The terms "medieval siege" and "slaughter," used by a reporter in Syria for tonight's episode of Anderson Cooper 360, caught my attention a few minutes ago. And then I began searching YouTube for evidence of Assad government atrocities, and I came upon this, shot in the recently-fallen city of Homs and taken on 1.26.

You get that in Syria we have fundamentalist/Al Queda types trying to overthrow a secular government?
It would be funny how blatant US foreign policy has become were it not so tragic.

Here's one view of it....
Q: Who are the Syrian rebels?
A: The Syrian rebels lack an organized structure, made up of disparate groups united only on the goal of ousting President Bashar Assad and his regime. They include the tens of thousands of Syrians who have joined in relentless protests around the country, along with the young activists who organize them.
Though the movement started out as peaceful marches, now armed groups have arisen. The Free Syrian Army is the largest armed opposition force, made up of army defectors and protesters who have taken up weapons, but its structure is highly loose. Many act independently under the FSA name. The largest opposition umbrella group, the Paris-based Syrian National Council, is trying to unify the resistance, including forming a military bureau to organize armed groups and funnel weapons.
Q: Why are people fighting against Assad's regime?
A: The uprising is not just against Assad, but also against his dynasty. His father and predecessor, Hafez Assad, was known for his ruthlessness towards political dissent. In 1982 he suppressed a rebellion by the Muslim Brotherhood in the town of Hama at the cost of roughly 20,000 lives. When his father died in 2000, Bashar was initially welcomed as a more moderate alternative to the iron-fist of his father. But he soon reversed initial reforms and continued the tight grip on power.

Anything is better than fundamental hard core Muslims taking over the entire middle east. Mubarak and Assad were just FINE compared with the alternatives; they were opposed to secularists taking over, which is what is happening in Egypt, and what will happen in Syria. In a generation things aren't going to be pretty out there. Assad is an IDIOT. All he had to do was allow these protests before it got out of hand, throw everyone a few bones, shuffle some cabinet members and all this would have blown over.

The vile messages/comments under that Youtube video are almost as gut-wrenching as the video itself. Humanity has irrevocably lost its way. I have little faith we'll ever find it.

Yeah, for YOU, here in the comfortable parts of the world; maybe less fine for the millions of people who live(d) under them. Demanding that other people live in fear and misery under tyrants because it's easier for you to forget that their country exists that way is such a tasteful brand of narcissism.

Holy shit, arispil. What the fuck. Assad is a monster, his father was a monster, and that "better a murderous dictator than people power" attitude is basically why tons of people around the world hate America.
