Hail Pussy Well Met

I’m sorry to report that Vincent “Big Pussy” Pastore passed today at age 80.

17 years ago I had the honor of meeting Pastore, who was 63 at the time. It was just a chit-chat encounter, but I felt I “knew” the guy. He was a tad brusque but basically amiable and certainly unpretentious.

I’ll never forget that moment when detective Vin Makazian (John Heard) told Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) that Pussy Bonpensiero was “wired for sound.”

Last night I was introduced to Vincent Pastore (a.k.a. “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero from The Sopranos) at the Rescue Me after-party at the Times Square Hard Rock cafe. Nice guy but his hand was thick and smallish and dry — it felt like coarse sandpaper.

Vincent explained right away that he was showing the Hard Rock’s historical displays — i.e., guitars and costumes used by famous musicians — to a young dark-haired lady he was with.

The slightly overdressed girl, who spoke with a borough accent and appeared to be in her mid to late 20s, said she was “very interested [in the displays] because I don’t know anything about rock ‘n’ roll. I only know about disco.”

Right away I cocked my head. “But disco was thirty years ago,” I said. “Yeah, but my parents were only into disco,” she replied, “so that’s all I know about.”

First, what kind of cast-iron blinders do you have to be wearing to only know about the kind of music that your parents were into during the Jimmy Carter administration?

And second, who admits to mixed company that their parents’ taste in music has not only defined their interests but also kept them from having any curiosity about other forms of music for their entire life?

DSA Nutters Will Probably Steer Democrats Into a Ditch

The DSA wacko-commie fringe of the current Democratic party is simply reacting to the disproportionate power of the AI tech-bro billionaires….to the despair, the data centers, the big 2026 chill, the “enough of this shit…the selfish boomers and GenXers have to be disciplined if not shut down.” So I get where the DSA fervor is coming from. That said, Maher is not wrong.

Newsom Nothingburger

Longer reply to “scandal” assertion, also posted this morning:

I’ve been “strangely silent”, you say, over the 2005 affair Newsom had with Ruby Rippey Tourk, the wife of his campaign manager friend while serving as San Francisco mayor? Are you being facetious? Cosplaying as a tabloid editor?

Newsom admitted to this and apologized for it 20 years ago. Plus we all understand that big-time politicians are naturally randy, especially when relatively young. (Newsom was 38 at the time.) How many hundreds of thousands of extra-marital workplace affairs (RRT was working with Newsom at the time) ignite on a regular basis within the professional class in this country? Such affairs inevitably happen, especially when alcohol is part of the overall picture. (Newsom admitted to this also.)

The heart wants what it wants. Okay, Mr. Happy usually triggers at first, but the heart rushes in right after.

Have you ever heard The Cars’ “My Best Friend’s Girl”? In The Apartment Jack Lemmon’s C.C. Baxter, everyone’s idea of a morally decent mensch, admits to having had a mad affair with the wife of a friend. Have you ever seen Richard Quine’s “Strangers When We Meet” (‘60)?

I was involved in a torrid office affair while at People magazine (January ‘98 thru September ‘00), and while I wasn’t the adulterer (she was married and living with a motorcycle-riding hubby, a small business owner, in Belmont Shores) it was easily the most deliriously ecstatic and emotionally devastating relationship of my entire life, and my heart goes out to anyone who’s been through this kind of erotic, head-over-heels maelstrom.

We don’t rationally decide to give our hearts to others like we decide to buy a car or a house — we fall into the pits of passion.

The bottom line is that we’re all human and THESE THINGS HAPPEN all the time.
