Anderson and Baumbach

Posted by Jeffrey Wells on June 21, 2007 at 10:51 AM

In late '04 (two and a half years ago) Wes Anderson was the big-cheese auteur with his latest film, The Life Aquatic, about to open, and by anyone's yardstick a kind of imposing older-brother figure. Noah Baumbach, obviously, was the new kid on the block -- Anderson's up-and-coming screenwriting collaborator (on Aquatic) whose second film as a director-writer, The Squid and the Whale, was unseen and awaiting its debut at Sundance '05. And yet Anderson's film was soon regarded as a disappointment; three months later Baumbach's was seen as anything but.

Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody in The Darjeeling Limited

Having seen that Margot at the Wedding trailer and having read Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited (another signature Wessy head-trip flick -- quirky humor, odd eccentricities, three brothers on an adventure, father issues, an exotic train ride across India), I would say Anderson and Baumbach's dynamic has changed.

At the very least Baumbach is standing on his own turf now, and doesn't seem to be as locked into a stylized attitude trajectory as Wes still seems to be. I should just shut up, I know, and this is hardly an original thought, but I still feel that Anderson needs to rediscover or re-combust the freshness of spirit he and collaborator Owen Wilson had in spades in the mid to late '90s when they made Bottle Rocket and Rushmore.

Boiled down to basics, I'm still picking up jaded vibes from Anderson camp (i.e., the ones that started to be noticed when journalists began writing articles about the Manhattan tailor who, per specific instructions, cuts Wes's suits a little tighter and shorter than the norm) but not necessarily from Baumbach's. I say this, again, knowing next to nothing about Margot or about their collaboration on that animated (stalled?) Raold Dahl fox-and-the-chicken-coop movie.

Fox Searchlight will be opening The Darjeeling Limited on 12.25.07.

Obviously I'm not the only one to remark that Andersonville has been imploding since the days of The Royal Tennenbaums, but maybe the Anderson undercurrents have shifted in ways I'm not aware of and the Wes fans are processing things in a different light.

All that said, I'm still a raging admirer of Anderson's American Express spot... hilarious, amazing choreography, exactly "right."

THE LIFE AQUATIC really grows on you with repeat viewings. Its also pretty easy to pick up anywhere. Anyone with a Starz/Encore package on their TV can confirm this.

I completely agree about The Life Aquatic getting better with repeated viewings. I wasn't much of a fan the first time I saw it but it might be my favorite Anderson movie now.

And The Squid and the Whale wasn't Baumbach's first movie. I have a pretty big soft spot for Mr. Jealousy, one of his earlier entries.

Also, it's called THE DARJEELING LIMITED. Don't make us tell you again.

i waited a long time to watch THE LIFE AQUATIC because RT was a letdown but i loved TLA. it has possibly bill murray's best role ever and the film moved me. i thought the pirates stuff was lame (mainly because anderson treated them like nobodies instead of giving them character) but there's great stuff in that film.

Thanks, colby. I was going "What? That definitely wasn't Baumbach's first". I'm partial to Kicking & Screaming, though (which finally got a sweet Criterion release). But I would be.

Though I disagree on The Life Aquatic. It irritates me more on repeated viewings.

Noah's first film was Kicking and Screaming and it came out in 1995.

Life Aquatic sits on the shelf like the memories of a beer goggled date. When I hear the name, I shudder and lose any hope of an erection for the next three hours.

But Blue Water White Death is coming out on DVD next month - the documentary about the guy trying to get footage of the Great White Shark.

Squid was Baumbach's third film as writer/director -- you forgot Mr. Jealousy.

I used to clean Owen Wilson's pool. He and Wes are both effete snobs. Wouldn't even glance at the script I tried to give them.

how dare they! i bet nobody has tried to fob off a script on them before. owen wilson effete?

I stopped reading this post at "And yet Anderson's film was soon regarded as a disappointment..." because that's crap. Is there any point in reading the rest of it?

York, you should have tried to have it delivered inside a pizza.

