DVD Journal shutting down

DVD Journal, the anonymously-written DVD-connoisseur website that launched in August 1997, has closed up shop. I read the nameless editor's statement (posted yesterday) about what's going on, only he doesn't really say anything. There's an acknowledgement that the DVD market share is going down and that this may have something to do with ad revenues or the moon's orbit or whatever, but he definitely has trouble with the concept of just spitting it out. Real men put their cards on the table. If anyone really knows why these guys are dimming the lights, please advise.

While it is sad to see DVD Journal go, I don't know if I'm that surprised. They had cut back to just one or two posts a week. It has been pretty slow over there.
As for reasons, they may have just gotten tired continuing with it. I don't think it was a full time site for anyone involved. The only revenue seems to have come from links to Amazon, that only pay out if someone buys something by clicking on it.
So, sad to see them go, but as they say, it seems the writers have just moved on with their lives and have other things they want to do.

The recent donnybrook over Paramount and Universal becoming HD-DVD exclusive pretty much insures that the format war will continue into the foreseeable future. An IMDB survey cited by The Digital Bits revealed that something like 82% of respondents were either going to sit out the format war until there was a clear winner, or had no idea what HD-DVD and Blu Ray were.
I suspect that the editors of DVD Journal saw the handwriting on the wall. Digital downloads are closer than we think. (A friend of mine recently attended a conference of industry heavy hitters that opined that this is the "last Christmas" for CD.) Tangible media are dead. They probably wanted to find a new niche before they were forced to.

There's no conspiracy. I think the answer is in this sentence of that farewell statement: "Our own world has changed in the past decade as well, with marriages, children, new homes, career changes, and various other things that happen to sensible people when the subtle business of adulthood creeps up on them unawares."
DVD Journal was clearly never more than a wonderful labor of love for a very small group of writers.
Peoples' lives change. Our priorities and availability changes.
I think they just decided to move on. It was a great run for them. For my part, I really enjoyed the site, but it was clear that it was running out of steam the past year.
I congratulate them on their Web site's run and for going out while still in fine form.

Then, jeffmcm, I guess you never attend movies at the theater?
Plus, how old are you? If you are above the age of, say, 25, then you are not the new target audience. I work with several professionals age 30 and younger. They have no interest in CDs or DVDs and consider them clutter.

Regarding dvds: I haven't bought one in over a year. Back in the late 90's early 00's I would buy several a month. Part of it is that I've gotten older and I'm not as interested in a lot of what is being put out nowadays. Most movies are nothing more than to sell product placements. However there are a lot of good to great movies that I don't buy mainly because they're not the type of films that I would want to watch more than once. Then there are the movies that I would like to own but never do because if I'm in the mood I can always just rent them. DVDs do take up space and I'm currently going through the hundreds that I own and getting rid of what I don't watch regularly. I'm finding that it's a lot of movies.

Balthazar nails it. I was practically writing gratis for AICN when I joined The DVD Journal as a regular contributor in 2003, but the honor of writing alongside the esteemed likes of D.K. Holm, Alexandra du Pont, Greg Dorr, Damon Houx, Dawn Taylor, Mark Bourne, JJB, etc. was compensation enough. No one got rich off of The J, but everyone still brought their "A" game. Pick a review at random from the archive, and you're bound to find some great writing and original thought.
I've written for a lot of websites and publications over the years, but The DVD Journal occupies a special place in my heart. It was a civilizing influence. I'll miss it.

My suggestion -- which would be true of almost any semi-pro DVD site started in 1997 -- is that the central purpose of the site was to promote someone's goal of widespread DVD acceptance. By this point, you either change purpose statements or find something else to do with your time.
Heck, I started my anime site in 1997, and it's slowed down for similar reasons. In 1997, you could barely find anime at any store...made sense to promote it. Now the market's so glutted that you can barely tell what's worth watching anymore. The service my site provides is now quite different.

The whole "DVDs and CDs are dead" statement has always sounded like a marketing ploy designed to lure consumers into the next wave of planned obsolescence. Sure, they take up space on your shelves, but they also provide better picture and sound (on proven storage media) than downloading does now.
I'd love for the day to arrive when I could purchase a high-definition version of 300 that would look and sound as good as Blu-Ray or HD DVD and not have the file take up most of my hard drive. I'd like a guarantee that the hard drive would never crash (XBOX 360) and that the picture and sound woudn't be overly compressed (Itunes, Direct TV). And finally, I'd like the downloading to take about as long as it takes me to grab a copy of 300 off of my shelf and load it into my DVD player.
"Tangible media" will always be with us as long as throwbacks like myself care about such quaint and outdated concepts as quality, ease of usage, and reliability.
Ironically, all the people I know who pontificate about how CDs and DVDs are "clutter" are the ones who are constantly asking to borrow titles from my collection.

DVDs aren't dead. Although Netflix has put a major dent in the number of titles I buy a year.
as far as DVD clutter goes, I've been dumping the the boxes and putting the disc in envelopes to free up shelf space.
What does this say about websites that don't get bought up by Google, Fox or TV Guide.

Excellent points Aunt Sassy, although I think those problems you cite with digital distribution will all improve or disappear a LOT sooner than you think.
Also, I used to buy DVD's regularly - like at least two or three a month if not more. But Netflix killed that habit, and I think I've purchased maybe six or so in the past four years. Netflix even has HD-DVD now so why bother buying a format that may die soon when you can simply rent it?

HA! I love Rich S.' "I work with a lot of under-30s" comment! The hallmark of an out of touch person is when they use the "I know several young people and.." phrase. Man, nothing makes me more amused than that.
And oh, yeah -- I'm the "target market" and I still buy DVDs. In fact, I know NO ONE (under 30s, over 30s, blah blah blah) that buys solely digital. Why would they? The quality is shit and it's a pain to watch. So much easier to pay 15 bucks and buy the damn thing.

I merely pointed out what I've observed. "My name is Rich S., and I'm a recovering early adopter." I jumped into VHS with both feet. I then moved to laser for the picture quality and to get letterboxed films. When DVD arrived, I installed a drive in my PC because that was the cheapest way to get on board. I probably have at least 300 movies and 30 TV series sets on DVD.
But I'm finished with the early adoption. No more. Hi-Def DVD may taste like pumpkin' pie, but I'd never know it because I'm not biting this time. I notice that a lot of these arguments are pertaining to DVD (downloads aren't good enough quality, you have to watch it on you computer screen, etc.). But, a few stragglers aside, the war has already been fought and lost over CD. Video media are following the same curve.
If you think that Bill Gates and others aren't looking at how much money Jobs and Apple made on the iTunes model, you're crazy. It's only a matter of time.

There is no basis to believe that VOD or video downloads will be able to match either (a) the quality, or (b) the variety of physical media in the reasonably foreseeable future. Anybody who tells you otherwise is talking out of his ass, and anyone who loves movies should be very concerned about these issues.

Rich - if you only have 300 DVDs and were an early adopter, that means you bought 30 discs per year?
You're not their target audience. The people they're going after are the ones who (still) buy 30 discs a month. The ones who go through the new stacks and say, "Hey, Juwanna Man special edition? SIGN ME UP!"
(If picking a really, really bad black movie is too racist for people, it could just as easily be 'Wild Hogs' or 'Captivity'; excessive bad movie buying crosses all races and genders.)
