Amy Adams in "Enchanted"

Posted by Jeffrey Wells on September 29, 2007 at 11:35 AM

A producer with no connection to Enchanted, Kevin Lima's part-animated, part live-action fantasy drama that opens on 11.21, saw it last night at the Landmark and believes that Amy Adams, who plays a fairytale princess named Giselle who's thrust into the harsh present and needs to adjust her perspective as a result, will receive an Oscar nomination.

"The movie is a very well-conceived, well-made product straddling the po-mo Pixar style and the throwback Walt-era tropes," the producer says. "But Adams gives an incredibly complex, detailed performance that it makes the movie seem almost literary -- there is a scene when her character first feels anger that brings to mind John Milton. The movie will be gigantic and will make Adams a worldwide household name."

I had a chance to see this film too, and I agree that Adams is amazing. Disney has a poor track record pushing its actors for Oscar noms, so I doubt she'll get a nod, though she should.

Wow, I didn't really see that coming. I assumed Enchanted would be the final insult to the Walt era of Disney, the ultimate Shrekification with plenty of barf and fart jokes and boring pop cultural references.

Kind of glad to hear I might be totally wrong.

Fuck that, she's going to WIN! SIGHT UNSEEN BUT I JUST KNOW IT!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

*BLAM* *THUD*

Do not be fooled by the trailer: Enchanted is a wonderful Disney picture of the classic school, quite as good as Mary Poppins. Walt himself would have absolutely adored it. It is hard to remember when I last enjoyed a picture as much. The whole cast is wonderful, especially Timothy Spall and Susan Sarandon, but Amy Adams' performance is absolutely iconic; if my daughter is any judge, Amy Adams is soon to be worshipped as a goddess by young girls the world over. Even the songs are terrific.

Well, a Golden Globe comedy/musical for sure... and isn't Disney the ones who got Johnny Depp a nomination for a $300 million action franchise? I think between this and Carell in Dan in Real Life they have two possible candidates and Disney is really good about doing lots and lots of award screenings of movies that are deemed worthy even both of those will be more for performance than actual movie/direction, etc.

What does your boyfriend think of it?

Was that addressed to me, Burma? I don't have a boyfriend. I am straight and have been married for twelve years. Why do you ask? Do you fear that watching a Disney picture might turn you into a homosexual? Or did it happen already? Do tell.

BurmaShave had to break another twenty. It sucks working in a tollbooth.

Well you do like ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE.

Prager I do data entry at a Defense related company, actually. God I wish I could work outdoors!

"Prager I do data entry at a Defense related company, actually."

God, that sounds depressing.

Depressing? In the words of Klaus Von Bulow: You have no idea.

To get this thread off my childish insults, why did Vanity Fair bury their sptrsf on Amy Adams in the Nicole Kidman issue? Why not give her the November cover?

whoa *spread on Amy Adams.

I thought you were talking about the Sussex Poll Tax Resisters Support Fund.

Of which I am an active supporter!

"Prager I do data entry at a Defense related company, actually."

I feel your pain.

"Amy Adams' performance is absolutely iconic; if my daughter is any judge, Amy Adams is soon to be worshipped as a goddess by young girls the world over."

So Sinclair has a daughter. Her teenage years are going to be fun.

I'm all for kicking someone in the balls when they're being a douche, but if they're just being honest, movie-loving people, what's the point of bringing the hate?

As you all may recall from the Kevin Smith hate-thread a few months back that Kevin even referenced on his own blog (http://silentbobspeaks.com/?m=20070701)....

GeorgePrager has no interest in bringing anything useful to the table. He is just an old-fashioned forum troll, attempting to stir up trouble to gain attention.

Adams was the best thing about "Junebug," so this isn't difficult to believe.

That's correct, Wiggumx. I stopped responding to his posts months ago; now I don't even bother reading them.

Wiggumx is just jealous. I'm trying to remember a Wiggumx post. I can't. I just googled Wiggumx. This is the first entry:

Wiggumx - WarcraftRealms.com
A complete World of Warcraft realm site including Warcraft Census data.

Pretty weird. And Sinclair is just pissed because I proved that Ian Fleming was a cuckold and that he is a Chav.

Sidestepping the personal attacks, let's get back to films, shall we? Haven't seen "Enchanted," however, the trailer was wonderful. It gave you a sense of the film without telling the whole damn story. One I'm actually planning to see in a theater.

Sinclair I didn't read your first comment well enough to process you have a child. Pretty shitty of me. Please consider a full retraction of my insult and a humble apology.

C'mon, Burm, he's lying. He doesn't have a child. He's never brought it up until now. His post was thought up in a marketing department months ago. Next week he'll be telling us how much his cleaning lady liked FEEL THE NOISE.

At the same time, I do think this is going to be a good movie. I laughed when I saw a clip on Entertainment Tonight and I look forward to watching it when it is on HBO sometime in November 2009.

Amy Adams has a number of Oscar nominations in her future, so whether or not she gets one for Enchanted is irrelevant.

I fell hard for the trailer, though. Glad to hear that the movie delivers.

I ADORE Amy Adams, she should had won with Junebug (that performance still is locked in my mind) So talented, so natural, SO BEAUTIFUL.
The fact that she doesn’t get one percent of the media attention that hideous creatures like Jessica Simpson, Jessica Alba or Jessica Biel is one of he reasons Hollywood is in such bad state.

All I know is that immediately upon seeing the trailer, my girlfriend told me that, like it or not, we'd be there opening weekend. And if it's hitting a 26-year-old like that, it's damn sure hitting the younger crowd.

Amy Adams was great even in the friggin commentary track for Junebug. I wonder if she knows I'm stalking her yet.

Ah man, she's awesome. I'll see the film just for her. No questions asked.

Does Prager really think he's going to achieve some sort of fame by being relentlessly annoying on someone else's blog? That's sad, and certainly nothing that I would be jealous of.

Re Amy Addams: She's the reason that I want to see this movie, and I'm glad to hear that it may not be Disney dreck. Her performance in Junebug keeps me coming back to that movie, long after most films released at that time have since been forgotten.

Wiggumx brought something to the table today. He said that he likes Amy Adams and even admits to watching the mediocre JUNEBUG more than once because of her performance. Wiggumx gives good table.

Meanwhile, Sinclair brought his imaginary daughter to Bloomingdales and Serendipity today.

I will not get into a flame war with a hyper-active child who is only seeking attention.

Why don't you attack Wells and see where it gets you?

We can all agree Amy Adams rules though, right?

She certainly does in Enchanted.

Dear Burmashave

Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Sorry for the delay, a chum had to let me know.

er, um, (reluctantly raising hand), uh, who is amy adams?

I'd love to hear that conversation:

"Hello, Ian ol' chum, I'd thought I'd give you a bell and tell you that BurmaShave has retracted his
homosexuality charge and has apologized."

"Cheers."

"Cheers."

Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)
