Paul Schrader engineered a stunning comeback with First Reformed, which tallied a Rotten Tomato score of 95%. It delivered the kind of lean, flinty, straight-faced realism that hadn’t been seen from Schrader since….what, Light Sleeper? Or should I say Hardcore (’90)?
