Let no one accuse Hollywood Elsewhere of not standing by its opinions despite financial consequences. My anti-Artist jihad has apparently resulted in a lack of Phase Two ads from the Weinstein guys. Many thousands down the drain. But it's fair game and totally their call. I hear what they're saying, and no worries. For what it's worth an ad on HE doesn't mean I follow suit with obsequious endorsement. It just means that the Oscar conversation is happening on this site and...you know, whatever, have at it. I know that Artist ads are currently on The Wrap, Deadline, Hitfix and L.A. Times. C'est la guerre.

Since you bring it up, and I'm sure many that read the site are curious, would you be willing to share what a single ad campaign nets HE per month? For example what did the page ringing strip of THE DESCENDANTS ads bring in Jan 2012?
I'm just really curious how ad supported blogs stay afloat considering the tiny click-through rate of the ads. But in the case of movies, its not so much will I go to the site and buy the Coke, but rather will I be bombarded with the images of the movie so much I remember to see it when I stand slackjawed at the ticket counter on a Saturday night.

Were you ever explicitly threatened with an ad embargo if you didn't stop campaigning against The Artist?

Doesn't Sony want to advertise on your site, what with you fellating 'Moneyball' every chance you get? Seems like a no-brainer. And don't get me wrong, I thought it was terrific too, but the ads are now a bit 'Decendants'-heavy, obviously.

Didn't there used to be a quote on the HE banner from Harvey saying that he likes and respects you even if he doesn't always agree with you?

Ah, c'est la vie. If Jeff suddenly did a turnaround on "The Artist", we addicted Hollywood Elsewhere fans would have reason to worry.
I used to have a copy of a 1960 vintage book by former Time magazine writer Ezra Goodman, "The fifty-year decline and fall of Hollywood." One part dealt with the troubles that trade papers of the 1950s had in preserving their editorial independence.
In those days, one could never envision the internet and a print veteran like Jeff winding up with his own operation and an international audience--including many who never miss a day without checking H.E. At least the Weinstein guys are reading and I bet they will be back.Meanwhile Feb. 26 will soon be here , I fear without any real surprises.

First Susan G. Komen, now this. Maybe we can shame them into returning their ads.

I honestly have no idea why you're so vehement against the Artist winning Best Picture or director or actor. The first time I saw it I thought that it was too much of a novelty to be taken seriously, but what other options are there? Hugo? 1/3 a great movie, saved with the last act. The Descendants? Lesser Alexander Payne. The Help? Puh-lease. The only movie that was truly worth of a Best Picture nomination, that exemplified quality filmmaking as well as originality was Drive and that's dead in the water. Just let the Academy pick whomever they want to pick... there's plenty of other things to write about this month rather than wasting time fighting the inevitable. (Clooney could still win Actor by the way... I'm not sure the SAG win for Dujardin is that definitive.)

Two years in a row you've gone on a jihad against the Weinstein Oscar frontrunner. What did you expect?

I miss the huge green MONEYBALL field, but I like the DESCENDANTS ads almost as much. In particular how Clooney seems to run continuously from the left margin into the right margin. Clever.

Heh, I like The Descendants ads too for what they are. Just got around to seeing the movie in question tonight. Not bad at all. Since the Academy didn't see fit to nominate Dragon Tattoo for BP, The Descendants should win. It was pretty good and far better than The Artist and the godawful The Help.

A few months ago you posted with glee that for the first time in HE history, you were rolling in the dough...you told us you went to Palm Springs for the first time because you felt flush...but just the other day you whined about the cost of attending SXSW...and now we hear you have lost ad revenue for your idiotic negative campaign against TWC's The Artist.
Sounds like a self inflicted reversal of fortune to me...Harvey will crush you like the bug you are, Wells.
Foolish. Pretty simple, really; don't shit where you eat.

Stick to your guns - Why resort to what the actors and Weinstein himself are doing?
The dude has way too much power in what gets made and awarded.

Hey, Harvey didn't make THE ARTIST. Any company could have picked it up--but he was the one who did. Regardless of what you think of him, he spots the gold that others miss, and he deserves major props for that.

@Cadavra
Weinstein doesn't sift through the field for winners, he lobbies on their behalf until he wins. HUGE difference.
It's like saying Mitt Romeny's PAC just happened to dislike Newt Gingrich.

But the point is he DOES it. Every year there are plenty of nomination-worthy films that get ignored by their distributors come awards time (two that immediately come to mind are MADE IN DAGENHAM and THE GUARD, both getting the back of the hand from SPC).
