Newsom Nothingburger

Longer reply toscandalassertion, also posted this morning:

I’ve been “strangely silent”, you say, over the 2005 affair Newsom had with Ruby Rippey Tourk, the wife of his campaign manager friend while serving as San Francisco mayor? Are you being facetious? Cosplaying as a tabloid editor?

Newsom admitted to this and apologized for it 20 years ago. Plus we all understand that big-time politicians are naturally randy, especially when relatively young. (Newsom was 38 at the time.) How many hundreds of thousands of extra-marital workplace affairs (RRT was working with Newsom at the time) ignite on a regular basis within the professional class in this country? Such affairs inevitably happen, especially when alcohol is part of the overall picture. (Newsom admitted to this also.)

The heart wants what it wants. Okay, Mr. Happy usually triggers at first, but the heart rushes in right after.

Have you ever heard The Cars’ “My Best Friend’s Girl”? In The Apartment Jack Lemmon’s C.C. Baxter, everyone’s idea of a morally decent mensch, admits to having had a mad affair with the wife of a friend. Have you ever seen Richard Quine’s “Strangers When We Meet” (‘60)?

I was involved in a torrid office affair while at People magazine (January ‘98 thru September ‘00), and while I wasn’t the adulterer (she was married and living with a motorcycle-riding hubby, a small business owner, in Belmont Shores) it was easily the most deliriously ecstatic and emotionally devastating relationship of my entire life, and my heart goes out to anyone who’s been through this kind of erotic, head-over-heels maelstrom.

We don’t rationally decide to give our hearts to others like we decide to buy a car or a house — we fall into the pits of passion.

The bottom line is that we’re all human and THESE THINGS HAPPEN all the time.
