Cloverfield [BLU-RAY] (Paramount Home Entertainment, 6.3.2008) Disguised under deliberately goofy, yet deliciously edible-sounding, aliases such as Cheese and Slusho, Matt Reeves' Cloverfield was produced and rushed into theaters under an equally appetizing shroud of secrecy. From last year's incredibly elusive Super Bowl ad to the film's viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield had everybody scratching their heads and drooling in anticipation. Aside from the as-yet untitled title and the Blair Witch-ian visual style, the film's biggest appeal was the enigmatic creature who was last (un)seen hurling the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty onto the crowded streets of New York City. All we knew about the mysterious beast was that it was big and angry. Now that the highy-anticipated project has come and gone, one question has fortunately been answered: Cloverfield was a major success. (continued)

The Cost of Being Black

Remember when I said this election would not be decided on race, but issues? Well, I still stand by that statement, but this AP story linked by Ben Smith, makes an interesting argument for exactly how much Obama's skin costs him, statistically. Six percentage points.

Now, no one knows how accurate this is, but it still makes it's point that America's bigotry counts for six percentage points in the polls. I'm sure people are glad it's not bigger than six, but six is way too big.

There is a silver lining in all of this. The most recent Daily Kos poll says Obama has kicked it into gear with an 8-point lead, 50-42. The new kitchen sink strategy is still working, while the most recent McCain and Palin gaffes also add fuel to the fire. If this pace keeps up, Obama should be sitting nice if this lasts till the debates...which most pundits will tell is when we'll really get a feel for who wins the election.
