Ten days ago a producer I’ve known for a quarter-century told me that David Poland and/or Movie City News is “leaving the internet.” That struck me as…I don’t know, a bit curious? Nobody just up and quits anything without something else to jump into as an alternative revenue stream. MCN might be less of an industry force than it was 10 or 15 years ago but it’s still there, still contributing to the conversation. And I love those Ray Pride-generated links.

“How do you know this?” I asked the producer. He didn’t reply and that was that. I figured “okay, leave it alone, hold your horses and wait for the other shoe to drop.”

Last night it dropped. Sort of. Mostly but not specifically.

“I don’t know what the immediate future will bring for Movie City News,” David Poland wrote last night. “Laura Rooney and I gave birth to this thing almost 16 years ago. Ray Pride has been my editorial partner for years. It is still a viable business and website, but the right circumstance to move it forward has not shown itself.”

I’ve read Poland’s somewhat vaguely worded post (“Breaking Up Is Hard To Do“) three times, and he doesn’t literally say he’s pulling the plug on MCN. Although he may. Obviously when you post about moving on and breaking up you’re saying the curtain is more or less coming down. Poland wanted to say it but he could’t quite bring himself to say it, so he half-declared and half-hedged. Although he’s more or less declared.

Friend: “It seems like he’s casting about for a way to basically keep something going so Ray isn’t put out on the street. That’s my sense of it.”

“I’m 53 years old,” Poland states, “and it’s time for the next act. I need to end my public-facing life and take it all private. I need to work for the other team, if they will have me. I want to keep loving movies. I want to support movies I love. I want to support great filmmakers. And I want to use the experience and knowledge and simple brain power every day that I can in my life.

“I want to work hand-in-fist with the executives whom I have known and respected for years and for those I do not yet know, finally free to help me get down to the absolute truths of situations glorious and grotesque in order to help them be even better at what they do. I need to start signing NDAs and doing the work I hope will take me to a very late retirement. I am raring to go.”

He also states very clearly that he’s going to keep going with DP30, which has 100,000 subscribers. But that he wants to start working for “the other side”, presumably in marketing.

Props to the red-haired, man-bun guy who stood up at Donald Trump‘s rally in Duluth, Minnesota…a lone lefty in a sea of red hats. Conviction and cojones.

“Goodbye, darling,” Trump said as security hustled the guy out. “We have a single protester…he’s going home to his mom…say ‘hi’ to Mommy,” Trump said. “Was that a man or a woman? Because he needs a haircut more than I do. I couldn’t tell.”

Of course he could tell. Man-buns are a total guy thing. Mostly a blue-state or coastal thing, okay, but fairly common in all areas. Women will tie their hair into a bun at the mall but almost never at rallies or at the movies or at a restaurant. Guys will man-bun it at such places, but not women. HE has never approved of man-buns because they convey a lack of integrity. If you’re going to wear your hair long, great, but why wear it long if you’re going to wear a man-bun day in and day out?

Why are the famed Magno Screening Rooms (729 Seventh Avenue) closing on 6.27? In his obit Showbiz 411‘s Roger Friedman wrote that “the great screening rooms are disappearing,” in part because “publicists send links now.” Yeah, they do for some films, but screening rooms aren’t closing in Los Angeles, or at least not to my knowledge. All the studios maintain their first-class screening facilities, and the indie rooms — Raleigh, Wilshire, Rodeo, Sepulveda, Sunset and Ocean Ave. — are still in business. And of course the all-media screenings are still happening. Links are just one way to see films. It would be a huge mistake for distributors to not make a serious effort to present all their films to critics in a screening room of whatever size. A communal experience commands your full attention. Watching a film on your Macbook Pro is the pits.

Posted on 6.27.13: “I didn’t crash Gandolfini’s funeral like some giggling monkey, and I didn’t take the subway up there this morning with the intention of crashing. I crashed it solemnly like some devoted choirboy or Sopranos family soldier. I just grimmed up and shuffled up the cathedral steps and…well, go ahead and laugh but I honestly believe that I got past security because some angel from heaven who lived in my area of New Jersey when he or she was mortal happened to look down from heaven at that moment and said ‘whoa, wait up…he’s okay…fuck it, let him through.’

