supporting role (extended cameo?) in The Avengers is her first significant project since HIMYM started back in fall 2005 (she is the lead in a 2011 movie called Grassroots which I know nothing about...). Hannigan was already a known entity due to Buffy and American Pie, while NPH used the show as phase two of his comeback (following his self-depreciating cameo in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle). The big success story of the show is obviously Jason Segel, who was a general non-entity (unless you happened to see the two short-lived shows he participated in prior to HIMYM) and can now pretty much write his own ticket and create his own projects with studio backing.

Cobie Smulders is being punished by the universe for being a 10 and yet shacking up with (admittedly funny) douche Tarran Killam. It's the Megan Fox Rule (even though Brian Austin Green is a god).

Segel's connection to Apatow is way more important than a somewhat popular sitcom. That's what lead to his memorable supporting turn in Knocked Up, which lead to his writing and starring in Sarah Marshall, which is what got him the Muppets. HIMYM is really just the steady paycheck.

Segal sticking around on MOTHER is one of the more mystifying things going... He's a star of MAJOR MOVIES, and still clocks in every weekday for this CBS shitcom... I'm sure it pays well, but WHY?
There used to be this big and important chasm between TV actors and movie actors. Now, thanks to FUNNY OR DIE and the comedic Hack Pack-- Wiig, Galafiniakis, Hamm, Schwartzman, Maya Rudolph, Aubrey Plaza, etc-- there's this weird shit where people who MAKE MOVIES waste their time dicking around in TV comedy. Why would ANYONE do TV if they're in movies? TV is dogshit.

In theory, I should be watching that sitcom (Doogie & Segal are great), but Radnor's so freaking annoying & unlikable, I can't.
Anyone read this? Interesting insight in trying to land a sitcom gig. Wonder how Radnor pulled it off :

PS: LEX: Segal signed a tv contract for 7 years. Tricky to get out of it.

It's not just sitcoms, Lex. I'm just getting to Boardwalk Empire, and that show has a gigantic cast of people who could be doing 3 or 4 films a year but instead are doing 10/12 hour-long episodes as the same character, with maybe 1 on hiatus. The paradigm is changing in a really interesting way.