"I used to clean Owen Wilson's pool. He and Wes are both effete snobs. Wouldn't even glance at the script I tried to give them."

Maybe it's because you were the pool guy and your supposed to clean the pool. How 'bout a little decorum. I'm sure you're not the first person to do this to them and at a certain point it gets really obnoxious. In their defense, a buddy of mine knows them pretty well, on a non-professional level, and has nothing but good things to say about them.

That is just beautiful.

The Life Aquatic gets a little better with repeated viewings, I agree, but Wells is 100% on the money I think when he says Anderson's films lost something when Wilson no longer collab'd on the screenplays.

i'm kinda assuming durden was joking...but who knows with that prager scamp around?

So if Wes Anderson just wore looser fitting suits, he would make better films. Sounds right to me.

i hate them fancy lads....

That crazy still photo alone has piqued my interest in "The Darjeeling Limited". Especially that bandage headgear Owen Wilson is wearing. And what's up with that box covered with skulls and crossbones? Are they carrying someone's ashes across India?

The box appears to be the Doodlebug from an episode of Lost In Space.

Don't forget Baumbach's "High Ball," which was quite funny. "Everybody Felix!" I still recall when producer Joel Castleberg showed me a few clips before it was released – it's still funny today… But I do agree that Baumbach has nicely broken the mold of previous endeavors. I thought "Squid…" was great, so I have high expectations for the new film – even though the trailer didn’t excite me and I usually have no patience for anything Nicole Kidman.

Baumbach and Anderson aside, the three actors pictured above are reasons one, two and three why I am completely uninterested in this one. Roman Coppola's presence only further ices that cake.

Jeez, do you hate puppies, kittens, and babies too?
I see not liking one, maybe two of these guys, but all three and Roman Coppola?

i thought CQ was pretty cool and showed a real love for niche cinema.

Puppies, kitten and babies - no. And irritating wankfest of quirkiness featuring puppies, kittens and babies, probably so.

I didn't like York "Budd" Durden's original comment. But it gets better on repeated viewings.

The Life Aquatic definitely has a core group of cult followers... they buy a lot of Zissou / Life Aquatic related t-shirts at http://www.vintagecotton.com - enough that it's worth keeping several Zissou related items on the main page.

"Highball" -- which Baumbach removed his name from -- really is entertaining.

It's a one-set movie about three different parties thrown by one New York couple, and it looks like it cost about $69.95.

The guy who plays the husband is such a terrible actor, he almost sinks the movie. Fortunately, there's good stuff by the "Kicking" crew (including Stoltz) and amusing turns by Peter Bogdanovich and Baumbach himself.

I distinctly remember complaining in 2005 because Jeff was writing virtually nothing about Squid, which I personally thought it was the best film of the year. Now he's acting like he got it when everyone else got it. As for The Life Aquatic, I thought it was great upon first viewing and I can't understand why people still don't appreciate that film's messy humanism. It's an incredibly original film.

And by the way, Baumbach and Anderson were always friends/peers. They're the same age. They made their debuts at around the same time. They were part of a movie posse with Peter Bogdanovich. Yes, Baumbach struggled to get Squid made for a while, but he was never a little brother to Anderson. If you ask me, this is more Spielberg-Lucas than a Coppola-Lucas. And don't forget Jeff, Anderson was instrumental in the success of Squid, offering tons of advice on the script, etc.

As for their latest offerings, I think both have excellent scripts, but I'd give the slight edge to Wes. Noah seems to be re-iterating too many of the themes and characters from Squid, whereas Wes has created something far more disciplined and compressed than his previous work. But I don't see why one has to be evil and the other one has to be great. They're today's answer to Eric Rohmer and Francois Truffaut. If we can respect those two filmmakers, why can't we respect these two?

Er...Kicking And Screaming was Baumbach's first, as far as I remember. Are you wearing makeup?

No. ... .Yes.

CQ was not a bad picture, but Dad had to come in and bat clean-up. Behind the camera, however, is a much better place for him to stay.

