There’s been a serious booking war between the the 64th New York Film Festival (9.25 thru 10.12) and the almost-a-month-earlier Telluride Film Festival (9.4 thru 9.7), so perhaps the NYFF’s Fjord downgrade (Spotlight rather than main slate) is over Fjord being booked to debut stateside in Telluride?
I’m told that at least four of the NYFF Spotlight selections (Fjord included) will have their first peek-out at Telluride.
Paper Tiger director-writer James Gray is allegedly quite upset at the NYFF crew for their having kibboshed an early Telluride looksee. He wanted to take Paper Tiger to the Colorado mountain haven but NYFF said “nope, you’re booked as our opening-night film so fuck you, no Telluride.”
Please tell me again why Tony Gilroy‘s Behemoth! blew off possible Venice and Telluride debuts in order to receive a NYFF centerpiece slot?
Jessie Eisenberg‘s The Debut won’t have its first-anywhere showing at the Venice Film Festival (9.2 to 9.12) because Eisenberg and his producers wanted a worldwide Telluride debut, and this year the only way to play both, time-wise and flight-wise, would have been for the theoretical Venice screening to happen on 9.2 or 9.3 or something like that. Rudimentary math.,