“Inside the main cathedral door were three women dressed in black with clipboards and lists, checking names. I just slowly but stealthily sidestepped them and slowly made my way to the bag-checking guy who was standing at a desk, and then to the metal-detector guy. The latter wanded me and seemed a tiny bit alarmed when he got a “beep!” from two tins of Altoids I had in my left jacket pocket. “I’m gonna have to see what that is, sir,” he said. “Sure thing, man,” I answered, and pulled out the bigger of the two Altoid tins. He wanded me again….beep! “That’s another tin of Altoids,” I told him.

I almost never post anything I’ve heard about early-bird research screenings, particularly if the reactions are mezzo or negative. But every so often I’ll make an exception. I’ve picked up some positive responses to last night’s research screening of Damian Chazelle‘s First Man, and I gather it’s cool to post them. They’ve come from three viewers but I’m just throwing them into one cheese-and-onions scramble. Pretend that it’s one person sharing.

“Very similar to Dunkirk. Just a pure theatrical experience. Extremely intense and muscular. The cinematography is incredible. So many breathtaking compositions. Damien Chazelle composes and directs the hell out of it, frequently switching to a gritty, handheld documentary style. It feels like a Paul Greengrass film at times. Fantastic set pieces. Ryan Gosling is excellent as Neil Armstrong — not a showy, transformative performance — and Claire Foy gives an amazing performance too. It has a layered screenplay with effective emotional beats. Never a dull moment, well-paced, technically impressive (as expected) and I really enjoyed the score.”

Taron Egerton, the absolute personification of arid robot 21st Century CG bullshit comic-book formula flotsam with his two Kingsman turns and lead performance in the forthcoming CG bullshit power-pop Robin Hood fantasy…Taron Egerton as Elton John in a forthcoming biopic called Rocketman? It sounds like a terrible idea. He doesn’t even begin to resemble the Real McCoy. Then again I suppose it’s possible that Egerton, who’s done a little theatre, has more up his sleeve than his movie roles so far have suggested.

Jamie Bell will reportedly play John’s songwriter partner Bernie Taupin. Dexter Fletcher, who did clean-up on Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was canned, will direct the John-Taupin flick.

Most of John’s present-day fans (i.e., the ones who know him from his Las Vegas shows or performing “Candle in the Wind” at Lady Di’s funeral in ’97) are probably unaware that once upon a time he was this slender, balding guy in platform shoes and oversized glitter glasses.

When I think of my favorite John-Taupin tunes…well, it’s a shifting and movable feast. But my top ten usually include “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”, “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”, “Captain Fantastic and the Brown-Dirt Cowboy”, “Your Song”, “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”, “Sad Songs”, “Mona Lisa and Mad Hatter”, “Honky Cat”, “Tiny Dancer” and “Funeral For a Friend.” And I’ve always hated “Daniel”…hated it.

Given Ad Astra‘s officially announced opening date of 1.11.19, it always seemed obvious that it would actually open in late ’18 to qualify for Oscars, Globes and whatnot. According to costar Jamie Kennedy, 20th Century Fox and James Gray‘s sci-fi flick will, in fact, open on 12.25.18.

Kennedy actually said this several weeks ago on The Shift with Drex, a Canadian late-night talk show. Here’s a clip of Kennedy’s disclosure.

Ad Astra is a father-son space exploration drama involving extra-terrestrial intelligence. It stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland and Kennedy. Boilerplate: “Twenty years after Clifford McBride (Jones) left on a one-way mission to Neptune in order to find signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence, his son Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), an Army Corps engineer travels through the solar system to find him and understand why his mission failed.”

Alternate title: It’s All About Maximum Branding and Stallone’s History. 2nd Alternate title: What A Tangled Web We Weave.

In Ryan Coogler‘s Creed (’15), you had Adonis Creed (Michael B, Jordan), son of the late Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), being trained for a big match by the aging Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), who, in his relative youth, fought and then befriended Apollo during the first three Rocky films (the ’76 original, Rocky II in ’79, Rocky III in ’82). But then in Rocky IV (’85), Apollo was pounded to death in a match with Russian superboxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), which led to a vengeance payback match between Drago and Balboa.

Now comes Creed II (MGM, 11.21), in which Adonis goes up against — who else? — Viktor Drago (Romanian actor Florian Monteanu), the son of his father’s killer.

Keep it personal, keep it familial, and always reference the early Rocky narratives and Stallone’s concurrent late ’70s and ’80s heyday. HE alternate plan: Keep the brand going but don’t reflexively make the narratives about personal revenge and payback. Because it feels overly schematic and mechanized when you do that. The world is a lot bigger and more fascinating than the one you dream of in your philosophies.