My guess is that it's the box of their father's ashes. Maybe this will be the end of Wes Anderson's diminishing returns father-and-son(s) cycle.

I read an early draft of The Darjeeling Limited and thought it was twee and uneventful. I am going to go out on a limb and say that upon release it will be even more poorly received than the Life Aquatic...which I have actually come around to liking quite a bit. It brings me no joy to say this.

I think people will be surprised how straight-ahead Darjeeling is, but it's strangely affecting (on paper) because of this. It's not an elaborate, expensive movie as far as I can tell. It reads more like an intimate short story than a full-blown movie. But if these three actors get the dynamic right, it could be amazing to watch. Part of me wonders why Wes didn't just cast the three main actors from Bottle Rocket, as he's clearly re-working that triangular friendship. This is probably Wilson's most Dignan-like post-BR character. He even creates a daily itinerary for this trio's travels. Also, there are a few classic moments that combine hilarity, sadness, and insight (I'm thinking specifically of a scene with some Australian drunks in an airport bathroom).

Rushmore was overrated. Any sitcom writer could have come up with the same material. Haven't seen his other work, though.

DZ, do you just hate everything good on principal?

I think Rushmore is a masterpiece. RT and Life Aquatic are very good especially the more you see them.

D.Z.:

Worst comment ever, man.

Just when I though DZ couldn't top himself, whammo! Good. Lord.

RUSHMORE is one of the best films of the 90s.It has a helluva lot of heart, and is without a doubt the best thing Anderson has ever done.

I'm also part of the camp that believes LIFE AQUATIC gets better upon repeated viewings. I think it's even better than Tennenbaums. The shootout with the pirates set to the Stooges' "Search and Destroy" is one of my favorite Anderson moments ever.

What happened to he and Wilson's writing partnership? I don't think I've heard a clear explanation about that.

DZ - not to rush to Wes Anderson's defense (I'm not particularly a fan), but if you want to see a sitcom-level treatment of RUSHMORE-like material, get a load of the excruciatingly bad CHARLIE BARTLETT. Fucking awful, and Hope Davis loses all the good will she's earned previously with this performance.

i think the worst scene in TLA is that shootout set to the music. anderson said originally it was silent except for the gunshots which would have been much more effective. it felt like a music montage excess. and i have a weird theory that the film would have done better had they not added the WITH STEVE SIZZOU to the title.

and dz, come on. you're not real.

IT CAN NOW BE TOLD ... when I saw the current AFI champ Citizen Kane in high school in like 1972 , I crawled up into the attic of the auditorium for the second showing and when rosebud came on at the end of the movie I swung a rubber chicken on a rope across the screen so its silhouette was swinging to and fro past the sled ...

How can anyone take issue with Bill Murray and pirates having a shootout set to Search and Destroy?

Who thinks DZ has also not seen Rushmore and was just trying to find some way to jump into the conversation?

I've said it before, why does someone who hates movies (with the rare exception of a few anime titles) post on a movie blog?

In that same categorey of directors: I want Whit Stillman back. Please, someone tell him to get off his ass!

I love Bill Murray. I fucking love the Stooges. I love TRT and Rushmore and Bottle Rocket.

...but, that pirate invasion scene in TLA felt so forced and so gawky that I got that sinking "This is getting worse, not better.." feeling and for me the picture never recovered. I thought the same thing on subsequent viewings.

For all of Wes' perfect music moments, that one was so wrong, so far outside of the stylistic palette of his pictures, that I came to the conclusion that the transition from Wes the charming hipster nerd guy in glasses and thrift store sportcoats to Wes the dashing international auteur with long hair, no glasses and a costume straight out of his decidely non-real world movies portended just what I'd been afraid of: that he could no longer tell the difference between his good and bad ideas.

Christian-

Really? It was supposed to be a HEAT-style shootout with no music? Interesting. Oh well. I'm a huge Stooges fan, maybe that's why I love it so much, but I understand where you're coming from on music montage excess. The only thing is, I think Anderson does it better than most directors. The "A Quick One While He's Away" montage in RUSHMORE is incredible, as is Dignan's last stand in BOTTLE ROCKET set to the Stones' "2000 Man".

