New "Jesse James" trailer

The old teaser for Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner Bros., 9.21) -- the one that's been out since roughly September 2006 -- had, at best, a marginal impact. It gave you a taste of what Casey Affleck's Ford might be like -- his dorky, vaguely malevolent obsessiveness -- and little else. But the new trailer is a huge compositional turn-on. As in, like, whoa....
Finally, the much-touted Andrew Wyeth-Terrence Malick-y element has been let out of the bag. With all the "uh-oh" buzz swirling around this film for so many months, why did Warner Bros. wait so long to serve up the visual majesty?
A friend who saw it the other day calls it "quite beautiful, lyrical, extremely well-acted, and definitely too long.
"It's basically a film about celebrity and hero worship. Casey Affleck is excellent as the callow Bob Ford, who's followed the career of Jesse James for years, and wants to be part of his gang. Brad Pitt is also very good as James, a melancholy psychopath with a certain charisma who is prone to murderous rages. It has a lot of voiceover narration lifted directly from Ron Hansen's novel, but in this case, it's beautiful writing that perfectly fits the tone and magnificent visuals.
"But length-wise, it's just too darn much of a good thing. Dominik could a have shaved five seconds here, ten seconds there off of any number of scenes, and easily gotten this down to a more manageable running time of 125 minutes or so.
"It won't make a dime. Too languid, and Warner Bros. has no idea what to do with it. They didn't even have notes at the screening I attended. and there's less than a month before the release. The question I have to ask is: why didn't someone put this in a European film festival? It would have killed over there, and gotten some critical support."

While I'm quite excited to see this move, I worry that a little too much might be lifted from Malick.
Specifically, I am really tired of seeing a man of violence's hand brushing through a beautiful grain field. I've seen it in Malick's films, I've seen it in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, and at least a few other places. Get a new image.

So maybe I'm overly cynical, but does anyone else maybe now see Mangold's comments about the "Epic-ization" of westerns as a little bit of pre-emptive defensiveness?
I mean, there's no way 3:10 to Yuma and this film aren't going to wind up being compared to each other, no matter how different their goals and approaches.

Looks like a great film to lose oneself in. (It looks like it also has a bit of the McCabe and Mrs. Miller vibe that Michael Winterbottom's The Claim soaked up.) But has anyone anywhere made the point yet that this is actually an epic remake of Samuel Fuller's I Shot Jesse James? Judging by the trailer, it even replays the famous bathtub scene. Geez.

The movie is not too long. It's long, and you can see where it could have been cut, but it's wonderful to have a movie that takes its time. Also, this movie is not Malickian. It is Great, though.

I can see this movie turning out to be just like Branaugh's Hamlet. A killer script, cinematography, and trailer that all equaled a film that is almost impossible to sit through twice due to pretentious ambition.

I never pull stuff out of my ass. The person in the post, perhaps unbeknownst to himself, is describing tempo: "Dominik could a have shaved five seconds here, ten seconds there off of any number of scenes, and easily gotten this down to a more manageable running time of 125 minutes or so." No offense to Devin, because everyone does it, but, from our vantage point, we can't see where it could have been cut, so it's a futile exercise and hardly worthwhile, especially since he goes on to say how wonderful it is that it takes its time (even more meaningless). And I don't mean to pick on Devin, I'm sure he's a great guy.

Dylan Tischenor is one of the few editors working today who makes consistently unorthodox and interesting choices. Whether his films are long or short ultimately isn't this choice, though. Editors construct scenes and moments, they don't determine a film's length. You don't just chop scenes from a movie without the director's approval. In any case, his resume is incredibly good and there's no doubt that he edited/co-edited two of the most anticipated movies of the fall: Jesse James and There Will Be Blood.

Thanks JD, for more meaninglessness. An editor doesn't determine a movie's length, but he can present tightly tempo-ed scenes to the director without the director ever knowing it wasn't performed that way, until and unless he decides to undo it and falls for his own mess. That's the reality, and since re-tempo-ing is such hard work, and the director may undo it anyway, why bother in the first place?
