Brad Furman‘s Runner Runner (20th Century Fox, 9.27) is basically Oliver Stone‘s Wall Street (’87) meets Ben Younger‘s Boiler Room (00) + Robert Luketic‘s 21 (’08). It’s Justin Timberlake as Charlie Sheen/Bud Fox and Ben Affleck as Michael Douglas/Gordon Gekko, more or less. Furman’s The Lincoln Lawyer (’11) was sturdy and satisfying, but we’ve definitely seen Runner Runner before.
Did you know that Runner Runner is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Brian Koppelman, David Levien, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher? I didn’t before today. I didn’t give a shit, I mean. Not that I don’t give a shit now — I do. I know Runner Runner is going to be at least pretty good because Furman is the real deal. I just wish they could make these films without everyone knowing exactly what’s going to happen and even what some of the lines are going to be (“You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into!”).