"They'll never catch me. Because I'm fucking innocent."

Love BOTTLE ROCKET, as a native Texan born and raised in the Dallas area, that is definitely one of the best local color movies, even though the location is completely nondescript. I used to shop at the bookstore they robbed - Taylor's - before they tore it down. Used to pick up free passes to movie previews there too. And the Northpark 1&2? Greatest theater ever. Sigh. It's gone too. Sorry. Got a little nostalgic there for a sec.

And I've never seen SKIDOO, so I'll be sure to get my tickets. A couple of my good friends are big-time disciples of that movie, and I've heard John Waters talk about it on a few occasions, so I'll be there for sure to see the restored print.

JB Moore's post makes me think that Anderson really needs to return to Texas. I'd love to see him do a screwball take on a LONE STAR type story. He also definetly needs to bring James Caan back into his repertory.

(I feel like those douche casting agents in the final issue of Premiere who would say things like "Benecio would have been great in THE DEPARTED!")

Burma -

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS could've been just that, but he chose the NYC brownstone-set instead.

And I just felt like DZ with that last post. Sorry.

Rushmore just petered out for me when Max and Blume become friends. why doesn't Max seem to care anymore about getting his ass back into Rushmore? But this emptiness is fogged over with Max's Vietnam stage play. I wanted to liked it more than I did.

Also the pirate fight scene is Life Aquatic looked like it was the footage shot by the behind the scenes crew.

corey: What annoys me about Rushmore is the teacher isn't even that hot and Bill Murray just plays a bumbling buffoon.

thanks for the thoughtful insight dz.

meanwhile, back in the real conversation...i adore BOTTLE ROCKET and think wilson's dignan is a unique and incredible comedic character. i saw RUSHMORE in texas and i knew i loved it when chad & jeremy's "summer song" came on... anderson and wilson also came to austin in a bus to promote the film. shoulda gone...

I remember reading a profile of Anderson and Wilson in Texas Monthly about ten years ago, months before RUSHMORE's release, hyping a western script that they had written called BLACK IRISH. Does anyone else know about this? It sounded like it was supposed to be the follow-up to RUSHMORE, but then they went forward with TENNENBAUMS instead.

I agree with whoever first said it above, for the me The Life Aquatic just gets better and better over time. Bill Murray is excellent in that flick.

Totally agree with the prevailing sentiment above -- LIFE AQUATIC was something of a let-down when I first saw it. Re-watched it for the first time last year and LOVED it. LOVED it. Now it ranks behind the perfect RUSHMORE as my fave Anderson film. (Interestingly, with ROYAL TENENBAUMS I had the exact opposite experience.)

And how can I get in touch with D.Z.? I want to invite him to all my parties. Seems like a super fun guy...

Also, more on topic, I've been a Baumbach fan ever since I caught KICKING AND SCREAMING during its far too brief theatrical release. Couldn't be happier that this guy's broken through.

Now that he's on the way up, let's see some old friends start gettin' some big screen work. I want more Chris Eigeman!

"I'm nostalgic for conversations I had yesterday..."

Wes Anderson has never solely written a script, he always has co-writers so essentially he really needs other's input so to speak so regardless of how Noah Baumbach does, whether his movies are successfully realised or not, at least, one thing is clear: he is the master of his own domain.

IClavdivs, Wes only works with other writers because he likes to make writing a social, rather than isolating, experience. His scripts are all clearly written by the same central creative force with other people adding texture and keeping him disciplined. By the way, the real reason he stopped writing with Wilson is the fact that he basically wrote The Royal Tenenbaums alone -- with Wilson contributing ideas here and there -- and he didn't enjoy the isolation of the experience.

As for the sentiment about The Life Aquatic getting better on repeat viewings, can somebody please explain what they didn't like about it the first time that improved on repeat viewings. Or was it just the critical backlash messing with your head? I only ask because most of the Wes Anderson fans I know loved it on first viewing.

is it a cheat to say that a movie gets better with repeated viewings on video? You didn't like it when you paid $10 to see it projected on the big screen in a dark strange room. But you begin to like it on your smaller TV screen, in your house and without an audience of strangers surrounding you. Are you liking this movie as a cinema or as a TV movie?

I didn't like Last Days of Disco in the cinema. It felt sloppy and ragged. But when I picked up the VHS and watched it at home, it improved. Did I misjudge it? Or was it something that plays better when it isn't 30 feet high?

JD, I liked it the first time, my girlfriend hated it, I couldn't really dig what she was saying but I didn't see it again. However, watching it on DVD and TV has turned it into one of my favorite movies.

I liked Life Aquatic a lot the first time around and have liked it more every time I've seen it. I remember the group of people I first saw it with were a little deflated though and many of them have since come around.

I don't know. Sometimes a movie isn't what you expected it to be and it feels disappointing. Other times you succumb to the hype and go in expecting the Best Movie Ever and it's hard for a movie to live up to that kind of expectation.

I remember having those exact reactions the first time I saw Big Lebowski. There was all this expectation because Fargo had won a couple of Oscars and made all kinds of top 10 lists. Going in, I assumed Lebowski but be even better, but it felt like a step backward and a little disappointing. It seemed like a return to Raising Arizona territory and wasn't as good.

In later years, it's grown on me and is now one of my favorites.

The Coen brothers comparison is a good one, cj. Every time they come out with a new movie, it's either declared a return-to-form or a career-ending disaster, but they all equal out over time (okay, Intolerable Cruelty will always suck).

JD, hate to quibble, but INTOLERABLE CRUELTY is a minor but well-crafted scewball gem. One of Clooney's finest performances.

BurmaShave you're the first I've heard admit that there is some good stuff in IC and you'll probably get clobbered for it. It still feels like a fake Coen movie to me and it's my least favorite of their's overall, but there are bits of that movie that are great. The whole business with Wheezy Joe was top shelf Coen.

I'm really worried about the expectations building behind No Country for Old Men. I'm avoiding all reviews and all trailers and trying to exist in a Coen free vaccuum so the movie can just speak for itself when I finally see it...but it's not easy.

I think Intolerable Cruelty is hilarious. If it hadn't been a Coen brothers movie, it would have received much better reviews. I think that many people went into it with elevated expectations and were disappointed. It's a comedy, plain as that; I don't see anything wrong with it.

I also agree that it is one of Clooney's best roles. He should do more comedy, his timing is spot on.

JD - I didn't hate TLA when I first saw it. I just didn't think it was up to par with his other work. Too busy, too many characters, too much emphasis on production and costume design over story and character development. Same problem I had with Tenenbaums, another one which grew on me (I was disappointed in it more so than TLA). Everything with the characters in both of those movies flies at you so fast it's almost sensory overload, as opposed to the more intimate approaches of BR and RUSHMORE. Repeated viewings of both have smoothed out the problems I had with them, and I think they're both great, although BR and RUSHMORE are what I consider his best, esp. RUSHMORE.

And INTOLERABLE CRUELTY was great. Talk about going into a movie expecting the worst and being pleasantly shocked. I have to agree with Burma that it was a minor screwball gem, and Clooney was top-notch.

I cleaned Wes Anderson's toilet for an few lean months there back in '02 and, oh, sister, if toilets could talk! But they can't. All kinds of vicera and rank fluids I wiped off the seat and the underside of that vay-say. I vomited often, and not just because of the drinking. I gave Wes a screenplay too, which he manifestly ignored. That wasn't the first inkling I had that he was an effete snob. (I'll say no more, out of respect for my former employer.) Admittedly, it wasn't a screenplay so much as a "treatment," hand-inked on "White Cloud" toilet tissue, which was the only brand he'd sanction. So the words were a bit blurry as they bled into the fabric of the roll. I'm sure you all realize how soft and luxurious "White Cloud" is.
